A normal dark period (12hrs or 18-20 for autos) is all that's really needed, longer periods don't make for any noticeable difference. The plant takes the sugars down to the roots to feed microbes as exudates, or it will store starches in the leaves for a food source throughout the night while it cannot perform photosynthesis. Using up these sugars makes sense and I could see a benefit. Although I've always done this so I don't have a reference to bud that was harvested during daytime, so take my word with some salt. Research has shown that most plants completely use up these stores of sugars by dawn, so going for a longer night than normal should have no effect. Although if you cannot harvest right as the lights come on I would advise you to just leave the lights off till you're able to harvest later in the day. As for the plants producing extra trichomes or putting on more resin I would chalk that up to bro science without any mechanism to drive their hypothesis. Trichomes take weeks to ripen; resin is a defense mechanism for light, water, nutrient, and insect stresses.

Mr Cunuk has mentioned that he does this. I have done 48 darkness and seems to really work for me. Keep humidity low 35-40% and temp between 60-65F degrees. Stresses the plant out before chop causing the plant to produce more trichomes, Terpenes, Higher THC. As he said with DLI. Leaving the plants in light for longer than 12hrs in flower causes a light stress on the plant if running at high PPFD. To me I don’t want to risk burning.foxtails,more electricity more cooling.
@evzevz06
@evzevz06 10 ай бұрын
48 hours of light stresses the plant and doesn't put it in at state of limbo with no light energy. 48 hours is 4 days worth of 12/12 light energy given to the plant over a 2 day span, keeps it metabolising and all the energy to ripen, is that not a better use of the plants time than sitting in the dark and cold hoping rot doesn't set in, considering when you chop the plant doesn't just die its still basically alive and in darkness for the first few days

@odinx1856
@odinx1856 7 ай бұрын
You can see it on the plant when it has reached DLI. Given that conditions are right for the plant(distance to light source, temperature, humidity, airflow, watering and soil/rootsystem) you`ll see the leafs standing tall towards the light, and the short answer is that when the plant has reached enough light for a day it will not point the leafs towards the light source anymore, but let em drop down or even twist them another way, as avoiding the light. This can also be true if the plant is stressed with too much light, too hot/cold, too windy, humidity way off, so it might take some time dial it in.

Yes. I do 4 days of darkness. This does 2 things. 1 it does not take water those days so when you harvest less water weight, 2 after 24 hours of straight krebbs, the plant goes into a produce more resin state, so for 72 hours you allow it to do so. This increases flavanoids. I do it on my hydroponics table and people says things that If I repeat makes me sound conceded. It's great Lil end of grow cycle trick I learned in the 90s

Long time grower here. I've put plants in total darkness for the last 3-4 days many times. The plants basically just sleep that whole time. They don't drink much at all. You should be able to keep humidity below 55% before thinking of doing this also, as he mentions, because your humidity will go up, due to not having your lights on. I noticed a smaller electricity bill ;), but I dont think it helps the plant at all to keep them in darkness at the end. What I do think can rly help is lowering the temps(60-70F), as Alex mentioned. I too was amazed at the colors that came out, and the dense solid purple nugs. In nature the temps would get lower, so I think the plant does more to protect itself from that cold.

I’ve seen in an interview that, a plant starts to die without photosynthesis. If that’s the case the trichomes will actually start dying off as well. I can’t see a plant pushing out trichomes as a last ditch effort to protect itself, especially that trichomes are more for blocking the strong sun and protection from some insects.

Whenever I was looking online about the 24-hour 48 hours of darkness thing they did some studies on groups of 100 clones they had three separate groups. The 24 and 48 hours of darkness showed a higher percentage of the more complex terpenes that don't normally show up and evaporate at low temperature. Once it hits 36 hours of darkness it started to drop off on all the terpenes. So it's common for people to do 24- 48 hours of darkness only if you're trying to get some of those extremely volatile terpenes that evaporate off easily to stick around in your harvest. You're talking about quarter of a percent half a percent difference.

