My potatoes are in grow bags and following this method is producing better results than anything else I have ever tried, and I've been growing in ground potatoes for about 30 years. So those of you who have said he doesn't understand potato plants, don't knock it until you have tried it.

I have 10 acres and my garden is in the ground and my First crop was planted in February, live in Southern Illinois USA. Our winter’s have changed but even if it has frozen I still plant them, when it’s getting warmer and the green tops appear. I top them out about 3 times, using bone meal and grey lime a couple of times for fertilizer. I just cut the tops off to about 6 inches and after the 3rd time I let them grow. But still trim off some leaves. Same as I do my tomatoes and vine crops.

I just pruned my Kennebec potatoes after seeng this, a 44 foot row. Man are they nice now and you can see light at the base and the air flow is superb. All of those leaves were in danger of getting soil born bacteria and didn't get any light to be productive anyway. This is a great tip and something that never would have crossed my mind. Thanks for the advice, I know it will be very beneficial. I bet it helps keep slugs at bay too since it's not dark and overly moist. Plus now I can scatter the "Slug Bait" Iron phosphate granules to do them in. 👍🏻

Where on Long Island? I’m a second year gardener in south Amityville and my garden spans across two waterfront properties so everything is in raised beds or containers. I grow my potatoes in 25-30 gallon grow bags and I bury the seed potatoes up to the top of the container. I don’t hill therefore I don’t prune. In this case do you still recommend pruning? Once all of the stems and leaves are about 18 inches tall I mulch with straw to avoid green potatoes. Great info on the flowers. I’m running out to cut them all off now.

Hi from Canada. Question: what about droopy yellow leaves? Should I remove the yellow droopy leaves? I would think yes, as rot might encourage mold or fungus. What is your experience? I may have pests, or fungus or may be overwatering. Likely not overwatering as my I am only watering from a h20 can as our city has extreme watering restrictions. Also note: we are experiencing extreme heat.
@Greentgarden
@Greentgarden 3 ай бұрын
I am so sorry to hear absolutely! I would prune off some of the lower leaves.. Definitely think the weather is too hot for potato... Also I would think it's either too much water or lack of nutrients.. Prune out the lower leaves so this way you get a good air flow. Try to water every 2 to 3 days and try to increase your fertilizer and repeat every 2 to 3 weeks... Also, you could always check on any leaves. Make sure there's no bugs hiding .. Also try not to water the leaves , hold the hose directly to the soil.. Once you do this give it a couple days it should be good

my potatoe plants are a few feet high. We dug 8 in trenches and started them like that. Theyre doing well but..tall! We have covered them once but I didnt know I could prune them. So, it looks like I should and it looks like its wise to prune off the flower buds. Theyre getting ready to open. What would you do? If I pruned the growing tips down...would that harm the plants?
@Greentgarden
@Greentgarden Жыл бұрын
If your plant is way too big around 40 inches tall I would definitely prune the top and any flowers .. The plant will focus more energy towards the potato ..
@mssavedin92
@mssavedin92 Жыл бұрын
Thankyou. So what I understand is this...Its ok to prune the main growing tips (tops) and stems and several leaves within reason of course, without damaging the growth if its 40 inches tall? The flowers have not opened yet but many buds are on the plants...and its ok to prune all the buds off too? I just want to make sure I'm super clear.
@Greentgarden

@Greentgarden
@Greentgarden Жыл бұрын
Well, you could tie it up if you want to, especially if you need to save space in your garden. And as it's bushy, it's always good to prune on the lower part of this. We have a better airflow.. keeping the plant healthier.. A good thing to do to this as a plan grow. You prune on the bottom and you add more soil so you can get more potatoes

Good Morning. Question on the potato plant. When I found the Hornworm on my potato plant, all the leaves have been eaten. But now the plant looks like it's dying. Is that natural after a worm attack. ? I wished I could take a photo and share like with Facebook. Lol.
@Greentgarden

So if the hornworms eat too much , then the plant could die , but sometimes the plant will recover.. Also, sometimes when your plant is dying from the top it means your potatoes are ready to harvest.. ..

Well, when it's time to harvest, the plant will die From the top come down... If the plant doesn't look dry out or die. Do not harvest yet because the potato will not be full size... You could always trim the top if too long

I heard that heat is bad for potatos. I planted my first crop and they have tall leaves but arent dying off yet, but now we are getting into high 80's, not sure what I should do. I will use these tips on my next crop tho! Oh, when i dig these up will I have to amend the soil or will it be ok to just use liquid fertilizer on them? Ty for your help!!
@Greentgarden
@Greentgarden Жыл бұрын
Yeah potatoes are not the best in hot weather Also try to plant or or keep them in a cooler shaded area , liquid fertilizer or any fertilizer is good for a boost.. If you plant in a container, always remove some of the lower lease for good air flow and it helps the plants a lot.. every 2 to 3 weeks. I sprinkle a little bit of used coffee grounds to help keep away some bugs and also help the plant as a small fertilizer..

So that could caused by hot temperature with moist soil or if the potato left a bit too long... Sometimes the potato falls off from the root and then we'll start sprouts.. You could replant those or you could cut out the sprouts part , and eat the rest of potatoes

So it's growing which is good , It's good to add soil as the potatoes are growing from the bottom of the root. It's also good to remove some of the lower leaf so nothing touches the soil. Also you get good air flow which is healthy for your plant or earth worm should be fine..

@Greentgarden
@Greentgarden Жыл бұрын
So as the planet grow and get taller, it will produce new roots. And the best thing you are supposed to do is to add more salt to cover the roots. If not, it will be straight to the top that's actually normal.. So that's why I normally prune lower leaves and add more soils I could get more potatoes...

Look up determinate v indeterminate potatoes. It might be the variety you planted. Determinate grow on one level and are usually fast growing early ones (but there does seem to be some debate) while main crop are mostly indeterminate, so grow on many levels, hence the need to hill.

So Potato plants produce flowers during the end of their growing season... Once the plant potato has flowers, wait a week to 2 then good to harvest or you could also wait till the plant dries out from the top and looks like it's dying .. I recommend when you harvest your potatoes store a couple of them in a nice warm place and within 2-3 weeks you'll have perfect fresh seeding potatoes and one potato could give you multiple plants .. to regrow..
