What I have done is order asian pear scions from Burnt Ridge and grafted them to the assian pear trees and european pear trees. I have one tree that has eight types of asian pears.

One nursery sold me a pear tree and said it was self pollinating, it wasn't. A different nursery sold me two trees that they said were compatable to cross pollinate each other, they weren't. Always do your own research before purchasing!
@KhangStarr
@KhangStarr 5 жыл бұрын
Agreed! Many of these varieties may fruit on their own but very few. With a pollinator, they will produce more fruits. I think it also depends on the region. Some could be self fruitful in one region and not another.

Hi Khang, your videos are awesome and what I've been looking for. I bought one New Century Asian Pear Dwarf and one Starking® Hardy Giant™ Asian Pear Dwarf six years ago. I don't have any knowledge of taking care of them. Last two years they did produce fruit, not a lot, not big either but taste good. I saw the trees and fruits were attacked by ants, bees and squirrels. During the fruit growing season more and more pears would have black spots outside and got part of inside bad too. I guess that's caused by bees. I saw squirrel climb upon the tree, steal the pear and run away. I would like to adopt some of your methods to protest my trees and fruits. I have two questions and hope you can help: 1) what is the product name you use as glue on the edge of the cup to prevent ants from climbing up the tree and where you got it? 2) where did you get the white bag you use to cover the pear or did you make it yourself, what material is that and where you bought it? Hope I can do a lot better with your help this year. Thanks in advance. Peter

I really enjoyed your video. I have a 20th Century tree that I love. This year the Monsoon was really strong and some of the fruit got really big. I wonder if they'll always be this big if I thin the fruit? I thinned some of the branches but not all of them. The tree is about 6 years old. I loved it so much that I planted a Korean Giant a couple of years ago. The first summer was really hard on it and it almost died. I cut off all the dead branches and left it alone. I noticed that it has a lot of new growth but they're all growing straight up, making the tree really narrow. I guess I should cut a few off, but I wonder if I prune it so some of new branches will grow outward? I don't have a really big yard, so I planted it kind of close to the 20th Century tree. Wish I had known about the 3-in-one tree you got.
@petrjuhos1254
@petrjuhos1254 Жыл бұрын
Hi Patti. Trim the surrounding branches in the spring - always cut to the trunk, so that the weak branches to the eye (bud) inward 1-2 mm above the bud (eye) slightly obliquely and the stronger branches to the bud (eye) outward. Reduce the number of branches according to the density in the given tree crown. If the branches cross, you must cut one of them at the trunk just behind the branch ring. Shorten common branches in the crown by 1/3 of their length. After cutting, coat larger branches with tree balm or splitting wax. Let it grow!

You can thin the fruit heavily so that the weight doesn’t end up breaking limbs and killing the tree eventually. Thinning will also help get better size and sugar content to your fruits. Good luck!

Where did you get the first tree from? I ordered one from Stark Bros., and it never grew and turned completely black within 3 months. ☹ I bought one from a local nursery (Green Side Up...they'reawesome! ), and it was perfect, but they only had one variety. My local Home Depot and Lowe's didn't have any Asian pears. Currently I'm trying to germinate some seeds from a Korean Giant pear that I got from the Korean market.

I have 2 Asian pears and one produces way too much fruit to keep up with! So much that they can't mature. The tree gets covered with hundreds of fruit but only 1 or 2 mature. This year I pruned it back pretty hard and will be knocking off as many blooms as I can this week. The other has been problematic from early on. Glad to see you using Willis Orchards, I've been thinking about getting some elderberries from them. Good luck with your trees.

Hi Khang! Thank you very much for your tutorial. I purchased a Hosui Asian Pear tree back in 2021 online. It came in a package with the root wrapped in straw. According to the directions, it said to keep the bare root in the straw and to make the hole twice as big as the bare root. It is now 2023, and I have not seen anything on this tree. It has a strong root, but the branches have not yielded buds or flowers. Is this normal? Should I redig the tree out and take out the straw? I am not sure what to do.

A few weeks ago I grafted Asian pear scions to an unknown apple variety that produces very little mediocre fruit and every single scion budded out leaves and one is even flowering. I thought Asian pears and apples were not compatible for grafting but as of now the Asian pear buds are growing beautifully. Should I remove the Asian pear flowers from the scion since it is the first year the scions were grafted or will it be able produce fruit in the first year?

...just bought my 4/1 tree today from Willis too. How much did your 4 in 1 grow in 1 year? I’m a bit concerned as it is grafted on a semi-dwarf stock so it will grow to 12-15’ in the ground and fairly wide out. I initially wanted a dwarf pear but decided that having 4 varieties was worth it vs the dwarf. The area I have, I don’t really want to plant and have it grow 15’ so I’ll probably air pot it instead. Did you prune/pluck off the 1st time buds in order to get larger/more fruit next year? ....Hows your StarkBro tree doing? I bought from them 3x over the last 5 years and you pretty much get a small stick. And IMHO they seem to be less resistant to diseases too. I probably will not order from them again. Another company I like is Citrus.com. I ordered a dwarf satsuma tree a few years ago and now ready to replant from air pot to ground. Btw, I noticed you have mulch covering up to your main stem, shouldnt you be leaving 6”-12” around the main stem. Thats for sharing your trees!
