I'm a believer in this as well. After teaching for years 1 on 1 I have seen the level of engagement that students have when learning in a group. After using some of the mentioned tools, I could not go back to my old style of teaching 1 on 1 and without technology. It would be too painful!

Yes you can teach this way without computers. I have done it both ways. I would compare it to writing with a pencil or scratching notes into a rock with a stick...sure, it's possible, but the pencil is so much more effective that I would go with the pencil. You can see how powerful this technology is when you see the next week's lesson.

What were they doing with the skittles and the puzzle pieces? Putting one piece of the puzzle together and taking one skittle after each section?

If they got a 100% they would put a puzzle piece in then take a Skittle. I don't do this every lesson, I think you have to rotate your motivational strategies. This is one of the best I have seen because it gets them away from the piano for the right amount of time (if you use the 24 piece puzzle). Of course they don't know the pedagogical reasons for doing it, but they think it is a fun game:)
