I purchased a specific variety of Raspberry called Raspberry Shortcake. They're ideal for containers and small gardens as they only get 2 ft tall and have no thorns. They are also very disease resistant. I'm planning on converting 3 raised beds to perennial beds so I'll fill one of these beds with the raspberries this fall. I'm a fan of watching gardening how to videos and I watch a lot of them!!! Your videos are constantly hitting the 9 out of 10 and yes some of them are a 10. Here in the USA we have Spring, Summer and Autumn bearing varieties....Thorns and Thorn-less...Black, Red, Yellow and White (peachy colored). There is a vast difference in taste and quality of berry so it takes a while to pin down the variety that you love and performs the way you want.

Hello, is your advice to cut canes down after planting applicable to both summer fruiting and autumn fruiting varieties? Are there any exceptions when it is better to leave existing stems there?
@GrowVeg Жыл бұрын
Yes, the cutting back of canes immediately after planting refers to both types of raspberries. However, if you bought summer-fruiting raspberries as full-length canes, then don't prune those as you will lose fruit for that first year.

@GrowVeg4 жыл бұрын
They will all appreciate plenty of well-rotted organic matter added to the soil, like most plants, to boost nutrients within the soil and general soil structure. This can be added in late winter/early spring before plants start into growth. Blueberries prefer an acidic soil, so if your soil isn't naturally acidic then these bushes will need treating separately to lower the pH of the soil. But if the blueberries are already doing well then obviously you've the right soil already and needn't worry.

My well established red summer raspberry rows do well every year except when we get too many wet days at fruiting time. I also have autumn varieties Polka & Sungold (yellow). The Polka are not as high yielding as hoped for but do give big tasty fruit. The Sungold are a mystery - the first year after planting the fruit was small & sparse (perhaps expected) but last year after again cutting right down in February, the canes grew as expected (plenty of leaf) but produced nil fruit all year, so this year am gonna experiment: I cut down all the thin canes early January & left plenty of stronger canes & am gonna see if the plants have "reverted" to summer fruiting - if that is unsuccessful then they have to go !

How can one identify whether their raspberries are summer or autumn bearing? I have canes that I've propagated from dug roots, and they have a small number of berries on their new growth.
@GrowVeg2 жыл бұрын
The best way to identify what you have is to notice when they fruit. Summer-fruiting types tend to fruit early to mid summer, while autumn fruiting varieties are much later - from late summer and into autumn. Autumn fruiting raspberries produce fruit on the same year's growth - so notice whether this is the case or whether the fruits are coming on stems that started growing last season.

Thanks for the video very informative. I need to put some material over my lettace and raspberries to protect them from the birds and bugs. Do you have any videos which show the best way to do this?
@GrowVeg2 жыл бұрын
I don't I'm afraid. Fir raspberries you could just drape netting over the raspberries to keep the birds off - but peg down the bottom to stop them getting in. Bugs more generally can be kept off plants by setting up simple bamboo cane supports - push them into the ground then pop an old plastic bottle over the top of the cane to stop the cover from ripping. Then drape the insect mesh over and secure at the sides so it's taut.
@ssmith26082 жыл бұрын
@@GrowVeg it probably seems like a really straight forward thing that you wouldn't need to demonstrate but I know experienced gardeners will know hacks that us beginners wouldn't think of. 😊 I'll give it a go thanks for the advice. Just worried about trying to secure it so the bugs don't get in and safe from wind. Without securing it too much, so I can still water the container. 🤔

I dont understand how to Make the trellis/stands for raspberries or when? Can I just use sticks? Do i do it when I plant or after they have grown a particular height??
@GrowVeg2 жыл бұрын
It is easier to put in the supports before planting, that way you won’t disturb the plants later on. All it is is basically a post at either end of the row, firmly set into the ground, to which you attach horizontal wires between them. You can then tie in the raspberry canes to these wires. Use a thick gauge wire and secure to the post with vine eye screws.
@Peter-the-Angry2 жыл бұрын

Always find your videos helpful, although for complete novices like myself - did you assume people would already know to use bird netting to protect their berries, or just forget to mention this? Is netting vital?
@GrowVeg4 жыл бұрын
Netting isn't vital - you may get a few berries pecked off, but the majority should be just fine. But sometimes the birds can get ahead of you and strike before you've had a pick. I'd maybe suggest a wait and see tactic - see if they come decimate your crop and if you only lose a few, you may well do without netting. Otherwise netting will protect more of your abundance for you to pick.

@GrowVeg3 жыл бұрын
When you cut back your raspberries depends on whether it is summer-fruiting or autumn-fruiting. If you're unsure, wait till the end of the winter to cut back the old canes (the ones that have fruited). You cut them right back to ground/soil level. The new canes are then secured in place - these will bear the fruit for the following season.

