Seriously the best , most informative , encouraging video I have seen on full and semi water culture!!! Thank you so much!!!! I started the semi technique. Trying to save my oldest orchid from the grocery store... I had her for a little over half a year ... I wasn’t the best plant mom to her at first .... I didn’t know anything about plants... but thanks to covid I am now doing everything to keep her and her new sister happy along with some more house plants, carnivorous plants and succulents!!! I am learning every day and getting better everyday because of people like you! Thank you!!! Really dived into plants since the beginning of covid and I am addicted now ! Definitely listening to the silent voices of my little babies!

So happy to hear you are successful in rescuing your babies! We were all not the best plant moms at first but we learn and get better! I’m happy you have something else to think about and care for during this pandemic. It has certainly kept me in a better frame of mind! Thanks so much for watching and for sharing your story with me!

Ive been growing orchids since 12/2019..I rescued a phal frome home depot.She was by the doors where the cold air was on and off the plant stand that she was trapped on..and it was so cold!! (Long island,N.Y.) she was a mere 5bucks..she was ice cold,2 spikes with no signs of life ,mushy floppy leaves no plant id,and half her medium was on the floor.Well i took her home and put her in my living room with some christmas cactus for company and let her warm up for a day.Next day removed all her medium and she had a plug strangulating her roots..they were very dry but still were firm.I clipped off all dead ones and picked out a nice crystal glass for since all i had were plastic pots and were either2big or 2 small..i put room temp water in glass (i keep milk jugs of water to water all my house plants bc it has chlorine) so i propped up her leaves on rim of glass and set her in the south window..and waited about 4 days and named her hope,hope she would live.And she did! Her leaves became full and hard again..so wen you have mushy leaves you have to set them up so when she finally drinks they take on a better shape,other wise they will be bent. Hope has now grown 2 more leaves and has a healthy root system and is in water. I learned all this by watching this channel.. I now have 45 rescues..the supermarkets mark them way down after the main bloom time in store 3 to 3 weeks...then they throw them out!! So every time i grocery shop i bring home new ones..i now have mini phals also. I have also discovered that some of my girls like larger vessels than others,and i choose ones that have wide mouths for air flow. All my phals are in water with glass marbles on the bottom . I give them all names and keep a journal with pics also.since december all but 5 have bloomed..and it was a surprise since none had flowers or ids. So everything i have accomplished with my girls is from watching this channel and being patient..I am so thankful for you sharing all your knowledge and wonderful pictures !! You gave me so much..and all during this pandemic i had my girls to keep me busy and i joined the orchids society . So with my knowledge of your teaching im going to try the monkey faced Dracula's!! THANK YOU SO MUCH@

Thank you so much for sharing this with me. I get so emotional when I am able to help someone! I know my plants have gotten me through some really tough times and I am so glad yours have been able to do the same for you during this crisis! If there’s any way I can be of further assistance I am only to glad to help and I laughed out loud when you mentioned how many you now have! They certainty are addictive right!??! And how amazing that you are saving these plants from being thrown away! I wish you continued success and happiness growing your orchid babies!

@@freidafree810 What a wonderful story Freida. I’m all in favour of saving plants no matter the type but orchids all the more because I absolutely adore them. I get rather disappointed when stores want to just dispose of them and often wish they would have them on a table with a sign “help yourself to these plants” then people like us could save a whole lot more. I know it sounds a bit fanciful but I think they have a hide charging for almost dead plants. Anyway, enjoy your orchid journey and good luck with your plants.

How do you feed your orchids using the water method? Do you mix the fertilizer the same as in other methods? Do you leave the plant in the fertilized water or just leave for a short time and change to clean water?

