Blackie, if you like a lot of versatile tie-out points, try this. Get some of those magnetic hooks used to hang things on metal walls, they only cost about 80 cents a piece on amazon. Get an equal number of stainless steel washers from the hardware store. See what I'm talking about? You can set up hooks for temporary tie-outs any place on your canvass you want, with the exception of the edge. Not exactly living history, but...

Years ago I read in an old book that square tarps were far superior in set up options (and weight of course) to rectangular tarps, like the oh so common 8x10' or 9x12' that flooded the marketplace. I switched to square and have never looked back. Living and hiking in snow country, I much prefer a true 9x9'.

THE best tarp video I've seen, and I've seen a few....I suspect the loop on the tarp is stronger than the usual grommets you see on all these "space age" tarps..THIS is the way to go if you have the right application, ie" carry increased weight and volume. Nice job, Blackie!

I get the traditional aspect of it, obviously essential for a re-enactor for a certain time period. I don't do any of that! For me it's too small although I'm shorter than you. Wind and weather find their way in on me. I use an Aquaquest 10x13 foot, weighs 2 pounds, has been bomber so far in all seasons, including snow and extreme wind, spring rain, and it has a lifetime guarantee. Great for many configurations with a ton of tie outs. With it and my friend's tarp we made a set up that covered both hammocks, room for our Helinox chairs, fully enclosed and had the Biolite wood stove cranked up inside. Right above freezing with rain and we stayed warm and dry. It would still be fun to have a canvas tarp made out of hemp, that's definitely a traditional material that maybe someday will see a big revival. Thanks for sharing! (edit) Bombproof has a nice website. Says that tarp weighs 6 pounds! Ouch! I'd have to leave my chair, some other gear and all my beer to carry that! LOL

A very interesting video, Blackie. Thanks. Unfortunately, I am rather large (6'2", 250#) and, at my age (80), I need more room, so I'll have to stick with my lightweight 10' X 10' tarps. Yeah, I said tarps. Taking a lesson from you (and, of course, Mors), I carry more than one to give me more room and versatility.

yeah that one set up i'd need a 10 x10 being 6'5"! i'm with you about being on the ground blackie over time that's become more of a pain especially around here for some reason the wild lawyer (AKA snake) population has exploded over the last 2 decades or so! mainly cotton mouths and a few copperheads but they found an eastern diamondback for the first time in over 15 years a couple back so who knows how many of those are around now! don't know if you'd be interested in it but about a month ago the nighthawk in light channel had video on do it yourself silicone treatment and a couple years back william collins did an oil cloth video!

Good video. In my own experience over 50= years of camping/backpacking an 8 x 8 foot tarp is just about the minimum you can get by with and have any degree of comfort, especially if the weather goes bad on you. I'm 6'4" and anything smaller tends to be a bit skimpy in a hard rain/wind weather. There was once a group trip I was on out in the Ventanna Wilderness when I lived out in California where a friend and I combined my 9x9 tarp tent with his 12x12 and a poncho to make what amounted to a truly commodious dome like shelter up on a bench above where most of the group camped that night in a meadow down the slope. The predicted showers turned into a rain of damn near biblical proportions and those camped down below got flooded out during the night. With some ditching courtesy of my partner we were high and dry with if memory serves 8 to 10 people who got flooded out in with us. The rain lasted well into the next day during our trip back out to the trailhead and nobody got back to the cars completely dry. One for the memory book...

Sounds like a great trip. At 6’4” what size tarp do you recommend?
@charlesroth986
@charlesroth986 2 жыл бұрын
@@jksurvivalbushcraft Minimum of 8x8 and larger is better if the weight isn't a problem - canvas gets really heavy fast and backpacking some variety of a nylon tarp is much lighter. All a matter of how much weight you are willing to carry. That night in California the tarps were coated nylon - the silicon impregnated stuff wasn't around back then....

Interesting video..! I will say that for anyone under 6 foot, an 8x8 tarp will do. For those of us over 6 foot the coverage and comfort of an 8x8 tarp goes down exponentially! The web site states that this tarp will generally average an extra 6 to 9 inches in size and weighs in at 6 pounds. At 5'10" it's easy to see how this tarp fits you. It would be interesting to see the actual measurements of your tarp! Thanks for the video...

The loops hanging off the sides look to give it about an extra five inches in every direction so it's probably closer to 8'10" if you consider the tie downs. Doesn't seem like much but having those hang off instead of being grommets cut through really adds something to the "stretch" factor.

Jay with OPSG, we make the tarps. It’s made of 10.10oz Army Tent Duck, boat shrunk and SUNFORGER TREATED. It’s mold, mildew and water resistant coating. Only thing better is wax treatment, which we offer. However, truth be told by the time this is worn out, you will probably be looking for an RV to replace it, not another tarp.
