Repotting a new Miltoniopsis Orchid - When and how

Today we repot one of my new Miltoniopsis orchids which is in dire need of attention! Here is the proper way to start off the journey!

Miltoniopsis orchids are some of the most sensitive orchids I have ever grown. For this reason I recently decided to play it safe and use conventional media and approach to their care and things went much better!
Miltoniopsis orchids should be repotted soon after purchase, especially if the buds and flowers are already falling. Even if the orchid still has flowers, but has shrivelled pseudobulbs, it is time to remove the spike and repot the orchid.
The best medium for these orchids can vary depending on environment, but no matter the setup, this orchid should always be constantly moist, it really hates to be dry, especially in warm temperatures.

Danny: first, your amazing videos are even better (if that's possible?) in 4K. Second, I'm a chemist, and I just wanted to let you know - which I'm sure that you do, but your viewers may not - that hydrogen peroxide must be stored in a light-proof (completely opaque) container, until the second it is used. I noticed that you talked about H2O2 at length today, but didn't mention this. It's REALLY important, because light (or temperatures much that are not too much higher than room temperature) causes it to decompose into water and oxygen, and it'll be useless. Also, don't buy more than you plan to use in a relatively short amount of time, because it does just decompose over time, and you'll be left with water in an expanded container, due to the oxygen that is created in the decomposition reaction. Just wanted to add this. L❤️ve your channel, your advice has made my orchids actually HAPPY! Thank you!!

Hi, yes I know that is why I have it in an opaque container. Funny story, I used to have it in a transparent bottle and kept the bottle in the closet, which was just fine. But the number of comments regarding the light issue became unbearable lol :)))) thanks for the info about the breaking down, always appreciate a chemist input :D

Terrific timing! I am about to repot 2 of these, and wasn't sure about the media to pot with. Thank you! Many times when watching your videos, I don't recognize the flowers and need to see the base of the orchids to know what they are. Being new at orchids, once the flowers are gone, I need the reference of the base of the plants to know which is what. You provide an excellent education for the public!

Hi Danni! Regarding hydrogen peroxide, I discovered that it is also very helpful in removing media such as bark that is stuck on roots. After I’ve soaked and removed the majority of the media, if there are pieces that don’t want to come off the roots easily, I spray them, wait a couple minutes, and then the pieces are usually easier to remove.

Hi Danni - I bought one of your new Teespring MOG gear yesterday -looks very nice!! Great video as always --thank you - My Militoniopsis is ....hanging in there ....bought in March 2018 - very crammed in pot - waited for flowers to fade then repotted to Leca but it hated it so I let it sit with nothing in a kind of terrarium but it was longing the tight quarters again - so potted it up with repotme bark - and ...yay new growth ! No idea what it is yet - coming from the side of the Pseudobulb so we'll see =)

Wow I did not realize how common snails were in the pots of European soil-potted orchids! I’m nervous to use Hydrogen peroxide on roots as I haven’t had good experience, but it did help with stem rot once tho. I also haven’t dealt with snails as much as you have. That seems like the safer way to deal with them. Maybe I will try not to be afraid of H2O2 anymore haha. That red Miltoniopsis is simply beautiful! Omg and I just noticed your mech shop! Adorable! 😊

Hi Danny. My sick miltoniaopsis is in a spaghnum moss and bark mixture in a sw pot. She seems to be doing better. She did have more roots than yours thank goodness. She had what cactus growers refers to as "wet leaf" I believe. I had to cut almost all of her leaves to about 6" in height. It's only been a month but I can see a bit of improvement. I thought I was going to lose her. I've had her for 3 years although she's never bloomed for me. I changed her setup and fertilizer. So hopefully next year I'll have blooms!

Can you give us an idea of the proper color of the leaves for healthy growth? Light green, dark green, yellow green, etc??? Also, what does an overwatered Oncidium look like --- the pseudobulbs, etc? Tragic story: I bought a beautiful Miltoniopsis, like your red one, from the supermarket. I've chosen one with more bulbs and a new growth, hoping to have a vigorous plant and new roots soon. When I arrived home and started my repotting ritual.... the stake was impaling the orchid's rhizome, and the rhizome started to decay and fall apart. I cleaned as best as I could, I bathed it in H2O2 but I really don't know if my plant will survive! I am so furious about the workers who don't give a damn about clients and plants and just automatically place some stakes!!!