hello there, often get to watch you as a faithful subscriber, so very pleased with this video, you have a wonderful encouraging voice.. Well I was just about to give up orchids: two main disasters last February, 7 phals died in a row because of a massive triple infestation and they had been big healthy plants with 2-3 stems + fat roots everywhere but I couldn’t save them; then the oncidiums started too so I thought ok my father was a perfect gardener and I’m not, I’ll go back to painting.. but one formerly strong phal (my favourite and oldest) perked up when in despair one night I plonked her root tips in water for a last chance option. Had never dared use water culture because of the great experts who would say that no, not possible it has to only bark. Anyway the poor phal struggled but one big fat root appeared! The oncidiums by that time were wrinkled with yellow leaves, black rhizomes, brownish roots etc. I was getting a bit sick of the whole affair, so in despair I decided they needed water and that was 3 wks ago (used the on/off method) and guess what new baby green roots are sprouting and new baby pseudobulbs too with nice new green leaves, can hardly believe my eyes. They were last chance cases too! but in fact they do like water after all. But you hit the nail on the head!! You can check the roots which means avoiding that sickening process of pulling out smelly mushy roots from the pot and having to cut them off, then you get to the leaf eating stage and then they die, yucks. So thank you 100 times, watching plants is 3/4 of the job and I am reverting back to my orchid pleasure .. Hope you’ll help us out with a video on a basic feeding regimen. yes, it’s June thank God and there’s a warm pleasant sunshine till 8 pm, waiting for your next video, :)))

Wow what a journey you’ve had! Thank you so much for sharing it with me! I am so very glad your orchids have turned a corner and are going to make it! How rewarding after all the struggles you went through! I could NEVER grow in bark! I tried for years and killed everything! I love the front row seat I have now to my orchids true state of health. No more worrying what’s going on in the pot. I can fix problems right at the beginning. Now my challenge is this, stop buying them so I can continue to give each one the personalized care they deserve! Thank you so much for commenting and for watching! Happy growing!

💚You are so right on everything!!!💚Orchids have their own individual spunk, lol😅. My very first phal (peaches) from three years ago hasn't bloomed yet😳tons of roots, air roots and leaves but NO SPIKES! All of my other 19 phals have spiked and bloomed in my care. I've noticed using Cal-Mag keeps my leaves stiff and green. I use 20 drops per gallon of filtered water. Looking forward to the Oncidium video.👍 I'm the one from Arizona🌵with the new Sharry Baby with wound up roots😳I just couldn't get any of her inner moss out without chopping roots so I just wrapped NZ spaghum moss around her and potted her in an airy orchid pot🤔... I'm puzzled. Btw...this was an amazing video. Thank you sooooo much!👍

Individual spunk! That's great! I have had one or two phals hold out on me too. Not sure why they won't bloom, healthy plant, same food and conditions as the others. Guess I just haven't figured them out yet! I remember unpotting my Sharry baby I was still finding moss for weeks it seems. It gets so tightly packed it's so difficult to get it all out. It takes time. Thanks so much for watching!

My question is … my water culture orchids would be doing great , out of the clear blue sky, leaves start turning yellow from the stem and moved to the tip and fell off…. Then all the leaves fell off… and the crown turned black BUT the roots are still beautiful and healthy Why? I am so heart broken Please help Thanks!

I have a few phals, I left one in the bark it came with, put one in leca(clay balls) and grew the other 4 in water. This was 3 years ago. The ones in water are still alive and flowering. The one in bark died. The one in leca is hanging on but I had to take it out of the leca as it's roots were rotting. It is now in water. I did find with one of the phals it didn't produce much new roots, so I got some of that plastic netting you buy oinions or oranges in and put it around the roots (loosly) I think just something touching the roots instead of them just hanging might encourage more root growth, any way it has produced more roots now.

I keep them in water in the winter I just make sure the level is not high. Phalaenopsis usually don't mind colder temperatures in the winter. Some of them actually require a cold snap to bloom. So far as long as I keep the water level low no root loss in winter. Thanks for watching!

I depotted them, cleaned them off. Let them dry 2 days. Two ??’s. Is the water, fertilized water always? And those that are doing good do you pour the fertilizer water over all the roots, and have a certain leave for each?? Or do you fill up each for a certain time, then drain them. Does the plants fall out of the glasses? I have about 50 orchids.

bryum hard tap water is very challenging, our last home I chose to use distilled water because I felt it was to hard. At our current home we have well water with a TDS of around 63 so I don't have that problem. I have noticed though that the complete lack of chlorine is allowing my algae to grow more vigorously, lol so it's a trade off.