The length of the day is very different in the north or south than they are near the equator. During the summer the days are very long in the north or south, and very short in the winter. Around the equator they get 12 hours all year. So I don't understand how cannabis plants decide to flower when they live their whole lives with 12 hours. One thing that I will say about your counterpoint to the claim about total darkness for a few days being unintuitive is that the mere fact that it's unintuitive isn't an argument. Incredulity is not enough on its own because the natural world has no obligation to make sense to us. I'm reminded of the research that shows that a drought near harvest can increase cannabinoid content of the finished product. Stress has unexpected results on plants. When you consider the fact that things like cannabinoids, alkaloids, indoles, etc., are often, if not usually, a part of a plant, fungi, or animal's immune system or some kind of defense from something in its environment, it isn't really that unintuitive to think about how strategic stress can be useful for us since we have end goals that don't line up with biology. We all know and understand the link between mild stress and positive effects through understanding the link between dry back in the root zone and root development. I do think that you have a valid argument in saying that there is no empirical evidence and I agree with your characterization when you refer to it as "bro science" though. As for the thing about mold starting when you have the lights off, I think that a lot of pros will tell you that they elect to use a fungicide the day before or the day of harvest, maybe even after its hanging. There are many things you can use like this that are safe for late application and very effective. Two of my favorites are a broad spectrum fungicide called Zerotol and a bacteria called Streptomyces lydicus, both organic of course. Zerotol is glorified peroxide. It has paracetic acid in it though and that adds to its antimicrobial nature while also stabilizing the peroxide to extend its time of effect. When used in conjunction with RO just before harvest, it has exactly zero effect, measurable or not, on the end product because both RO and Zerotol evaporate without leaving a residue. Streptomyces lydicus is also really great because it's a bacteria that feeds on the mycelium and spores of parasitic fungi, such as borytris and powdery mildew. When it's on your plant it's basically pestilence for petty much all the fungi you hate. Both of these products can be applied up to the day of harvest. In fact there are a lot of places where people will spray salad at restaurants with Zerotol before eating it because some countries don't have very good controls on food handling and ecoli outbreaks are common. There are so many gentle options these days that mold should never be a deciding factor in something like this. I really don't care how high the the disease pressure is or what vectors I have (outside of my nursery) because my IPM will address any and all contaminants that will come my way, be it mold, bacteria, or insects, and I'll do that without hurting myself, the bees, animals, etc. I've only recently found this channel but I would really love to see somebody really do a deep dive on bio pesticides like entomopathogenic fungi and insecticidal bacteria, all natural systemic deterrents like rosemary oil/sns 209, and bio controls such as chitin in the root zone. The ag industry has done the work for us, we just have to seize the data. This is the way the whole world is moving right now. Bacteria, fungi, and bio controls are safer in every way and also tend to be more effective as well. It's a revolution that is going to improve human health across the globe and growers, big and small, should be taking advantage of this

I do 24 hours of clone and veg till they’re about 12” tall then switch it to 18 hours for budding. I use Deep Water Culture (DWC) and I have a 250w hps light for the whole process. They do tend to get a little too tall; but for a small home grow of 4-6 plants I get enough to regrow them from clones or off the original stem….for myself. I find that they can get quite stressed out but they can grow back after you chop off most of the plant. Plus since they are growing in DWC they already have a huge root system. Mine net together with themselves. It’s really cool. Truffle Cake!!🎉🎉🎉

One guy at a grow shop once told me about ( I never tried it ) doing 8 on 8 off 8 on 8 off continually during flower because the plant only needs 8 hrs to do what it has to . And you gain a extra cycle in a 24 hr period which ups to around 50 odd extra cycles in a week thus shortening grows by a several weeks every crop . Anyone herd this ?

as for ripening... when you buy bananas from grocery, I hope you buy properly. Meaning green bananas. not yellow/ripe. keep them in a dark cool place. they'll ripen up as you need them. Nothing worse than buying a batch of yellow bananas and theyre garbage in two days. Not to mention the aphids/fruit flies/gnats youre bringing in to your household jeopardizing your crop. My wife does the same with hot chile peppers. any green peppers are kept in a dark place. They ripen up quick turning yellow and red. So that principle could be applied to your mother plants. Test it. Increase the night period. try 8 on 16 off. What people forget is the night time, is the healing time. Keeping a plant in 24 hour light is no different than weightlifting 24 hours and day and then wondering why your muscles are shrinking rather than growing. bodybuilding is creating little micro tears in the muscle groups. They need food and rest to heal at their new size. So why is it hard to understand that plants share the same principle? Every morning I measure my plant and notice the biggest growth happens overnight.

Never tried the dark period before harvest...But someone I know that subscribes to that ideology said that it was because they were growing a variety that is known for being the color purple (gdp or something similar) and putting it in a COOL dark place causes the plant to turn more purple. No idea what other effects result as a side effect, or what happens if you do it to a plant that is typically all green, but that is what he said.

There is a daylight chart online. You can check the emerald triangle, The Caribbean, and all around the equator. However to skip to the point. I’ve noticed that most areas do start flowering right around 13.5 hours of darkness. I personally have been running around 13hours and 15 minutes of light and 10 hours and 45 minutes of dark once in flower. However it is most likely beneficial to also consider where in the earth your particular variety (or it’s parents genetics) came from. Because the beach of a island on the equator gets different amounts of light when compared to some varieties that grow on the side of some mountain ranges.

