I agree with you totally. I think protective styles with extensions are a scam. Firstly, genetics is an important factor for fast growing hair, getting healthy with minimal effort. Quick story: when I was college, I knew a girl who never wore weaves or wigs or extensions, everyone commented on how she was maltreating her hair. I wondered if her hair would ever retain length. Surprise, surprise it did. Here’s what she did: pineapple updos and buns. She combed with a wide tooth comb anyways, everyday before classes. We, her friends, with our weaves and all the stress, we had less length. My point: sure, hair grows with protective styling, but once you take it off, and it comes in contact with “the elements”, there is still going to be breakage. Hair breakage is a symptom, it’s better to find the cause and treat it. Scientifically, you are supposed to loose 50 to a 100 hairs per day. People see a few strands after coming and go crazy. Though, there is a big difference between breakage and excessive hair shedding. If hair is not allowed to acclimate, how will it endure when it is out of protective styling? I understand changing hairstyles to get a new look. Due to the richness of our hair heritage and history, we are blessed with the option of changing hairstyles. Being with a just one hairstyle gets boring anyways. However, I’m getting fed up with natural-hair-journey KZbinrs telling black women to hide their hair with bone straight extensions and whatnot. I understand adding Afro extensions to your hair, extensions with the same texture as your hair. I don’t understand covering up your hair with wigs and calling it protective styling. Black hair can grow without extensions. Let’s call a spade a spade. I have seen some African-American celebrities in Hollywood with long bra-length and waist-length hair, they would never let out. I’m not going to say I don’t understand the pressure. As a black woman, I do. Your hair is short to let out, big deal! Miss Universe 2020 had a tapered cut, and she won. For 4 months now, I haven’t done any protective styling on my awkward length hair (which is just short, not awkward), it’s still growing. (I tell the difference by making a single twist-out and comparing the length to what it was the previous month. I just spray my hair with water, add a DIY leave in conditioner and a little gel for hold (for when the hair is straightened), make 3 cornrow or Bantu knots and go to bed. The next day, I just do an updo with a band and a scarf and go to work. It may seem stressful, but it’s worth it. Wearing my crown as is. I get shrinkage too, I solve that by using coconut serum and aloe Vera gel, blowing it out, especially when I’m too tired to make bedtime cornrows. It was very difficult for me to leave my hair out before, I was always self conscious. Lastly, If you can make a bun, an updo, twist-outs with you hair, it’s already a protective style, without depriving your hair of care. All these styles help you avoid over-manipulation. We keep bending towards Caucasian hair beauty standards, forcing our hair to be straight so we can have flowy hair. Black hair or African hair is what it is. It has its own standard and I dare to say, science. We have to accept that.

I love your video. I'm done with these so-called protective styles! It's time-consuming and money-wasting. Afro hair is easy to look after, and I've learnt that now. Our hair loves moisture which consists of spritzing with water every day, leave-in conditioner and every two to three days oil the scalp and hair. Pre-poo with good oils for an hour and wash it out. Style: High puff, and you're good to go, ladies ❤❤❤ I know it takes time for many women to get to this level but trust me, we have to accept our hair for what it is and love and embrace our texture. Once we do this, our hair will definitely grow. All of you are beautiful and wonderful in every single way ❤️❤️❤️

I too can't wear 'protective' styles. Don't get me wrong I have in the past and that's only because I couldn't be bothered to spend the time and my hair wasn't playing ball! I have never worn a protective style to grow or protect it. I also deep condition on a weekly basis. I never used to but one day I thought I'd see if it made any difference and when I saw it did, that was the start of it for me. I don't go a week without doing it now and my hair appreciates it! I moisturise then do 4-5 braids on each side. Always sleep with a satin bonnet. I've noticed just by braiding my hair every night has grown my hair. My mum used to apply olive oil and then braid it and this allowed my hair to grow really long. By the age of 10, my hair was down to just above my bottom! So that's the reason I now braid it every night and I'm seeing the difference its having. I think if you look after it and give it what it needs then it will thank you 😊. You've given so many good tips here! Thanks for sharing 😘. Sending you hugs and kisses from London UK 🇬🇧😘

I have something against protective style. It’s not for me I always get breakage. It’s tight and itchy. Girl I really don’t want it on my hair. I’m paying money for hairstylists to do my hair and feel bad afterwards. Something that bothers me so much is when they braid my hair and a strand of my hair gets in the braid and sometimes they pull it out and it breaks or leave it then that strand that cut in the braids breaks. No I have that strand of hair sticking and it doesn’t blend when you do a slick ponytail.

