Well, some of spectators used to touch the cars during the race so many drivers said at the end of laps they found human fingers in car doors.

To make things even more dangerous- The Lancia team in particular reeeaaally risked it's drivers by putting the flimsy, thin, unprotected gas tanks underneath the drivers. Which was why it was so easy for a tree to immediately puncture it.

And thats why toivonen died. Fast as feck but dangerrous. He was ill on that stage and said these cars are too fast

To avoid cost some manufacturers produised only 100 road versions of the car. They would meet with the fia guy at 10am count the 100 car. Then they would say let's go for lunch to the fia guys and moved the 100 car in another parking.

I was lucky enough to be able to go and watch .these cars race . On a stage .. . The sound of those cares popping banging .echoed through the woods ling before the raging monster blasted past . . The pit crewsz often had to have .physc help .because theer would be body parts stuck tk the cars. Ears fingertips. Hair. Stuck in shut lines . I was not amongst those that was out on the course .I was young . But those cars.remain a vivid memory
