When your phalaenopsis losses her roots you can use several methods depending on the severity of root loss. Her are a few that have worked for me. (And please don’t use ice to water your orchid, unless burning orchid roots appeals to you)

I actually can’t express how much I appreciate the ice cube rant! Most definitely NOT overkill!! As a matter of fact, it is so incredibly helpful that you showed what exactly happens to the roots when you torture them with ice cubes!!! A+ + for this awesomely informative and encouraging video!

Oh, I could hug you for showing your microfiber cloth rescue method, which I have needed for a while. Your orchid channel is on my short-list to follow. My heart swelled as you talked about saving your phals (4:36 to 5:38)! Watching your video and rewinding parts of it has helped me better understand the water-culture method. I have several phals that will be taken out of mush tomorrow morning and re-established in water-culture glasses, thanks to you. As to using ice cubes to water orchids, my mind fumes thinking of it. I've told people ice do not water orchids in the tropics; putting ice cubes on orchids simply isn't normal. Never think your videos are not appreciated and thank you from Georgia, USA! Goodnight!

GREAT video, thank you. I learned so much about how to take care of my own phalaenopsis buddies. All your comments about ice cubes made me laugh. Yeah people tell me all the time about how they water their orchids with ice cubes like that. I never follow their advice either because it doesn't seem like a tropical plant would like ice water. Now I know for sure after seeing this video of yours. Cheers. Also, I love your New York accent.

👌👌Excellent info that’s vital for growing saving orchids..u get to the point n cover so much more than other YT Orchid Channels..👏👏👏thAnk u for all the helpful tips. 👀and for addressing the ICE cube dilemma that was started by the Orchid Grower wholesaler with sole intention of u buying more Orchids..when the ice cube shocks ur plant..killing orchid..eventually. So u have to throw out & buy more..(read the info tag when u buy one -) exactly what it says. I even emailed the mfg that the ice cube method was bad idea etc etc They r prob one of the largest wholesale orchid growers in US..& sell to every retailer. Just thought I’d pass this on..been growing orchids for many years. 🌸🌺🌼

Hi Deanna, Ugh ice! I’ve killed many orchids over the years with ice. My addiction started when I looked up ice and orchids. I then began to just try to keep my orchids living. I was down to one and it was alive. One day it had 1 flower! Omg! I got bit hard. I still have that orchid today. But most of my orchids thrive. I’ve put them in hospital many times. I use a glass with a bit of water. I make sure the orchid roots don’t touch. Put it in a ziplock and leave it where it was growing. My case window sills. They grow nice roots and leaves and eventually get repotted. ❤️

Hello Danielle, and thank you so much for this video! I got Phalaenopsis like three month ago and it was blooming and all went well like for two months and now the flowers are gone and leaves started to turn yellow and the plant is not in a good condition and I have realised it had some root problems and so I went on a rescue mission and went through loads of videos, but I did not find an answer what is wrong with my roots, and there were many videos on roots issues but non of them was fitting on what was happening to my orchid, BUT! then I found this treasure and found out, that my problem is, that the plant was watered with ice cubes! the roots are all good down in the soil, but burned on the top and that is from those ice cubes! So now I know... so really BIG thank you for this video which helped me to understand very well what is going on! Have a nice day and please continue doing these videos, they are awesome! XX

Orchids have been one of my favorite flowers most my life. I actually probably saved my local grocery stores display of orchids by talking to the flower centers manager about the ice cude thing when I was young. Kind of just used the logic of why would a tropical plant want ice cudes. I have horrible polin allergies and recently found out im not allergic to the polin of many plants that grow off trees, including orchids. Finding this out I immediately adopted the orchid my mom was given and was killing. the phal has jumped back to health really fast and I plan to repot it after it's current bloom since it's potting media is chips a sphagman and looks to be about 2 years old.

You are absolutely right about ice cubes killing the roots. Even though I'm a beginner w/orchids (expert on other plants), I had this experience of killing an orchids roots using ice cubes and when I saw those "burns" on the tops of my roots, I knew it was no longer a good idea to continue using ice cubes. To be honest, it never made good sense to me to use ice in the first place having years of experience growing other types of plants but when you try something new, you tend to take advice from people that seem to know what they're talking about. But anywho, lol, thank you for showing us orchid newbies that we CAN bring an orchid back to life without any or very little roots using water culture. God bless you!😇

I really enjoyed your video. I have a distressed phalaenopsis orchid that is sad. Three leaves left, and they are softening. There are only two green roots. The remaining structure of roots look dead and dried up. I had it planted or lying on top of store bought orchid planting mix, which is bark , lots of mixed up bark. I usually can get two blooming seasons from an orchid, but not this one. So I had never used ice cubes. The way you showed all of your orchids that are recovering and what to do exactly, helped me. So I placed the orchid in a jar with a decent amount of water to cover the brown dried up roots just clearing the two green somewhat healthy roots., leaving them in the air. Hope this helps it recover. We shall see. Thanks again.

