I’m sure a wholesale grower doesn’t want to hear this. But I have been growing dragon wings for at least 5 years all from cuttings from 3 original hanging baskets purchased 5 years ago. I prune heavily just before the first frost and all the pruned stems get propagated. I winter over plants in baskets in my basement under fluorescent light and put them out again in the spring. I have over 30 plants now all going strong, and a few nursery trays full of newly propagated babies. When I prune in the summer, the pruned tip always goes back in the same pot to propagate which helps make the overall plant much fuller and bushy.

How do you care for your propagated plants over the winter? How much water? Do they need grow lights or flourescent lights? Thanks!

Same! Bought a small one for $2 about 4 or 5 yrs ago. In zone 8b. Have 3 huge hanging baskets, biggest I could find and a big container full that,sits on deck as well. Had some breakage bringing them in. Potted those up. Love to have something pretty to give to others in the spring. Will do a big cut back on these and coleus I saved. Should have a garage brimming with nice sized babies in spring!

This was really helpful. I inherited a dragon wing that came from cutting after cutting on the original which belonged to my great-great-grandmother. No pressure. My questions are 1) how do I get mine to flower? I haven't ever fertilized it, nor have I put it outside, and it has never bloomed. Would either/both/neither help? And 2) my mom's has a couple of dead canes I would like to extricate without hurting the plant. She passed a year ago, so I want to be very careful with hers. Help?
@plantvibrations2 жыл бұрын
Definitely placing it outside will help with flowering! And for salvaging the stems, treat them like I showed for the propagation and each stem can turn into a plant of its own!
@annaturzyniecka38345 ай бұрын
Very helpful, thank you! I wonder if it would be possible to propagate one of these beauties from a leaf, instead of using a full cutting? Obviously it would take longer even if it was possible, but should I even bother to try?

I appreciated the video and the enthusiasm. We have been planting them for years. I do think that you might just have a preference that is missing the plot. The plants are supposed to be top heavy. That is the way they have been hybridized to clump. I think you've lost the whole charm of the plant by forcing it to be something it's not. That said. Everybody likes what they like.
@plantvibrations2 жыл бұрын
They’re certainly bred to be vigorous but in my experience without pinching them the top heaviness can lead to broken stems. Thanks for sharing your experiences!