Dear Dany yesterday I trashed 5 miltoniopsis that i repotted last month in sphagnum. All of them were rotted... Too risky medium. Lekka and semihydro is much more safe. I enjoy your videos.

The black tray is a bit better, thanks for that! My PC can't play your video in 2160p, it lags like hell, but the difference between 720p and 1440 is not big in my eyes. About 10% sharper. It's good, but I don't know if the rendering time is really worth it for you. Anyway this was a really informative video!

I was nervous to repot my miltoniopsis. It was still in an initial soft plastic cup from the flower shop. Planted it in pure sphagnum because the bark it came in would dry out very quickly.

Do Miltonias do well in LECA s/h? I just bought a miltonia spectabilis var. moreliena and I want to repot it in LECA s/h. It has 2 directions of growth and both are producing new growths

Hi Danny. Saw a miltoniopsis in an orchid show a week ago but decided to pass on it. But know with your influence will purchase one soon 😭 and hope won't lead to its dimise. Such a pretty "little" guy you have there, hope he'll do well. Would it be a good idea to put a wire underneath with a ring for better stabilization ? What tds was water you used for watering ? Your camera used is doing a terrific job. But your videos has always been super sharp even with 1080. The details on the black tray is very pronounced. Was going to ask you if adding “quantum” to the rootless orchid would help or be a good idea ?

I have a question about flushing the pots and medium. You've said in previous videos it's okay to just use tap water to flush. I just checked my tap water with my new TDS meter and the ppm is 637! Should I not flush my pots with my tap water anymore?

Hi! What should I do if I have a miltoniopsis with one old small bulb, one large bulb which has a dark and wet patch on the bottom and a new growth? I am afraid if I intervene on the rotting bulb I will damage the whole plant and compromise the new growth! Sorry if I am stressing you!

I just received a miltonidium that is extremely overgrown in a tiny pot, with one flower spike in bloom. It arrived rather dehydrated-looking (some curling of the leaves and a bit of curling on the flower petals, too. I immediately hydrated, but am concerned that the extreme overgrowth out of the pot means I can't wait to divide & repot it. Your video here on miltoniopsis says the shock will be too much if I leave the flower spike on. How should I handle this?

Hi, I'm having a hard time identifying with Orchid I bought today, it was labeled as a Phalaenopsis, but obviously its not!!! I'm thinking it is either a Cymbidium, or perhaps a Miltonia, as the leaves are thin and look more like a giant version of grass. I was wondering if i could send you a photograph somehow, I'm sort of panicking because I want it to thrive. It currently has one stalk with buds, and has yet to bloom (I bought it on sale, and I actually really like buying orchids that have not yet flowered, or have finished flowering, its like a beautiful surprise)...but with that said I can . not recognize it by its flowers, and I am scared that if i do not provided with cooled night temps, it will end up not blooming!

I think you shouldn't keep water with fertilizer sitting for more than a few hours. I've done it for a few days and the fertilizer starts to solidify in the water and it becomes slimy.

I know I’m commenting a year later, what did you end up using as potting medium. My milt is in bark chips and just need to keep it wet so I water 2-3 times a week. I’m in Canada.

My orchid is covered in aphids! I think they came in with the orchid bark when I repotted my miltoniopsis. How do you get rid of them without harming the orchid? Should I get rid of the bark and wipe down the leaves/flowers with alcohol? Can I spray with hydrogen peroxide like you do? In the US, pharmacies sell 3% peroxide. Do I need to dilute it or can I use it straight from the bottle?

I dont understand if my phalaenopsis roots are rotting or drying up. but all of my orchids are having roots that are dying, but i cant tell if im watering too much or too little. ZeepeX dead roots from under watering will be shriveled. Over watered will be mushy and black.

Cymbidiums don't have those egg-shaped pseudobulbs, so you can tell them from miltoniopsises quite easily. Might still confuse miltoniopsis and some oncidiums, though...
