Long time vegan here. I have to say, it is becoming increasingly difficult for me to feel connected to the people around me. I am not the militant vegan type. I am not angry or aggressive or anything like that- I've opted to "lead by example," so to speak. I very, very rarely talk about my very strong feelings towards eating meat/consuming dairy, etc. But sometimes it's too much to keep in, and I sent some of the dairy farm footage to some friends. These are people who I know love animals very much, and who would never willingly hurt an animal. The ones who bothered to respond at all said that it was horrible, but that most dairy farms aren't like that. The apathy I'm surrounded with is getting to me, and I'm having a hard time not withdrawing from people whose company I previously really enjoyed. I spend a lot more time by myself, and I honestly don't know how you do what you do. You give a calm, logical, rational argument why eating animals is just not necessary, and you're met with derision and ridiculous excuses. I am so profoundly disappointed by people and their selfishness, and I hope to learn how to do a better job dealing with the sadness I feel. It's really getting to me.

I am in the same situation as you are. It's difficult and lonely to be surrounded by family and friends who do not care about animals or planet. I find solace online, speaking to like minded people helps a lot. When I feel overwhelmed by all the negative thoughts exercise also helps a lot. I drifted away from all of my friends after becoming vegan and that's ok. I was disappointed at first that people around me are so apathetic, but with time I realized that I had evolved and they are not. It's ok to leave behind people who do not share your values. Stay strong, animals need every one of us vegans, we are the only hope they have.

I drive by dairy farms on the way to work every day. I live in central California. They are definitely not "tourist destinations." Just hundreds of cows crammed into small corrals, standing in the mud. They are definitely not eating green grass. They have to stick their heads through a fence that locks their head in place while they are eating. I see them struggling to get their heads out and it's really sad. They huddle together when it's cold and rainy. I also drive by almond orchards and other orchards. They make a much better "tourist destination." Every spring people come to see the beautiful Blossom Trail and buy the delicious fruit.

If we only grew crops for human consumption, we could meet global demand using 30% of the land. So all the habitats being destroyed, and the animals being killed in harvest, that’s primarily caused by meat-eaters like yourself. Veganism is clearly the ethical choice which causes the least suffering in that regard. It takes 16kg of plants to raise 1kg of beef, it’s incredibly inefficient. It takes as much water as taking a shower every day for six months to produce 0.45kg of beef. Vegan agriculture uses less water, less land, and generates less co2. Which means you’d prove yourself wrong after a 5 minute google. This makes it hard to believe you were ever a vegan. I remember the outrage in 2010 over the Conklin Dairy Farm video revealing horrific abuse of cows. But the majority of the response back then was more of a welfarist attitude, continuing to support other dairy farms while calling for more "humane" treatment. Now that the same atrocities are still happening 9 years later, the reaction this time is much more enlightened -- of people calling for the complete boycott of ALL dairy products. John Benson he’s saying animals should have rights. You’re saying they shouldn’t. Neither of you have evidence to support what you’re saying. Since “rights” are an abstract concept you can’t have any evidence, only put forward a rational argument. I haven’t heard a cogent rational argument for why sentient living beings with the capacity to think feel and suffer shouldn’t have rights. But if you’ve got one, go for it. But just saying “non-human animals don’t have rights” isn’t true. Not globally, not culturally, there are many examples of animals having enshrined rights.

here's how you deal with it, you thank them for their time and then you move on. there is a technique called "gray rock" used in dealing with cluster b personality disorders, you realize these people are coming to the table triggered and needing validation and will fight for it, don't feed their need to take everyone else down so they they can play king on a stack of people they abused to get there. Crazy trumps reality in their sick heads, but its not your job to deal with it, unless you are a therapist and they are paying you by the session. the worst thing you can do with a hostile person is try to retaliate, just use closure politely and don't let them mess with you.

But it was so worth it to know I'm not lying to myself or conflicting with my own morals anymore. No matter what simon, just know that we are all here for you and we've all been in your shoes. I remember debating about going vegan while roasting a whole chicken not thinking anything of it. You just dont realize it until you get to the other side all of your hypocrisy. if you ever want to find out the truth or are ready to "take the red pill" as I call it, watch earthlings and what the health. I still remember as a child, visiting my relative's dairy farm...which was the old fashioned way of gaining milk from the cows....they milked by hand and I remember trying with no success. I loved those cows. They ate in the fields. I remember the ice cream parties. Little did I know at the time that I was lactose intolerant. Nobody looked for those things back then. I had horrible acne as a teenager. When I gave up dairy, the acne disappeared. Amazing! Hmm. Oh well...it is all an education that we all experience in many different ways. We didn't have the Internet back then....we were slaves to newspapers, magazines and television news.