Hello Danielle, I love your videos! Can I ask you how you behave with phals that loose all their roots? I have one bought recently that lost all roots and her leaves are still green but very floppy. My environment is dry all year round even in winter and now very hot. Should I put her in water? And what level as she has no roots? For the moment I have her in spagnum moss but nothing is happening. Sorry about all the questions, basically I just would like to know the level of water and if to put her straight in water or give her some dry days, even though I don't think it would be good in my environment, I am afraid she will die for good. Also how long do I have to wait before I see if it is working more or less? Pls help if you can, I'd really appreciate it. 💖💖💖

Danielle, so do you take them out of pots, keep them dry and only then introduce to water culture?
@daniellesorchidranch1591
@daniellesorchidranch1591 6 ай бұрын
I do slowly introduce them to water culture because they are used to a different growing environment. As with anything acclimating them to their new environment is the best way to prevent them from being shocked.

March 27, 2:18pm. I have a gifted orchid that gave beautiful flowers, probably overwatered it, and now it has no leaves and a very poor root system that I just two days ago started to try to revive. Can it possibly recover with no leaves? Or should I not bother?

Sometimes a change in the temperature can cause unexpected things in how your orchids behave. I am not using an AC this summer (we live in a condo building). I don't wanna let shared air enter our apartment because I have an immune-compromised child. Better safe than sorry! The warmer temperatures caused yellowing of the leaves in 2 of my orchids.

So i got a hybrid Phalenopisis (minature) she finished blooming and i removed thr root stem. I repotted her and she had two viable roots. So i soaked her base and live roots in a chooped up fresh aloe sprig. In 15 days, whe started a new flower stem. Then one other root died, now thr stalk is drying up 😢. I have one root and four VERY GREEN ,l slightly dehydrated. Leaves. Now i dont know what to do. I hava a pink grow light on her and i soaked her tip in water. Hopefully some toots will come quickly 🙏

Hi Danielle, thanks for your video. I learned a lot since I am a beginner to water culture. I actually use semi water culture that is 2 days in H20 5 days dry. Wanna know if you can use boiled water (cooled down before use) for phals & also does it have to do with the size of the container to be able to grow in water? Actually, I just started SWC a month ago and happy to say I saved one orchid that is almost dying just for a month. It’s now having new roots and a leaf is coming out. I was amazed to learn that decaying roots can be saved by removing only the rotten velamin. Thank you for the info & am happy with my orchids right now.

I'm so glad to hear you are having success with your orchids! Most people prefer SWC and I'm sure the plants are going to do well! I would imagine you could use room temperature water that had been boiled. Are you boiling it to remove something from it that you are afraid to give your plants? The size of the container is based on the size of the plant and what it's doing, you want to make sure there's plenty of room for air circulation. Also if there are new growths you may have to give the growth extra room because some growths if the hit the side of the vase will stop growing. Like I always say if you keep watching them you'll know what you need to adjust. Wishing you the best with your plants!

Danielle's Orchid Ranch Hi Danielle. I boiled my water to remove chemicals like chlorine that was added to it & salt since it’s tap and also use to filter it with Brita filter. It helps me a lot with your container advice & now I got an idea on what to do. Most important thing is to watch what my orchid is doing. Thanks a lot & for sure will always follow your channel.

Hey Danielle, Great video! I want to dip my toes into water culture (pun intended😉) on a few of my Phals., that are in media. I usually water them when the roots are dry. Should i do semi WC before going full WC to train the roots? Also I'm used to giving them feed all the time with my watering. Should I use the same fertilizer mix, at the same ratio, as I have in the past with WC? Thanks!

Starting with SWC sounds like a good choice! Some say you shouldn't fertilize transitioning orchids but honestly I do. I think as long as your feed level isn't really high you should be fine. Thanks for watching and I wish you every success!

I change my water once a week. The green in your water is most likely algae. Either change your water more frequently or use containers that are not clear. Algae need light to grow.

I have unfortunately broken a few flower spikes myself 😬 if there are still some nodes left on the spike, it might try to bloom from that. I would just leave it and see what the orchid does. If it turns brown and dies back, you’ll know that that spike is not going to bloom.

Lizette Alfaro there are several reasons a Phalaenopsis won’t bloom. Could be not enough light. Could be it needs to be repotted because the media it’s growing in is old. With Phals many need a cooling off period to induce blooms. A period of time when the night time temperatures drop below it’s normal day time temperatures. It also could be a nutrient deficiency. I added seaweed to my fertilizer routine over a year ago and a few that had not spiked for a while responded and spiked.
