We use it a lot in India ❤️..in tea. Called as Ealaichi. Cardamom (/ˈkɑːrdəməm/), sometimes cardamon or cardamum, is a spice made from the seeds of several plants in the genera Elettaria and Amomum in the family Zingiberaceae. Both genera are native to the Indian subcontinent and Indonesia.

This is an amazing video. Thank you, but in the beginning you seem to say it’s not the same plant as the one with the pods, which is Elettaria cardamommum, known as green cardamom. If it’s not that, what plant is it? Another commenter says it’s not, and now I’m confused. I’d love to see an update, especially if it’s made with that clear, golden voice. I’ll be back. Thanks again.

Cardamom originally came from wild plants located in the Western Ghats in Southern India. The plants grew in such abundance in this region that this area became known as Cardamom Hills. We use it a lot in Indian tea and cooking.

Inspired by your recent line of videos, I fried up some flowering shoots or 'rabes' of sweet rocket, Hesperis matronalis, as beautiful cottage garden flower that grows like a weed here in Ireland. I read somewhere that they were edible. I didn't die, but I wasn't that impressed by the flavor, unfortunately. I was much more impressed with the taste of the stems of cardoon, a plant I've been growing as an ornamental for years. It tastes a bit like artichoke, to which it is closely related and bears a strong resemblance, but has a texture a lot like celery. Definitely a good spring crop that is perennial and very tolerant of drought.

What you're describing there is a cardamom ginger, AKA false cardamom & dwarf Cardamom. True cardamom, Elettaria cardamomum, should not have any fragrant to their leaves and are very tall plants, full grown size is 2 meters or more. False cardamom leaves are fragrant and can be used in tea/cooking but the fruits are nothing like the true cardamom, and therefore these two plants cannot be used interchangeably.

This is not true green cardamom, sorry to say. It’s Alpinia nutans, or cinnamon ginger. Real cardamom does not have aromatic leaves, and the growth habit is much taller. If you’re in the US looking for this plant, let me know! I have the real thing.
