My mom used to braid my hair super tight when I was younger and my hair fell out completely a few times. I’ve been a year and a half natural and my edges are kind of full because I massage, oil it and avoid tight styles. They really help but I can still see my history of damage because it’s thin, fragile and my scalp can be seen easily

Pandora Plunkett I know this is an old post but I wanted to still respond. I think she said that at the advanced stage you would do the same thing as in the mid stage, figuring out the cause, eliminating the damaging practice, cleansing gently, moisturizing and sealing. But she also mentioned that you would most likely need to seek medical attention at that point probably from a trichologist. It seems that you’d need to do the things in the first two steps of course but once it’s at that balding stage further professional help is what’s going to be needed. There’s only so much one can do at that point.

Thank you for this video, your videos are always so informative. My sister and I used to go to the same hair stylist, who braided our hair too tight and always picked up the edges, or left the relaxer in our hair too long....long story short, all our edges fell out and the area feels bald smooth. We stopped relaxing, braiding and transitioned to natural in 2012, and bc-ed September 2013. My sister never listens tho and still braids her hair, although not too tightly, but still shouldn't be done. I stopped because I don't want a receding and "new-but-further-back" hairline, so we're religious massaging the damaged area with JBCO for over a year now, but the edges are coming back very very very slowly and very fine. I even went as far to take biotin, but got impatient and stopped, I do watch what I put in my body and exercise 4-5times a week (love being active). I also noticed that the area of missing hair is itchy, and I've been told it means the hair is growing(?) I don't know but I'm hopeful, and I chastise myself every day because up until about 5 years ago, there wasn't a demarcation between my eye brows and hairline, and we have mad thick coarse full hair in my family. But lesson learned way too late, I just hope and pray it all comes back. I've already shared your channel with so many of my natural sistas and transitioning sistas out there. thank you for making explaining the science, we'll keep watching you, thanks again xoxo

Girl. My mum has been ripping my edges out for over a decade. Lol I even remember at school ages ago, one of my friends was like I love your braids but they look too tight to me. Wish I listened to her. Well, later that coupled with poor care after relaxing then being natural then relaxing now natural again lol and scalp issues. Now, even though I'm natural my hair is really full but there's a permanent dime sized empty / see through/thin hair spot right next to my middle part. It's been bugging me forever, however the rest of my edges have truly flourished thnx for individually twisting them apart from the rest of my hair, moisturising and some castor oil

It may also be beneficial for some people to try: onion seed oil, garlic seed oil and cayenne to stimulate scalp along with these methods. Also, there are essential oils that does help the scalp and blood flow to the scalp which may "reverse" some damage.

I have a question. I don't necessarily have thinning edges but since going natural I've incorporated castor oil into my regimen. I apply a few drops to my finger tips and massage it into my hair and scalp focusing on my nape and edges. Should I switch to a lighter oil for those areas? The only reason I even apply the castor oil to those areas was to encourage thicker, stronger and more resilient hair. And also to pre-emptively combat thinning. I have combination 3d/3c/4a hair.

LOOK, I was tired of buying products.Tired of trying to figure it out.Tired of trying to learn the science of it.Tired of the 4a,b,c l,g,b,t,q hair textures and nonsense and the division it has caused between people. 2 months ago I shaved this crap clean off my head. Not for any growth results or any other false hope. I was just sick and tired. And my head the size of 1& 1/2 adult bowling balls combined with what resembles a 4 pack of hotdogs toward the nape of my neck but, DANG IT! IM FREE!! IM just happy to look back at these videos. That's what I had to do because my edges been gone for years due to HAIR ROLLERS when I was a little girl. Now I'm in my 50's I have been trying for years to help my edges. Just last year I cut my hair and got away from the chemicals. The before you know it the middle of my hair went.....girl if you knew what was going on with me in my mind. Well, I started quickly working on it (MY BOLD SPOT). I did not go to a doctor it was common since and prayers , oils. and most of all my HANDS. OH..keeping it clean and condition, moisture is a key point as well. You have to find what is good for your hair. Every THING on KZbin about hair may not be good for that person. Find what helps you and pray for your hair it's LIVING to ask God for help. Most of all ladies we have to remove the BS out of our lives. ...if you know what I mean...ok. 🌟🛐🌟💟 I wish you all much love peace and happiness in growing your hair.

