A teenager is nine months pregnant.
GROWING PAINS is used with permission from Ellen Rodnianski. Learn more at ellenrodniansk....
Zhenya is a 15-year-old girl. She's also nine months pregnant. When her school is about to be inspected by the city, Zhenya is essentially kicked out by school leadership, who fear her pregnancy will tarnish their reputation.
Left to her own devices, she turns to family and friends, but she faces increasing amounts of rejection from her community, making her angrier than ever. No one is there for her as she wanders her city, and even her baby's father, Boris, is kept from her, thanks to his overprotective mother. But just when Zhenya seems the most alone, she finds an island of understanding and kindness, though whether or not it's sustainable is another question entirely.
Written by Tanya Leonova and directed with great humor and tenderness by Ellen Rodnianski, this short drama tracks the search for love and understanding from a young woman essentially abandoned by her community. Zhenya is, on the surface, like many other teenagers. She's smart, sarcastic, full of emotion and hormones. But she's also hugely pregnant, and she sparks negative reactions around her.
Of course, this makes Zhenya is even more sarcastic and spiky in demeanor, and the excellent character-centered writing offers keen observations of the negative cycle she finds herself in. Zhenya's search for connection and empathy at this most challenging point in her life drives the shape of the narrative, and her journey -- captured with a beautifully muted and dynamic visual naturalism -- offers a panorama of the relationships that form her life. Her family judges her; her friends are sweet but their ability to relate to her is limited. Zhenya realizes that she is increasingly alone emotionally.
Actor Polina Doroshkevich offers a multidimensional portrayal of Zhenya, capturing a teen's innate boldness and rebelliousness as well as the vulnerable girl lashing out at the world around her. And as the narrative carefully builds up to Zhenya's confrontation with the father of her baby, the audience suspects that Zhenya will finally meet her breaking point with the boy who got her pregnant and then abandoned her.
But then GROWING PAINS does something much different than expected, revealing its full humanity with a rich, measured characterization of Boris, played by actor Artem Raguzin with great empathy. The story wends its way into a more radiant, tender direction, one that makes us care for them as characters. It also results in a surprising decision by both teenagers, who reveal more emotional depth and compassion than given credit for by the world around them. As the pair take off into the film's final cliffhanger, audiences can't help but root for them, despite the odds or obstacles stacked up against them.

Hi H. 😊 I loved the film too. I also want to say I’m so sorry for the bad times Russia is having with Putin causing so much unhappiness. Most people know it is not the fault of the Russian people what is happening to Ukaraine. I am so sad for your soldiers and the way the world is blaming them. They were lied to by Putin and they don’t want to hurt civilians. They are hungry and angry at Putin for deceiving them. The whole world is on your side - nobody wants a war. Aaand that's one very sick society, bulldozing a young girl going through one of the most vulnerable moments of her life, punishing her endlessly for being young and fertile. All fail, family, friends, school, society at large, and as tends to be in real life, it's usually the woman alone who takes the burden. But Boris here was such a refreshing character, bringing back a sense of love and connection to this poor girl and their baby. Praise for all boys and men trying to do things right. Great short :)

Anywho I was 18 and he had just turned 21 and was a young father himself (his son was born 2 days after he turned 14, that was insane to me) and my mom didn't think he would stick around and tried to prepare me for that. Im glad he did. We are still together 18 years later and my son is now 18. His biological father jumped off the key bridge when he was an infant so we were extremely lucky he came into our life. Glad young love can make it. My parents started dating in junior high as well.

@Gangari TheWanderer you can't seriously think that getting pregnant at 15 and then running away is the proper course of action for kids! Did you miss the part about her not being able to go to school?!? She needs schooling (beyond HS) to make enough money to properly care for her baby! He needs to finish school so that he can also provide for his family. They're 15 ffs! She should have been on contraceptives or had an abortion so they both (actually the 3 of them) don't have to suffer the consequences of this one poor decision made in a split second of passion! They don't even have supportive families!

A child is always a blessing, not always easy, but definitely a blessing. The shame is not in the young girl's pregnancy, but the reaction/ treatment from those she encounters. And worst of all, her own mother, who's verbal and emotional abuse most likely began long before the pregnancy. No wonder her attitude is sour. I was very worried that this story would show her jumping off a bridge like the girl from the other school. Thank you for the positive ending though, saved my heart this morning. Babies having babies is definitely a scary thing, but with proper love and support, everything can work out just fine, and for the better, especially for the new baby. Love can make the world go 'round!

I liked this a lot. She was going through a horrible situation that was made worse by her own choices, societal pressure (she didn't make that baby alone) and the fact she was a scared, pregnant teenager! I felt sorry for her but at the same time she could be rude (which made sense considered how she was treated). Boris was a sweet guy but their plan to run away was awful. OMG, it's such a bad idea! I'm really happy they had that sweet moment but there's no way they're not going back home in like a week.

