Growing Miltoniopsis in warm climates - Culture and care tips

Today we take a closer look at Miltoniopsis Orchids and figure out how to care for them in a warm climate!

Miltoniopsis orchids are cool to intermediate growers, which don't tolerate heat and dryness very well. For this reason they don't make excellent houseplants, but there are some things which can help!
They love moisture and air at the same time, so choosing the medium for them can be tricky. Too dry, or prone to salt build up media are not going to be easy to work with.

Humidifiers will help, also make sure that sun doesn't overheat the leaves and fertilize with half strength at first!

I live in south Louisiana where outside it is 98 degrees in the summer with humidity that runs about 89% or higher. I started growing these plants indoors about fifteen years ago. I never put them outside. I have about 12 plants and I never killed any. An expert orchid grower told me what to do to get these orchids to grow. I followed his advice and my plants are always in bloom producing spike after spike. First of all I grow them in a spare room that has a window that gets early morning sun. In the summer and winter my central air and heat is set at 74 degrees. I have the plants close to the window, I went to WalMart and bought a small table fan that is pointed on the plants but it moves left to right while it is on. I also have a small humidifier that I got from ebay for ten bucks. The humidifier looks like a stick and I put it in a empty plastic jug that is filled with water. You can see the stick put out a cool mist. I found that the most important thing to have while growing these plants is water quality. I tried a few of these plants about thirty years ago and I killed all four of the plants that I purchased at an orchid show. My expert friend told me to buy distilled water and give them another try. I took his advice and the few plants that I bought started growing. Hauling jugs of distilled water home every two days became tiresome. I searched the internet and found a water distiller for 75 dollars. The name of the brand for the distiller is Vevor. I only use organic fertilizer on them. The brand I use is doctor earth. Since it's organic I don't have to worry about salt build up since it doesn't contain any. I hope that this helps some of you.

The Miltoniopsis on the left looks very similar to the 'Red Chestnut' variety...beautiful!

Mine is in NZ sphagnum, here in NY. She's in glass with a reservoir of lava rock at the bottom. I just make sure that moss stays happy around her. I always do a second drain after watering and she lives in the bathroom with a lot of humidity. I have 2 spikes getting ready to open soon! I can't wait!

Thank you so MUCH for doing this video. I love this type of orchid, but have resisted purchasing because I can't seem to keep them alive. I have just one left that I have been nursing along. It has no roots and is indoors. I am going to try and grow it in a clear, ventilated, pot with sphagnum to see if it will grow roots. I've learned a great deal from your information. Can you do a video on Iwanagara? They're the other type of orchid that gives me challenges.

One thing I just discovered. I removed the flowering Miltoniopsis from the pot it came in. Placed it in a new ventilated pot without changing the medium it came in and there was no bud loss. None!!! All the buds bloomed!!! I’ll wait to change the medium after the flowers have faded. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼✨

Recently they are available in India through Online sellers and community growers. I love them. And i really want to have the biggest collection i could dream of. I was struggling with the fertilizer routine and temperature preferences although i kept mine in AC and Humidifier. I was giving 1/4 of fertilizer strenght but they are not looing their best. I just bought 2 Miltoniopsis a week ago, they are so beautiful and one smell so good. The yellow one smells but not that strong like the other one. My problem is that the yellow one has buds and are getting yellow/brown... don't know why?

Ah...bud blast what a shame might be because of the reason of changing climates or other reasons...

@@fil1220 I read up on bud blast when the buds on my sweet little "Darling" phalaenopsis started turning brown. Apparently it can be caused by: too much water, too little water. Too much nitrogen, too little nitrogen. Too much warmth, too much cold. In my case, I think it was from the big gas-burning wall heater in our dining room, but it could have been almost anything. When I finally repotted, the roots were in good shape (only snipped off four), so that wasn't it.
