Ever see the live-action He-Man film? There's a scene where the heroes have come to *our* world and they snag some fast food. That seems inherently in conflict; expecting us to set ourselves apart from the animal kingdom in our morals, but still reacting with confusion when we consider ourselves different to animals. It makes sense to me that they'd be shocked humans still eat meat, despite having the technology and scale of production to not need to. And it makes sense they'd be upset over the cruelty in that process. It doesn't make sense to me that they'd question why we don't eat each other, given that we too are mere animals. I suppose if they view 'species advancement' as wholly binary and, upon learning that we eat meat, they might conclude we are NOT highly evolved and might as well be cannibals. But to me that doesn't fit their behavior in the rest of the film. Obviously this is a comedy sketch, but I think it's a clever enough film to be worth talking about it like it's valid sci-fi. Yes, people do question when science fiction stories have potential contradictions, or confusing metaphors. Even star trek. Especially star trek. I liked this film enough that I want to engage with it intellectually. The thesis rides on whether or not humans should hold ourselves to higher standards than animals do. I think we should, but that's undercut when the film says we're apes.
@WilyFilms7 ай бұрын
I'm sorry but it becomes tiresome having to repeat myself (especially when I'd answered this in the previous response). As you're aware, I could just delete comments and not engage. Perhaps the problem is it never occurred to me that people used our being animals (taxonomically speaking) as an excuse to do what other animals do (for the reasons listed in the description). Maybe I should have done more research on how people justify their support of animal agriculture. The great ape reference was there to shut down the "God gave us the animals to do with as we please" argument (an argument of which I was aware). But now the Godly just claim we're not related to great apes. I guess I should've seen that one coming too. I've been aware I'm an animal since I was a child. I've been aware other animals eat animals since I was a child. I've also not wanted to eat animals since a child. This never seemed in the least contradictory to me.
