Hello everyone, In today's video we are going to learn about the benefits of growing Ice cream beans (Inga) in your food forest or permaculture farm.
The Ingas are a genus of nitrogen-fixing plants that are very versatile when it comes to being used in the permaculture setting.
The benefits the ice cream bean trees provide are
1. Nitrogen Fixing - They are able to take the nitrogen in the air and make it more readably available for the trees around it below in the soil.
2. Chop-n-drop - Since ice cream beans grow fast and have a high germination rate they are used in abundance to grow fast and chop down mulch to be used to build up soil health.
3. Drought & Flood Tolerant - These trees are able to withstand both extreme drought and flooding conditions with very little care at all.
4. Pollinator Attractor - Produces flowers that attract pollinators
5. Fruit Producer - Produces an edible seed pod that tastes like sweet vanilla & very healthy.
The inga varieties I am growing at my farm currently as of March 2021 are
Inga Vera (From John Painters tree in Pine Island)
Inga Spectabilis (Seeds came from Colombia)
Inga Feuilleei (From Real Sweet Farms )
Inga Edulis (From Sulcata Grove)
Overall I am utilizing the ingas for many reasons, those reasons include Chop-n-drop mainly, as well for fruit consumption, soil health regeneration, as well as having a beautiful inga tree.
Thank you for watching this video on how I grow Ice Cream Beans, I will make another Inga update once these trees grow a little more/ begin to flower.