Yes indeed. Autumn varieties are a lot 'better behaved' than summer raspberries, which are a lot more vigorous. So you may want to choose an autumn variety if this worries you. But the suckers are quite easy to dig up and pull out/free.

Ok, I need a troubleshooting video. Lol. I have ever bearing thornless, raspberries. I had them at my other place and they grew prolifically without any real care from me. I took some with me when I moved about 2 hours away to a new place. I planted them in the same direction, along a fence that gets all the morning sun and most of the midday sun, but it's shaded in the evening, same as my other place. Problem is, the first year canes grow beautiful and lush, then die back in the winter. No berries every year. I live in the far north in Canada, but this newer place is milder than my previous one. I grew my raspberries in zone 2 with no issues, and now I'm in a zone 4ish. First, I'm wondering if it's the placement. I tried to replicate the direction, etc., but this yard slopes down quite heavily, and the raspberries(were) in the bottom of the yard, where the water drains out and I thought they would like the extra water that would run off. I had planted in a good amount of compost as my soil is clay here. Mulched with wood chips. I think maybe the winters are too icy in the corner where they are? Killing off the new canes? My previous place was sandy with amended soil. Drainage was better? These don't seem to have issues with wet feet even in this clay yard. Anyway, I moved them just yesterday to my old 'pea trench' further up in my yard, to see if they would produce next year. I've never had any issues with raspberries like this, so any input would be great!!
@GrowVeg5 ай бұрын
It could potentially be that they struggled in the very wet conditions, or that this exacerbated the chill when it turns cold. Worth relocating them to see if this makes a difference for sure. It sounds like you’re doing all you can to encourage them along and give them the best conditions.

It depends on whether they are summer or autumn-fruiting varieties. If you can check that will help the variety you can then determine which they are. Summer-fruiting types fruit on one-year-old canes, so are best left un-pruned as they should fruit next season. Otherwise cut them back to within about 25cm of the ground after planting. The following year's fruits are all produced on new canes. So there is no point keeping the old canes there, as they won't fruit. Removing them allows light and air to get at the new canes, so they grow stronger and then hopefully produce a bigger crop.

The summer-fruiting raspberries will produce new canes as the older ones are fruiting. These can then be tied in while the fruited canes are cut back. The autumn-fruiting raspberries won't produce new canes until next spring, so if there are no new canes after fruiting, then this will be the autumn-fruiting variety.

@GrowVeg2 жыл бұрын
It could be a number of issues. They do prefer a soil ever so slightly acidic (6.5-6.7 pH), so perhaps check this. Make sure they are indeed getting enough water, but it sounds like they probably are. You may find that you can help canes to flower and fruit by applying a high potassium organic fertiliser in early spring.

@GrowVeg3 жыл бұрын
Look closely. Do some of the canes have old fruits on/look a bit thicker and browner than the other canes, which would be softer and greener and 'fresher'. If so, cut back the older canes right to ground level, leaving the younger canes as they are - which will provide this year's fruits.

Enjoy your video but do you have any advise to eliminate cane blight from a raspberry bed? Thank you for any suggestions.
@GrowVeg7 жыл бұрын
The best thing to do if you have cane blight is cut out and throw away the affected canes, cutting right back to below soil level if you can. Disinfect your pruners/secateurs between each cut. If the disease returns you may need to start again, in a fresh piece of ground well away from the last place you grew them. The canes will need to be well spaced to allow plenty of air to circulate, and ensure you mulch plants to keep the soil from drying out.

My raspberries are very thick should I take off the tops to allow my light/air into the bushes itself?
@GrowVeg7 ай бұрын
No, I would only cut them back once they have fruited.

Hi Ben, I have a new summer raspberry plant it's about 5ft now, I know it won't fruit till next year but what do I have to do for over winter, leave it or cut it back, first time growing one, thanks ..
@GrowVeg5 ай бұрын
If the summer raspberry doesn't fruit later this summer, then just leave the canes as they are. I would apply a mulch of well-rotted organic matter in late winter/early spring as things stir back into life. If it does fruit, then prune the fruited canes only back down to ground level.

hmmm just built a raised bed its only about 8ftx4ft SE facing, I was thinking of putting in raspberries (polka) and then some other fruits (finishing with strawbs to the front to overhang, is this doable as a square foot gardening method?
@GrowVeg4 жыл бұрын
Yes absolutely, you could plant your raspberries to the correct spacing and then pop in some strawberries to the front to dangle down. Strawberries grow quite well in dappled shade, so this should be fine.