I agree that protective styles arent for everybody, I have been looking for a video for motivation to leave my hair out because I don't think protective styles are for me ... I normally do braids and leave it in for a period of 2 months and whether I try to moisturise my hair in the braids or not I lose alot of hair... my ends thin out ... my hair volume is alot less.. because of the thinning ends I normally have to cut it off hence losing alot of length .... I realise that when I did my big chop and my hair was to short to take protective styles with extensions, it grew better ... so I am going on a 6 month journey to test that theory ... wish me luck guys ... Ik nobody may not read this but just in case someone does ill make an update in October ... 😊😊

That’s very possible. That’s how I use to do mine, before I started learning different hairstyles. That’s how a lot of natural girls do. (Sometimes I blow dry, use a hooded dryer, or sitting by a basic fan helps in hot weather.) I only finger detangle...no comb no brush for almost 3 years now already (maybe 1 time for my hopefully last, flat iron years ago)...and no I don't have, nor do I want, locs...I oil and I massage my scalp daily, and deep condition with low heat monthly. I am tired of my hair being the same length SO THEREFORE, I WILL TRY TIL' I DIE for my chance to have fairytale mythical hair! Im daily washing til healthy and long, after that I'll move it back to every 3-7 days if anyone cares lmao. I DO!!!

Sometimes i skip a wash day cause daily is very new to me, but I HAVE SEEN POSITIVE RESULTS FROM THE DAILY WASH (week 3). I have fine hair, practically invisible...very coily and easily damaged, I say 4b-c texture wise, but so soft it melts into submission when wet!

Help! You are like the only person that went this route. Thats me i cant be doing braids for all the same reasons. When you say wash and go style for 4 days...do you mean you wet your hair every day to keep that style alive? Can you do a video on your "protective" routine for us to see what you mean. Also the puff you wore did you literally leave it in overnight? Or take down at night and redo same style next day? Thanks and subbed!

Your hair is beautiful, babe and so are you ! Point. But the fact that you don't touch your hair too much and usewash and go's is proof that you are doing a form of protective styling. Not touching the hair too much is key.

After I got saved and started getting a stronger relationship with God. Everything got and is getting better, my attitude, my relationships with people and my life. So here: Romans 10:9-11 (KJV) That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

Thank you so much for the tips! I wrote them all down. However, I have a question. So my hair is currently in transitioning stage, The roots are so thick but my ends are really falling out. I did the porosity test and found out I have low porosity hair type and my hair also stays so dry. When I was watching your video about the Deep Conditioning types I wrote down "Hydrating conditioner and protein deep conditioner" I think I need to use both? because its falling out every time I brush. Also, I don't know much about hair and I don't really know how to style so I will use your method. Thanks for giving me hope sis! I can tell by my roots I got some good ol' 4C growing from my roots. What should I do about deep conditioning? Btw, also thanks for telling me about the Cream of Nature Shampoo i'm going to pick a few things up ASAP. One more question though.. Sorry! I'm just so excited to start my own hair journey and to also love my hair as it is. My next question is, you said about detangling? How often do you detangle? and which tools do you use? I have a "denden" brush lol but every time I run it through the hair.. so much breaks off. Thank you! Stay blessed.

My problem is mine gets tangled or flat when I lean on things or sleep so I have to comb it and it rips it out sadly. I'm trying to learn to take care of it because I don't have anyone else to do it and I'm 17. I don't know how to braid and my hair is short already, I don't know what to do with it

A girl in Target complimented my hair and asked me how I grew it so long and what she should do. She had colored braids. I told her she had to stop doing things to her hair. Just leave it alone. 🤷♀️
