I grow sweet potatoes, potatoes, heirloom tomatoes, okra, squash, zucchini, garlic, ginger, red onions, etc., in my apartment, using a grow light system. Considering what is going in, and the demoncraps's New World Order, everyone should start growing their own food. I used a 5 gallon tub, drilled holes, put medium to large river rocks in the bottom to facilitate drainage, for growing my sweet potatoes, red & golden potatoes. My veggies look great and already harvesting. Been growing jalapeno peppers, bell peppers, Anaheim chili peppers, etc. They produced a lot of food! All grown inside of a small apartment! If I can do it, anyone can! Thank you. Oh, and I am from Orlando, FL, so I know all about heat & humidity. I now luve in Southeast Idaho....love it! I will succession grow all year round, too. And I just threw potatoes with eyes into the soil.....and any potato will grow jyst fine doing tgat. No need for potato slips. Just make sure your potato has eyes growing. Can even buy a store potato, put it galfway into water, let roots grow, put in soil. Easy, and no need for slips. You can grow ANY fruit & veggie bought from a store to grow in your home/yard. Yep!

Way to go with the containers. Nothing says freedom like growing your own food, knowing exactly what is in the soil. And living in Southeast Idaho has to be a great bonus.

My plan...is to circle the vines over the surface of the pot and hope they take root! Or cut some for more slips! I'm getting a real late start on sweet potatoes this year too!

Perfect timing! Planting out my sweet potato slips is on my list of things to do today. I am in Ontario Canada and have to wait until early June for the weather to settle and warm up some. I did plant a couple of tubs up and sit them in my greenhouse about 3 weeks ago just in case the weather didn't cooperate. This way I can be pretty sure I would have a few potatoes for seed next year in case the entire crop failed. I have been growing sweet potatoes in raised beds for the past 4 years with pretty good success. Last year wasn't great but I had problems with chipmunks and squirrels eating my vines shortly after they were set out. I think once the roots take hold the critters are not as interested , maybe the leaves and vines get a bit too tough or bitter for them.So this year I am planting most of my slips in large planters similar to yours and that way I can protect them easier when they first go in until they are well established. Thanks for the video, take care and stay safe. Sandie.

grow for how long? any maintenance during growing season?
@GrowAndEatThis
@GrowAndEatThis Жыл бұрын
how long? at least 100 days. 120 is better if your season is long enough. I fertilize every 2 weeks, more often if we get a real heavy rain. Organic fish emulsion, worm castings, worm tea, any of the xxxxTones tha are all roughly 4-4-4 more or less. Even watering is very important if you want sweet potatoes and not just a ton of hairy roots.

Good reason to start them in dirt from the beginning. That is what I do now. If you have water roots and want to make them 'dirt' roots, be sure they are very wet all the time. If you do that they should make dirt roots pretty quick. Hope that helps.

The variety you are probably planting is called Murasaki. It was developed by Louisiana State University. Murasaki means purple in Japanese. Murasaki have a purplish skin but a white interior. Choosing the Japanese name has caused no end to the confusion associated with this variety.
@GrowAndEatThis
@GrowAndEatThis 2 жыл бұрын
That is what they are, Murasaki. They are really good. Basically a cross in taste and texture with a baking potato and a sweet potato. They are really expensive here in Georgia so I grow lots of them. The orange ones are more readily available but I still grow all I can.

Check the bottom of the container and see what kind of plastic the container is. Type 1,2,4 and 5 are considered food safe. Other numbers or no numbers are not. That is a very quick way to 'maybe' know.

I started out with organic sweet potatoes from the grocery store. I have several videos up on how to get them to sprout. I will be starting them in a couple of months. They want it hot outside so don't rush to get plants that won't live outside too early.
@Chainyanker007
@Chainyanker007 2 жыл бұрын
You have to get the sweet potatoes from an organic store or farmers market because the supermarket ones are sprayed with a chemical that prevents the potato from sprouting. No amount of scrubbing will make those sprout, they have to be organic.

I wouldn't think so! If you are in zone 5b or 6, you are actually a little early to be planting out. Just make sure your soil is warm. Sweet potatoes are a warm weather crop. But why are you using "chunks"? With Sweet Potatoes you normally either plant out small sweet potatoes that have started sprouting or slips.

Planting small whole potatoes or cut pieces of potato is the way to do the regular potatoes. Russets, red, yukons, etc. Sweet potatoes do better with slips. When I plant small whole sweet potatoes and do not get many roots to eat. Lots of tops but no roots.