Hi, I recently bought a beautiful red flower phaleanopsis from a nursery where I always buy my orchid’s cause they sell good quality plants but there’s always a first time 😕unfortunately the one I picked stared to show a yellow leaf by the middle of the stem a week later that I purchased it so that was weird to me, so I checked and there it was stem rot that was covered by the leaf and I didn’t notice.. since I go there every week hopefully they will replace it for a healthy orchid, i don’t know what they are going to say, I haven’t even watered cause it was well hydrated and medium as well when I bought it,and I always make sure that the roots dry to water them.. I’ll keep my fingers that they will replace it, this means that even nurseries can make mistakes when watering so always inspect carefully the plant before buying specially if it is from a reputable nursery

Your 2 year old orchid, see that split leaf? She _needs_ Calcium (5% per/1 qtr. water). Purple stems & leaves _need_ Magnesium! (Mag = 1/8 tsp Epsom salts, per 1 qtr. water) Fast as you can! Please, make her as happy as possible. You'll see a total positive, difference when you start adding them both, every time you fertilize. 10 years phalaenopsis growing experience speaking here. One more thing: that orchid that's not doing so very well. The one in water culture, that smelled of pesticide? Try her in moss perhaps? I've learned not all orchids, do well in water culture. You might know this already? If not giver a try? You may be surprised? 🌼 If we all stick together, we only help our orchids. I Just wanted to help you, if I could. I am rescuing an orchid with only air roots left, I suppose it matters not after researching and finding no information. But it does have several (maybe 10) air roots. A few are not looking great, it has two leaves remaining but will likely lose the bottom leaf as the dehydration was so several, half the leaf is not rehydrating and is turning dark brown/green and is wrinkled and papery. However it is looking my better soaking in diluted black tea half the day and dry the other half. I intend to scavenge the medium from my trees here. It been less than a week, I will not move to medium until a see some type of growth.

In mexico we are experiencing this problem with orchids being grow on sponges, foams and coco plugs and when the time comes when the flower buds open they just cram them with bark in a clear pot them when you bring them home you water them like you would for your climate not to mention the foam or plug dries super slow and the bark is bone dry by the week mark so I have nasty root for and now I'm paranoid and wanting to repot everything.

I sometimes think that when an orchid is in such sad shape the roots that are no longer there were the ones that hydrated the leaves that are all wrinkled. And the reason it's growing new Roots is to hydrate the new Leaf. That's just a thought not sure how true that is but that's what I wonder about. It seems like those wrinkled leaves never plump up.... if the roots that died were the ones that supported the shriveled leaves

I recently purchased a mini phelaenopsis, at most 8 inches tall. It was in the clearance section at my local grocery, and it was just so cute. I've had it for a couple weeks and it's still in bloom but recent;y the blooms have started to shrivel. After some research, I took immediate action to see what the roots looked like. They were ALL dead, save HALF of one root. I noticed that a lot of the roots were previously cut, and the base was enclosed in some kind of thick sponge, and it was just awful. I mean there was just slime and all the roots were hollow. I snipped off all the roots, save that little half of root, and then I dabbed some peroxide on it. I'm keeping the poor thing in a plastic container just to dry out now. Should I keep it in water?

I want my orchids to grow roots and I am at a loss I’ve watched hundreds of videos and feel terrible. I have a huge tattoo of orchid it was my first large tattoo at 18 cause I’ve loved them so much I am 32 now and got grow lights and picked up orchids from a local grocery store and went to repotme and picked up EVERYTHING i needed and spent hundreds of dollars and still am failing I thought I was doing good until I started noticing yellowing leaves that I have 0 idea why. I have one that the roots are blah and had a spike no flowers but had a keiki at my local grocery store and I grabbed it right up and have been trying to let it stay on longer but have noticed the babies root looks like it’s drying out so I’m gonna beg to cut it and put it in a pot I think it’s got 4 leaves and one 2 in root and another that did have bright green end but now that is gone. It’s hard cause if you look up why is (blank) happening you’ll get over watering or under watering like what!? How do you know which!

It seems to me that another major reason to not use ice cubes is that there isn’t enough water to completely hydrate the roots all the way down. As the cubes melt there isn’t that much water so only the top part of the media gets watered and that’s why the top parts of the roots rot.

I've watched Phal pal's (people who love Phal's in general), from Russia, who cut the stem right after the top part has roots like yours, and they survive. Not saying that'll work for everyone else. Just wanted to let you know!

Orchids have alwase been a favorite flower of mine but i only recently got my first one since i found out im not alergic to the polin of plants that grow off trees(forgot the word). A brand of orchids that I know are sold by some grocerie stores tells the growers to do this it seems to be a method of planned "obsolescence" they leave these instructions on thier orchids so you kill the root system and most people who are inexperienced think oh it's because the flowers are gone. since it's a slow killer it looks like it starts going down hill after the bloom fades. Mine was bought as a gift for my mom but i watered it after i sall my mom puting ice cudes on a tropical plant (she eventualy gave it to me for the Above reason and since she has a rotten thumb for house plants). it has these marks on them the roots. They arnt to bad but it was quite young when I got it, still is maybe 2 years old based on the clipped spike ends I know the bloom it had with my mom was a double spike and it only has the ends from those 2 spikes. The summer heat we had unexpectedly nearly killed it (killed a smaller one my mom had before she gave this one to me) and my mom tried to get me to put ice cude on it again the phal bounced back now and after this bloom I'm going to repot it in a similar median to what it's in now (chips and a little less sphagman moss)

I always feel bad for the orchids in the big box stores or grocery stores, they always suffer from inexperienced idiots thinking they’re doing the right thing by watering with ice cubes or something else wrong. I’m starting to see just add ice brand phalaenopsis hybrids in my area which is bad news for me even though I quit growing orchids five years ago. Why this is bad is that it spreads more misinformation basically watering with ice cubes.

