He loved his fans and expressed his love through his music and involvement in charitable organizations. He gave his last performance on the early Dec. 1999 morning at CBS studios, New York. His job on earth was done. God called him home, he was gone in an instant. ( Grover, thank you for the joy you brought to me and your fans). RIP.

Just a great concert by one of the greatest. Amazing tone and control across all 3 horns. His soprano was giving him problems but you'd never know. 42:06-42:08 - he's about to throw it across the stage.

My girlfriend Lisa and I saw Grover 9 times in 5 years in San Francisco in the mid 70's. We were crazy about the guy. He performed at the Circle Star Theater in the Round with his regulars and 8 musicians from the San Francisco Symphony, 4 violins and 4 cellos. What a night! Those strings carried his melodies to greater heights that night. Stanley Turrentine and Freddie Hubbard were on the same ticket. Reply ·

I saw Grover do three sets a night at the Jazz showcase in Chicago (happy 90th birthday to Joe Segal) he was great!! would bring Tenor.Alto, Soprano and flute and play the hell out of each instrument. He was such a fiery soloist. I saw him at the Holiday Star in Merriville, Indiana, He got a standing ovation for each song he played! it was magical never saw that happen for an Artist. He was one of the greatest of my generation! (Phyllis Hyman was on the bill with him) He deserves more credit for being one of America's great jazz sax players. He pioneered what is known today as Smooth Jazz sound; being played by today's leading commercial jazz artist (you know them), but he played with more truth in his music; You felt Grover's soul in his music it was him, and not just the technical ability to run scales. We miss his genius and fire!

Even since I became a Jazz listener in the late 70's, Grover Washington Jr. has been one of my favorites performers. His music is unique.
@jaysee276 жыл бұрын
i don't think Grover was every fully appreciated for what he brought to the jazz genre during his time back in the 70s/80s when he came to prominence with Mr. Magic. Innovators rarely are fully understood and appreciated when they bring something entirely new. I can recall a lot of jazz musicians were scratching their heads and criticizing his style when he came out with his new melodic style of playing sax as opposed to what people were used to hearing in what people considered "real jazz", (Bird, Coltrane, Hawkins style, etc.). We look back now at Grover's contribution and how he pretty much created Smooth Jazz and wonder how some people missed his genius back then. We now have entire radio stations and concert events devoted purely to Smooth Jazz and, even if Grover's music is not played, you still can feel and hear his presence and influence at all of them. And if you can't tell, YES, I am a big fan.

+Megan ivey Hey Megan, not to rub it in, but you missed an icon. Saw him perform no less than 6 times -- each time a new experience. He was constantly evolving (like most of the greats); same thing with Miles -- you never saw the same show twice. Grover was the epitome of cool; always had Bill Jolly playing with him -- eventually becoming his Musical Director; Darryl Washington started playing with him post-Steve Gadd; Richard Lee started playing guitar post Eric Gale (when he passed away). His band is always tight. One of the fun things was, if you were fortunate enough, to be able to sit in during sound t check --- this was like a mini-concert. Grover passed in December of 1999 and the jazz world has never been the same. So many of today's "smooth jazz" sax players pattern themselves after Grover:Gerald Albright, Kenny G, Richard Elliott, David Sanborn, Everette Harp, Boney James, Walter Beasley, and the list goes on; fortunately for us, there's nothing like the original ..... Grover Washington, Jr. (often imitated, never duplicated)
