My potatoes are in grow bags and following this method is producing better results than anything else I have ever tried, and I've been growing in ground potatoes for about 30 years. So those of you who have said he doesn't understand potato plants, don't knock it until you have tried it.

I just pruned my Kennebec potatoes after seeng this, a 44 foot row. Man are they nice now and you can see light at the base and the air flow is superb. All of those leaves were in danger of getting soil born bacteria and didn't get any light to be productive anyway. This is a great tip and something that never would have crossed my mind. Thanks for the advice, I know it will be very beneficial. I bet it helps keep slugs at bay too since it's not dark and overly moist. Plus now I can scatter the "Slug Bait" Iron phosphate granules to do them in. 👍🏻

I have 10 acres and my garden is in the ground and my First crop was planted in February, live in Southern Illinois USA. Our winter’s have changed but even if it has frozen I still plant them, when it’s getting warmer and the green tops appear. I top them out about 3 times, using bone meal and grey lime a couple of times for fertilizer. I just cut the tops off to about 6 inches and after the 3rd time I let them grow. But still trim off some leaves. Same as I do my tomatoes and vine crops.

I already find that growing in a grow bag has been fantastic and I may try it on my fall crop when I plant in a month or so (I have a super long growing season here). My current crop is dying back already so it’s too late to try this on them though I’m curious to see how it affects my harvest in the fall. Learn something new everyday! Thanks!

I heard that heat is bad for potatos. I planted my first crop and they have tall leaves but arent dying off yet, but now we are getting into high 80's, not sure what I should do. I will use these tips on my next crop tho! Oh, when i dig these up will I have to amend the soil or will it be ok to just use liquid fertilizer on them? Ty for your help!!
@Greentgarden
@Greentgarden Жыл бұрын
Yeah potatoes are not the best in hot weather Also try to plant or or keep them in a cooler shaded area , liquid fertilizer or any fertilizer is good for a boost.. If you plant in a container, always remove some of the lower lease for good air flow and it helps the plants a lot.. every 2 to 3 weeks. I sprinkle a little bit of used coffee grounds to help keep away some bugs and also help the plant as a small fertilizer..

What kind of potatoes are you growing?Is this process the same for sweet potatoes and red/white potatoes? Sweet potatoes grow long vines very fast and look great in the garden as ground cover or pouring over the edge of a big pot.

There are russet potatoes, and yes for most potatoes.. with sweet potatoes Prune them back anytime their length becomes excessive. Also, cut off any damaged stems and ones that have become leggy with little foliage...

Where on Long Island? I’m a second year gardener in south Amityville and my garden spans across two waterfront properties so everything is in raised beds or containers. I grow my potatoes in 25-30 gallon grow bags and I bury the seed potatoes up to the top of the container. I don’t hill therefore I don’t prune. In this case do you still recommend pruning? Once all of the stems and leaves are about 18 inches tall I mulch with straw to avoid green potatoes. Great info on the flowers. I’m running out to cut them all off now.

@Greentgarden
@Greentgarden 10 ай бұрын
Well, you could tie it up if you want to, especially if you need to save space in your garden. And as it's bushy, it's always good to prune on the lower part of this. We have a better airflow.. keeping the plant healthier.. A good thing to do to this as a plan grow. You prune on the bottom and you add more soil so you can get more potatoes

my potatoe plants are a few feet high. We dug 8 in trenches and started them like that. Theyre doing well but..tall! We have covered them once but I didnt know I could prune them. So, it looks like I should and it looks like its wise to prune off the flower buds. Theyre getting ready to open. What would you do? If I pruned the growing tips down...would that harm the plants?

Thankyou. So what I understand is this...Its ok to prune the main growing tips (tops) and stems and several leaves within reason of course, without damaging the growth if its 40 inches tall? The flowers have not opened yet but many buds are on the plants...and its ok to prune all the buds off too? I just want to make sure I'm super clear.

I just found this video and finding out I'm making a few mistakes already! I planted a very dried out potato with several buds about a month ago. I wasn't sure it would grow, I'd be drying it for about 8 months. I chose a rather shallow, but wide pot and to my surprise it really just blew up! All of the eyes are growing into huge stalks! Now I am wondering if I should cut down the smaller ones and maybe one or more of the larger ones. From this single potato there are at least nine stalks and they are tall! One of them is about 15" already and I planted this potato maybe like 5 weeks ago! I have never ever grown a potato before so when I saw all the stalks I was pretty happy, lol They haven't begun to flower yet, so I'll keep an eye out for that. Thanks for the tips, I will be covering some of the exposed roots with more soil tonight after I do some pruning but is it too late to do that now at this point or do I still have a chance to increase the yield? I mean, honestly if I get one potato from it, it would replace the one I didn't eat and that would be awesome! But more would be better! I appreciate this video, thank you for sharing your tips with us!! 💖 Also, its been drinking like a gallon of water a day (its been in the upper 90's/lower 100's here in NM) Is that enough water or too much water? It seems to like that just fine but after watching your video i wonder if im giving it too much water... Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you in advance!

So Potato plants produce flowers during the end of their growing season... Once the plant potato has flowers, wait a week to 2 then good to harvest or you could also wait till the plant dries out from the top and looks like it's dying .. I recommend when you harvest your potatoes store a couple of them in a nice warm place and within 2-3 weeks you'll have perfect fresh seeding potatoes and one potato could give you multiple plants .. to regrow..

There alot of space in between the leaf sets so I dont know how much of growth I can take without ruining the plants PLUS I didnt expect them to grow so HIGH and there no room to walk in between the rows and there are 4 rows., 20 feet long .....BIG SIGH>>>:( Some have fallen over...many are up and reaching FWD to the west.. One thing I remembered was that all last year, I threw banana peels and coffee grounds in that garden.....I couldnt figure out why theres so much leaf grow because the GAIA fertilizer we applied at planting was 2-8-4. Anyhow...thats that. So, yesterday, I bought a big bag of kennebec seed taters on clearance for only $2. So, Im going to plant many in containers.