(Booth rooms turn off lights at the same time, it probably doesn’t matter at all but I’ll mention it) Can I say it’s 100% right for you? I can’t say that with certainty. However I can and do suspect that 13hrs will work just fine. However it is possible that 13:15 could work for you. if you are willing to experiment, I would recommend starting when you flip your plants to flower since we are taking about approaching the limits. And I wouldn’t want someone accidentally re-vegging. If you don’t see stretching After 10 days, than they most likely did not flip to flowering. And will have to lower the amount of time. @@MikeParentLeap Apparently Mark, from Perfect Gardens (and Drops of balance) has apparently already covered the topic pretty well in a video called “how sensitive are cannabis plants to light actually” And he states that they start flipping into to flower when they drop right below 15 hours and 30 minutes of daylight. And be completely honest it sounds pretty accurate. apparently the goal here is to keep it anywhere under 15-1/2 hours of light. So that does leave us some headroom, As long as we keep the light intensity in check for the top colas. Because they are going to be getting a much much higher D.L.I. With the higher P.P.F.D. However with that, it should definitely produce more trichrome production... as long as you don’t fry them.

The idea behind the 24 to 48 hours of darkness before harvest, as I was taught what's to accomplish two things, one -it helps to plant bulk up a little bit as well as get deeper colors. It said to kick out a little more resin or help the resin mature but mainly, w-when the plant gets light hitting it it starts pulling up water when the lights are off it's not pulling up water as soon as the light hits the leaf it starts almost a pump inside of it pulling up water. So 24 to 48 hours darkness helps you get a little jump on drying it cuts a little time off of it but it doesn't make them dry any faster it's still a slow dry like normal but you're not going to day or so off

Can a light cause a circuit to trip & shut off an appliance? Just got an Evo 6, & i feel it's causing the fridge to poop. Granted yes, I'm also running a space heater as well. I don't like the idea, but I'm going to run the room without the heater to see if it's the cause. The Evo hasn't been higher than 3 on the dial as well. I may switch back to the old (lower wattage) light to see if there's any difference on the power system. As i didn't have this issue, while running the light & heater simultaneously. Now that i think of it, the dry tent had a de-hu & fan running with all these. Possibly needing a rewire of the home? Or even a new circuit breaker install? Thanks for any help/input.

Be careful you don't want to burn the house down. A 15 amp breaker/line is only rated for (120*15=1800) 1800 watts. Add everything on that circuit and make sure not to exceed 80% (1800*80%=1440) continuous draw, that will give you room for the surge when stuff turns on. A meter called "Kill-a-Watt" is nice to help find the draw from items

Stress causes terpene production.When insects and weather attack plants create terms to help defend off bugs and diseases.A vigorous plant will produce terpenes when going through a stressful situation.I run a kitchen knife through the bottom of the stalk by the medium then I place. Paint stirrers to make a gaping hole.I get double terpene production.Lst and extreme weather increases as well the darkness just slows chlorophyll production which can lead to a hay smell.Thats what I do Scott try it you will be amazed and always put holes in your stalk after you see the results.

I was taught:The cannabis plant being “an annual” in an outdoor environment gets its cues from natures clock and the rising and setting of the sun as well temp. At the end of the season the plant to protect itself produces trichomes as a shield to extend its life (and likely produce seeds from the shock of the impending cold weather to allow reproduction; a dead flower produces nothing) and this happens with shorter days and lower temps (fall). This trigger color/fade etc. I won’t debate if more trichome production occurs in the days/night. But the natural progression say the fullest a flower will be is just before it starts to die. It’s awful hard to go against nature, and not make mistakes.

I feel that 24 hours darkness. May preserve some of the more volatile esters that normally are lost during lights on. I think more light wouldn't work for certain cultivars, and I believe genetics plays the biggest role in all of that. It just seems like the light would be essentially cooking off terps. While darkness would be causing stress as well, but while being less degrading to the actual cannabinoids in the trichomes. I'm just gonna try multiple different methods and see what I like best. That's probably what we all should do.

The actual theory is "a plant produces trichomes at night when it's dark and cool as a sunscreen to protect in the day when the sun is out and its warm wich causes trichomes to deteriorate" if you've ever grown outside you know those cool longer nights give you a huge increase in trichome productivity.... if it's warm at night and hot during the day you will see less production of trichomes..... thats the theory as I've been told and read, no I've never tried it but people swear if you can have 30% humidity at 68 degrees for 48 hours dark you will see a color and trichome increase 🤷‍♂️ more light will give the plant less time to produce trichomes and more time to deteriorate trichomes I guess