I just told someone the other day in the store not to use the ice cubes on her orchids instead she could soak it in a bowl of water for twenty minutes along with a little bit of fertilizer or put a bowl underneath her Orchid and water it but not to let and Ice Cube sit on its roots it's a tropical plant and to think the company sells there orchids telling people to do that. I think the reason they get away with that is a lot of people throw their Orchid away after a quits blooming so they don't have to worry about the long-term consequences of putting an ice cube on the tropical plant. I watched the KZbin video the other day where someone gives advice on every plan where someone gives advice on every plan under where someone gives advice on every plan under the sun. He then proceeded to tell people if they were going to save their caladiums from one year to the next they could keep them in that pot to cut all the leaves off or take them out of the pot let them get their leaves in their Roots cut off and then pack them away after they dry out. Caladiums have a lot of energy stored in their leaves and if you want to save them for the next year you lay them down in the driveway let them dry out let them suck all the nutrients from the leaves back into the little bulb or whatever you want to call it. I've had good success with letting that happen and also doing the same for an amaryllis. Take it out of the pot lay it on the driveway and let all that nourishment in the leaves at the end of summer go back into the bulb. By the way Danielle I just started my own KZbin channel I would appreciate you going I'm checking it out and giving me some advice. It's just a dumb little video about my 30 orchids that are in my bay window. I've just been collecting them since November there phalaenopsis and to find my KZbin channel I couldn't change the name at least I couldn't figure out how to do it on my cell phone... So go to Kathleen Murphy orchids on KZbin or Kathleen Murphy and put the word coleus beside my name or the word philodendron my name and you will find my channel. I'd appreciate any thoughts or comments you can make ways to improve Etc. I think you're the third Orchid Channel I started to watch the first was Jacqueline's orchids and Jacqueline spell j a c o o l y n because it's a combination of Caroline and Jack the husband and wife... And Rick of Rick's orchids on KZbin. Caroline got me addicted to orchids Rick told me how things work and how to fertilize and you taught me a lot about orchids and I did try a couple orchids in water culture and I was successful with one and two other ones didn't like it at all. In fact I was ready to have them all in water. I think what I did wrong with the one was I changed all of its water completely and I think I might have put some of the fertilized water instead of plain water in the big Brandi sniffer and algae started to grow I guess because the fertilizer and the Orchid started to go downhill. I just found two extremely interesting orchids that I'm going to video both are phalaenopsis both have huge blooms on them and they've trained the one with one stem to hang down sort of like a waterfall on a wire frame and the other one they made to trellises with bamboo Stakes so it's like a u shape and they've trained these blooms to fall down along the trellis but the blooms are huge almost twice as big as the other ones. Thanks so much Danielle and anyone else that can come and subscribe and click like and make some comments thank you so much

I saw that video and totally cringed when she said that too, I’m assuming it works for her because it’s so hot in FL that it melts it much faster than it does in our cold areas. Still she lives in in a place with perfect humidity and weather for them why not just give them a nice drink from regular water.

I made the mistake of putting all the leftover roots fully underwater and lost the maiming roots due to rot. However “she is still alive. I was heartbroken that I hurt her so and was wondering what to do. Then I ran across this video💜 Going to wrap a small piece of microfiber cloth end around the higher new “nobs” leave the end cloth in water and let her longest root just touch the water...I hope she begins to sprout new roots soon.

I have a similar Orchid to the one at about 14 minutes that you said the flowers rehydrated. When I turn the air conditioning on that one tree bloomed so now it's staying inside not going outside till it quits blooming. But some of its flowers drooped and I have to step up my watering now that the sun's different in the humidifiers not on the air conditioners on. So it needed water badly and the flowers plumped up wonder if it's in the genes

Do you do this same method for other orchids brought from big box stores? I brought some cattleya and they’re planted in bark chips and one of them appears to be planted in some kind of moss or rock wool possibly and they’re dehydrated. I ran some lukewarm water over the roots to work on rehydrating them before transferring them into new potting medium.

Pauline James it’s a marketing strategy, Orchids should not be given frozen water. Give them the same amount of water but make it regular temperature water not ice cubes and your plant will do better! Ice will eventually kill the roots which will kill the orchid.

Linda RUDYK there can be many reasons. Among them are low humidity or irregular watering but sometimes they just do. If it's on more then one of your plants try raising humidity and put them on schedule for watering and see if it improves.