I think its interesting how this film pays attention to the double standard between men and women and sexual freedom. The young woman is shamed for becoming preganant as if it was a disease that she injected herself with where as the young man is protected from this disease in order that he can not be effected or effect the people around him (his mom). The young woman embodies youth and rebellion and is a symbol for indepedence
@7yep4336dfgvvh
@7yep4336dfgvvh 2 жыл бұрын
It's not about sexual freedom. It's about the fact the has the baby inside of her. Let's not forget it's always the woman's choice to kill the baby (even when the man doesn't want to), to keep the bay (even when the man doesn't want to), amd to extract money from the man (even when he doesn't want the baby). Given that women seem to have all the rights in that regard, and men none

This video was in a way relatable, of society's often cruel ways. The driver of the car for instance whom had nearly knocked over a pregnant girl, and instead of apologising, had yelled at her. And also, individuals in the queue for the bus whom had yelled rudely at her for wanting to get ahead in the queue, except for one lady whom had reminded the people in the queue to be civil. Personally, i have encountered similar situations, too many to name. Three notable incidents was when i had sat on a priority seat on a bus whilst pregnant, however, the driver had instructed myself to get off the priority seat. On another incident, was a man at the library whom had glaced at me a couple of times, thus making me feel uncomfortable. i had switched seats, however he begun yelling and had even caused physical damages by hitting me with his water bottle. On a third incident, there was a woman on board a bus service whom had yelled repeatedly and whom had used terms to suggest that i was of inferior intelligence, and whom had aggressively lurged forward a few times to cause physical contact with my bag and with myself, thus prompting me to tell her to keep her hands off my property, all because i had apparently bumped into her on the higher level of a double decker bus, while walking down the bus aisle, as i was in my third trimester of pregnancy and the bus was in motion. She has repeatedly demanded that i apologised to her though i could not caused more damage, than to have brushed against her while making my way to the seat, at most. Also, the protangonist, Zhenya's discrimination at school is similar to the discriminate that a pregnant woman would feel at work. The frustrations that she feels at being a potential single mother is very relatable, and her fears of having her baby's biological father not wanting to take responsibility for his actions are understandable. The mother of her baby's father is a stark constrast to her own mother. Her mother wants to be there for her baby as much as possible (though her over concern has led to her not allowing Zhenya to play a more responsible role in her own baby's life). Boris' mother is negligent, however, and would not play a part in her grandchild's life nor allow her son to be a father to his own child. She should find remedy to the situation.

The societal conformity which requires everyone to exhibit collective meanness really comes across harsh, but no so much so that kindness doesn't shine through here and there. I’m I the only one who wishes this was longer. I loved Boris’s character. I was too 15 and pregnant and my now husband and all four Parents along with hosts of aunts and uncles were so supportive. I lucked up at 15. And was still able to finish high school at 16. Thank god.

I feel silly saying this, I know these are fictional characters and the two kids are actors but the production, casting and acting was so good that, in my heart, at least, I became invested in their struggle. Anyway, I can only hope that for any youngsters like them who may be waking-up to the harsh realities of life and find themselves clinging to each other on a bus rushing them into an unknown future that the universe will reveal itself to them and allow them to find shelter and kindness within it's boundless, incomprehensible borders.

Wow, this was truly a little gem, loved it a lot, the lead actress was stunning and amazing. Pretty obvious to see why she was so abrasive and rude with all the hostility towards her and the immense difficulty of her situation. She also would have been angry inside at the situation she found herself in. A couple of scenes did bring tears to my eyes as I truly felt her pain and frustration. Well done.

These poor kids. I was so lucky my mom was so supportive and loving. I got pregnant when I was 14. I was too young to consent and as an autistic person I was easily manipulated but I would have been judged just like this girl in our culture. THANKFULLY my mom took me straight to a clinic and paid for a medical procedure so that I wouldn't have so suffer. It was 1984 and I've lived all these years without a single regret. It should be offered as a first line of treatment for pregnant children. I later had two children and those children and I have the same open and loving relationship. Both of them know if they ever need me I'm there, no judgment, no wagging fingers, just anything they need. My 32 year old daughter is still absolutely devoted to me. My 17 year old son thinks I can do no wrong. :)

At the age of 14, my son accompanied his 18-year-old cousin to the hospital to give birth to her first baby. As a single mother, my son was very excited about the event, but he also realized that her cousin was alone without the support of the baby's father, when he returned home, he told me that when his wife went to have their children, he would be with her at that time because that was his right. 🙏🌸

Translated To English: " small journey through the cruel soviet-conservative world, but without the gore, which makes this film novel very convincing. A great success is the lead actress Polina Doroshkevich, who created a very bright image with her expressive eyes and her smile. There is kindness in the film and some kind of youthful nonconformist attitude, which, by the way, is well conveyed by the performer of the role of Boris. Congratulations to the whole team on your success!"

I understand she got pregnant, but treating her like that will push her away and make her feel even more stressed out which is extremely harmful while having a baby. People need to really think about their actions and I’m not talking about the little girl who got pregnant. I’m sure she already knows what she did has huge consequences.

It's implied that she was thinking of taking her and her baby's life at the point where she gazed at the bridge, alone and condemned by everyone around her. Then Boris stepped up and, in a way, saved her and the baby's life. Now imagine if everyone else had treated her with forgiveness and kindness? Sure, she made a mistake and paid the consequence, but there comes a point when mercy is necessary.
