GROWING SOUTHERN PEAS, OR COWPEAS IN RAISED BEDS

Add some wild growing southern peas in your raised beds! Also known as cowpeas or field peas, this is a vegetable that can feed your whole family. Save seeds for next season, or for eating as needed. I have enjoyed growing these, they protect garden soil in the summer as a cover crop, and they are a food source. They also have a low occurrence of pest pressures, and are highly productive. They bring in the biodiversity with carpenter bees, wasps, butterflies, dragonflies, and more.

hello from 5b Missoula MT!!! I've never grown cowpeas before, but I'm a renter trying to pack as much food as I can into my garden. Awesome!! I have been planting them recently and one issue has been pillbugs or ants nibbling/destroying them as they germinate. I have taken to check them regularly and apply diatomaceous earth as a deterrent to these pests. Once the peas have a second set of leaves, they should be able to get established.

So I am looking for a vining cowpea, do you think the red ripper would grow up a bean trellis, I really need it to grow more than 6 feet so it can clear the fence and get more light though?

The issue I am having is the pods don't have that many seeds in them. The pod is nice and long but only 2 or 3 seeds in each pod.

I'm not sure what the answer is, but it could point to poor pollination. They are self pollinating, but will be aided by pollinators or a gentle tap of the flowers. I hope they'll continue to develop for you as they often have a long production window.

Yes absolutely. I might blanch fresh peas prior to freezing, but I haven't actually done it before.
