When I was in the USMC infantry about 15 of us all took our poncho and built a Bedouin style shelter for all of us, mostly did it to make the Gunny mad and boy did it work! haha

In my possibles pouch, I always carried strips of velcro (both sides) and you can get them where it has a tape side for both sides. It comes in many forms and you don't have to carry an entire roll just cut some strips of both the rough and brushed sides, and then cut to what you need. It's light and has many uses. It will also help adhere things like netting to the outside for 'scitter and fly control. Easier than having to replace the tape or remove tape from gear. Easy to replace as needed. Also, if you know you are going to set up this type of shelter, there are all kinds of varieties of tarp clips that go from heavy duty to small that are good to have on hand. They are not very expensive and can also help hold on mosquito netting to the structure. They can also help add places for additional guylines where needed.

Instead of using a Trangia under the tarp, use Sterno. I’ve used Sterno for a long time for general purpose cooking with no problems. I like the poncho setup.

Great video Blackie and great information, Thank you! I only have one GI poncho, I'd like to get more to make a bigger shelter and have it where it has a floor and get some mosquito netting too. Too many bugs here too. 👍⛺

I got a' tip' for you to try that is helpful to me, and may be helpful to you. On ends of cords use 'heat shink tubing' (used on electric wires to waterproof) Not only is it used to keep strands together but also used as needle, I use different colors for different lines like zip ties, ridge lines, tie outs, and a lot more. Keep on making videos and I will keep watching. God bless, injoy and be save!

Blackie, I found the video showing how to turn medium Alice pack into assault pack. It’s Justin Somerset from 7 years ago. Still on KZbin. The mod option may only be available for the older green medium packs, as it seems, not all the medium packs have the stings and loops required. They’re located in bottom of compartment. Hope this is helpful for you or anyone else. Thanks

If its eazy to dig making a fox hole then putting up the poncho was by far the best. best equipment I ever used in the military was the Poncho and the poncho liner aka the woobie. I love my poncho liner so much i kept it when i got out. I just payed for it as if it were lost gear. I just found out they started putting zippers on the poncho liner. To turn it into a sleeping bag.

As far as I know only the Marines are doing the zipper. Army still in the dark ages or not wanting to fallow the Marines when they have something good.

I watch a few channels on KZbin about gear , and to tell you the truth I would rather be lost in the woods with you any day of the week than with one of these reviewers because you know how to make due with the minimal amount of equipment and rely on old-school methods , equipment & gear . I'm about to hit 59 years old this July and have never owned a tent that was new or a tent that was not military surplus until this year and it is a Litefighter 1 a really good tent that I saw on one of these fancy gear review channels , I , for most of my life have been using tarps , ponchos , woolbie's , wool blankets or whatever I could find lying around at surplus store's , the stuff that has that old surplus canvas & mold smell , we all know that smell ( that is the real smell of victory ) . The old stuff might be heavier , but it will last a lifetime if taken care of . I do however use the modern water filtration system's , because getting sick from bad water that you don't have the time to boil is not fun and can ruin your day , I wish that we all could afford the new fancy-schmancy lightweight gear they keep talking about , I know these channels are all about reviewing the newest items , but in reality who would go out and drop $ 700 on a backpack , or a $ 600 dollar one-man tent ? Camping is all about getting down and dirty at times . I have never seen these guy's ever get dirty , and bet most of them don't even poop in the woods . Speaking of pooping in the woods you should do a video on just that , a video about how to get rid of human waste without getting political , you know after dropping "The bomb". I don't want to rag on these channels , but I want to make a point about using what you have other than the super-duper lightweight or ultra-lightweight over-rated stuff that most of us will never see outside of a catalog . Camping and backpacking are just like being homeless but doing it for fun and on purpose . Right now we have been looking for another affordable woodland poncho so that my wife can have a second one for herself , I just picked up a real MARPAT zippered poncho liner ( woobie ) for her , I still use my normal one . Well , my rant is about over , keep the real-world videos coming , I enjoy these more than the expensive "gear reviews" 👍

One poncho is a hooch. Only used a two poncho shelter once in the Army. The rest of the time it would violate height restrictions (18-24 inches) and the grenade policy (3-5 meters between each person). I even used my large rucksack at the head and a tree sapling at the foot to suspend the poncho to make a hooch. But out camping, two ponchos is a nice shelter. Especially paired with some sort of bug protection like an A frame tent net (MSR Mesh House) or USMC IBNS (Improved BedNet System).

I remember doing this when I was in the Marines and you are right it does work and if you use both the liners and two large space blankets along with two large clear plastic tarps ( heavey duty plastic stop cloths they also give a new play on the super shelters for winter use.

they can i once pulled one of the hoods to the inside and put a large pot under it to collect rain water.. once the pot was full and all the canteens i pushed the hood out and use a stick to prop it up to stop rain from coming in

How would you go about keeping snakes from seeking shelter under the same tent that's occupied by me? That's really the only reason I don't like sleeping on the ground.

I've found that the best way to keep snakes out of your poncho shelter is to set it up inside a Motel 6...
@blackoracle69
@blackoracle69 2 жыл бұрын
sadly there is no 100% way to prevent it..usually in dry conditions i have not seen one come in camp they (wild snakes ) will usually give you a wide berth to avoid you ..but in heavy down pours i know of a big snake coming in to get out of the rain