I am very grateful for this video. I think my issues are combo of previous poor hair care regimen, genetics and TMJ, which causes me to clench my jaw (that's about 60 lbs too), cutting of oxygen and blood supply to areas of my face that are along my hair line. So much healthier hair care regimen and products (mostly homemade) and a mouth guard for the TMJ. I can't change my genetics but I can at least give them a good fight. I am mid stage and this info was so helpful. I was doing so many things wrong and wondered why I was not seeing good progress. Butters on the hair line, tight scarf....ugh! But I am on it now! Peace and Blessings!

Great video! Very informative. So it seems (to me) once you have damaged edges, your faced with a choice.......you can do what will Heal your edges or you can do what will Style your edges..........but not necessarily both. Why do I have a sad feeling some Will not give up slicking their edges Even if it means in say 4 years they won't have any???. .....................................................(sigh) I don't get it! What is the THING about slick edges??? I can see if your relaxed and you want to slick down the new growth (no I still don't get it, but at least it matches. Straight hair, straight edges)....but on natural hair.......I mean the rest of your hair is natural but, But STILL Some Have those Slick Edges!! And then once their thin they feel the style doesn't look neat (and it doesn't seem to matter What the style is from twists to an afro) if they don't slick'em down which as the video pointed out-Product Buildup. So they Never have a chance to get Better they just get Thinner and it's just this HORRIBLE Vicious cycle that All starts with us styling our hair in a way that Screams to the Whole World: "The REST of My Hair can be Natural, BUT!! Not My EDGES!!!!"

Kerith I too suffered from this condition all over my scalp and hairline until I started using “Virgin Hair Fertilizer”. The product package is orange and white and it is made by Virgin Beauty Products. I buy it from the beauty supply or on Amazon. Since using this product, I no longer have oversized flakes, itching or dry scalp, and inflammation. I am also able to style my hair and not worry about what my scalp looks like in the areas where I part the style. This product has been a scalp and style saver. My natural hair is able to grow because I no longer have the excessive buildup. I can wear a protective style for at least a month (or longer), without my scalp becoming inflamed. I also use this product on my daughters and we all have a healthier scalp as a result. I am not a professional of hair care, I am just sharing my story. I hope this helps you or the person that may read this post.

I recently started wearing a wig grip because in addition to holding wig secure (wearing because of thin top and edges) it is supposed to save your edges. Well after wearing for several weeks, I've noticed increased thinning in those areas. Am I doing something wrong? Too tight or maybe my scalp doesn't like material. Just found your channel. Hello I enjoy your videos very informative. I have noticed when you wrap your hair, you use a scarf that looks about 2 inches thick on your edges. What type of material is this scarf? My edges are thining I think I am in phase 2, I believe it has to do woth my edges getting exposed in the middle of the night when my scarf starts to slide back. Please share the material and your actual method of protecting you edges at bed time.

Im in the advanced stage. There's no hope for my edges. Ten years of wearing braids and not properly caring for them. Oh well. Lesson learned. Now I must suffer.

How about PRP Therapy?

Juana de Arco My dermatologist suggested PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Therapy where they take some of your blood and spin it down and use the platelets to inject into the scalp, with promising results but it costs around $1200.

Juana de Arco have you tried the PRP Therapy? I'm not certain if I have thinning edges maybe because by comparison the missing hair on my crown is more noticeable. that will be a last resort for me because I don't think I'd ever consider transplantation, however, I do feel as though I am beginning to see results with Jamaican black castor oil and I have stopped for a little while to try a hair growth oil mixed with ayurvedic herbs. not too long into this yet but my problem was consistency with anything. we'll see what happens but I I am starting to see growth in an area I've had since the age of 16 from an actual burn in chemistry class and something's happening although I was told that would never grow back.

How much tension is too tight for things like headscarves? I see people using stockings to seemingly bind back their hair for updos and I use satin scarves for this myself. Is facelift tight too tight?

Is it damaging or protective to braid in synthetic hair to your own corn rolled hair while preparing for a crochet braid?

Adding synthetic hair to a corn roll can make the corn roll to tight. So, other then that its not damaging.
