Hey Travis, this is David Riviere from Pine Mountain Georgia. I struck out several times trying to do seedless watermelons and you helped me immensely get over the hump 15:46 with your videos. Thanks. I had a 93% germination rate this year for the first time. I watch yours and your dad‘s videos a lot since I retired. Very helpful thanks again.

I started sangria watermelons last weekend. 100 percent germination. Tomorrow I’m gonna start some seedless watermelons. Last time I tried I think I had 10 percent germination. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks for the outstanding info on seedless melon germination. Will you make another video showing how you handle your seedlings once they begin to pop? Thanks again as your videos are so relevant and instructional.

Looking forward to starting watermelon seeds. Not going to do seedless this year, perhaps next year. Giant ones will be part on the mix however. Thanks again for all of your tips and keep them coming.

Some pros keep the seed tray wrapped in cellophane AND kept in darkness til they start to pop up.

How big should watermelon plant be to know when it’s ready to transplant? Do seedling need constant light to avoid stemming out too long and being brittle up transplanting?

Travis, rumor has it the ducks had to move their surveillance platform from the pine thicket to another location this year. Reports of "chatter" indicate they are aware of the watermelon seed starting.
@LazyDogFarm

No more "ducks." Just "duck." All but one eventually got hit by cars while crossing the road. Haven't seen the one duck in a long time. I'm guessing he stays at his home pond mostly now.

Going to try growing Cracker Jack up here in CT based on your recommendation. Hope they're good! Question: do you bother thinning the plants at all under the theory that the remaining fruits will be sweeter/more concentrated in flavor? I see that recommended sometimes.
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm 2 ай бұрын
I always plant my watermelon plants 2' apart along the row, with rows about 4-5' apart. No thinning and we get a nice ground cover. I could probably plant the rows even closer.

Do you think you will try fall watermelons again this year?
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm 2 ай бұрын
Probably not. I've found it better to just stagger my spring plantings so I can extend the harvest. But not a fall planting.

I ordered CRACKER JACK F1 OG from Johnny's Seeds. For a pollinator, I am thinking of using Yellow Doll, a variety that grows well in my area (Sonoma County, California). Do you think that's an okay choice for a pollinator? Thank you

Hey Travis do these evergreen shallots supposed to go to seed? Mine are putting out seed heads right now. They didn't multiply a lot either but they've had the same fertilizer as the bulbing onions, just not as much because they are so big and dark green they don't look to need quite as much. I want to grow more than I have space for but I fully intend on trying to grow a few melons this year in a raised bed. Why don't you try it in one of your Ollie beds, I'd like to see if it's possible. What garden space I do have ( it's very little) I'm going to put winter squash aka pumpkins in.

My evergreen shallots formed scapes also this spring. I don't know if I did the right thing or not but I cut the off thinking it would encourage more dividing bulbs.
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm 2 ай бұрын
From what I understand, you can harvest the seeds if you'd like. Or just wait and save the bulbils for replanting in late summer/early fall.

Would it be a good idea to nick the rounded end off of ALL seeds to get them to germinate faster?
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm 2 ай бұрын
Wouldn't hurt, but not as necessary with the seeded ones which usually germinate pretty easy.

I could be wrong but I think Ace just produces flowers and not melons. I planted some orange crisp and Ace last year and only got fruit from the orange crisp plants.
@LazyDogFarm

You might be right. I've never planted the Ace. I know the commercial guys around here plant not-so-edible varieties as the pollinator.

Ace will grow cantaloupe-sized fruit that is not that good. Grow a desirable seeded type you like to get both a pollinator and a great eating seeded watermelon@@LazyDogFarm