@@GrowVeg thx for the reply, slight change of plan I am going to go with a compact blackberry bush at the back and train it on a wire trellis. strawbs still going in though

How often and how much water?
@GrowVeg6 жыл бұрын
Water the canes in dry weather during the first year. It's hard to give a guide as to how much, because it depends on soil type and weather, but generally aim to really soak the ground so you only have to water one every week or two in dry weather.
@newphilmz36056 жыл бұрын
I was watering often, more than once a week, but my leaves and fruit kept drying up. I moved them more into a half shaded area, and I think they're doing better. Also, l bought them pre-planted and all the canes are bunched in the middle, should I separate them? Or is it too late to stress them out?

Since i was a child, we've been keeping raspberry canes throughout the years. We've only just cut off the dead canes and removed weeds. We've also rarely watered them and now we've got a spot with +40 canes. Can I do anything to help them spread out more? Or help them produce a greater yield?
@GrowVeg3 жыл бұрын
You could try digging some of the canes up to replant elsewhere. This should help them to spread. Keep canes mulched to help feed them - this should encourage healthier, stronger plants with more fruits.

I'm not sure about the leaves - but possibly in a health food shop as tea bags? The plants themselves can be bought from any online gardening supplier - they are widely available.

I saw that you have netting over the whole area. Is that to protect from birds?
@GrowVeg7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the netting is there to keep the birds from snaffling the berries.
@ArtemKolesnikov19834 жыл бұрын
@@GrowVeg I think this is not necessary. Usually birds spoil some berries and this can cause resentment if you have only a few raspberry bushes. If you have more than 10 raspberry bushes, then it makes no sense to protect raspberries from birds. The situation is similar with strawberries: birds peck the largest (and tastiest) berries and this can be very annoying when you have several bushes. If you plant more than 50 plants, then there is enough berries for everyone - for birds and humans. Hello from Russia!

Get them in now Cecilia. Late summer/autumn is a great time to plant them and they can send out fresh roots before winter, helping them establish.

Is it fine to eat a raspberry if it’s been in a fridge for 5-6 days?
@GrowVeg3 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely. Just be guided by how it looks - usually it's no longer good to eat when it starts to turn a little mouldy. If it's still firm and there's no sign of mould - they're good to eat.

Hi, I took over a previous owners garden which had uncared for raspberries. I had no idea what season berries they were so took the whole plot including g raspberries to the floor. This year I have a wonderfully lush bushy growth but no crop. So do I assume these are Autumn fruiting or will these crop next summer? If summer, do the leaves due back and regrow? True novice with fruit growing. Thank you.
@GrowVeg3 жыл бұрын
Hi Gaynor. If the canes haven't fruited, then it sounds like you have summer-fruiting raspberries. Just leave them as they are and hopefully they'll fruit next season. The leaves and everything will die back over winter to leave bare canes.

Any tips about growing them in containers?
@GrowVeg6 жыл бұрын
Raspberries in containers need to be planted in a soil-based potting soil, which will better support the plants over a longer period. You will need to feed them periodically during the growing season. And, of course, you will need to keep them watered as they will dry out much quicker and raspberries like cool, moist soil.

It's my first time growing raspberries and this video has really helped so thank you! I have a question - I have 3 types of raspberries to plant; All Gold, Glen Ample and Polka. Is it ok to plant them together in the same area? Or will this impeded their growth/fruiting? Thanks!
@GrowVeg3 жыл бұрын
You could grow them together as I think these are all autumn-fruiting raspberries, so are pruned at the same time - cut back after fruiting. However, my only concern is that one variety may come to dominate the others if grown in the same area - that's my only real concern. But in theory they are all similar in how they grow, so you could give it a try if you don't mind this possibility.

Can I grow a raspberry in a container?

Yes, but the container will need to be reasonably big to accommodate the roots - probably at least 14in/35cm in diameter and depth.

What can i do about leaf spot? My plants have it bad! They just fruited this summer for the first time. 2 year old canes. Thank you
@GrowVeg7 жыл бұрын
Most diseases of raspberries, including rust and cane spot, can be controlled by cutting out and removing affected canes when the symptoms appear. You will also need to rake up and remove fallen leaves. Mild weather and high humidity are often the cause, so make sure you don't overcrowd the canes - cut out any excess so there is plenty of light and air.

I think our raspberries are growing in less nutritious soil, some leaves go quite yellow/green. Dig them up this winter and place lots of compost before re-planting?

They do need good light levels and need to be properly spaced to ensure the best results. Also, make sure to top up organic mulches around plants late in the winter, to ensure the soil is properly fed.

My rasberry plant lasted thru the winter and surprisingly grew huge this summer. However we have has some nice weather here in jersry for the past week. And still I haven't seen a raspberry as yet. Should I be worried?
@GrowVeg5 жыл бұрын
Some raspberries fruit on the previous year's canes - so if the canes are only a year old then you will have to wait until next season. Or it could just be that they are a late-fruiting variety, in which case they may flower soon, ready to fruit later in the summer.
