Encontrei :-).
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 4 жыл бұрын

You're right, George. You simply have to experience, first hand, the taste of a fresh picked heirloom tomato to really know how wonderful they can be. "Coração de Boi" has its known here, its a wonderful and tasty variety. I plant it every year.

Is there an easy way of getting seeds for these ugly tomatoes, within the EU? I am spoiled because I was born and raised in Portugal, but I don’t live there anymore and most store bought tomatoes around here are tasteless.

Hello, how can I find old variety or tomatoes, thanks
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 4 жыл бұрын
They are several vendors online that specialize in selling seeds of heirloom varieties. In Europe, one of the biggest ones, that I use sometimes is Graines Baumaux (huge online catalog although a bit expensive). If you search, you probably will find a similar vendor in your area. Another option is joining a forum (like Growing Fruits) and exchanging or buying seeds from other members.

I grow lots of tomatoes every year. As I eat my first tomato sandwich, on home made bread with lots of mayonnaise and salt, I think that all the work was worth it for this one sandwich. But I smile thinking how many more are coming as a bonus. thanks for a very enjoyable and informative video.

Que si tengo preguntas?? Muchas, muchas.

Back in the 80's, we had homegrown tomatos that were oblongish and chicken egg sized. They were sweet, juicy, and tasted like a real sweet fruit you can eat off the vine. Any idea what that variety could have been? We are at zone 8a in vancouver canada.

Great video. I spent all weekend getting my garden prepared and planting tomatoes. I got kind of a late start this year. I'm about 3 weeks late but it just warmed up last week into the 80's during the day so it's probably for the best. I have a lot of old heirloom varieties I like to grow every year and usually try a few new ones each year too,and there's even a couple hybrid varieties that I like to plant each year too. Good luck with your tomatoes this year @JSacadura

Good warning at the end, when december comes, I feel so sad to have to buy tomatoes again ! I usually sow indoor in my office (ADSL box is a good heat mat!) in January, I just finished planting mine as I don't think we will get night below 5C anymore.I have some planted in ground in the (tiny) greenhouse, in Nov they mostly vegetated until Mar, but now reaching the top, but no crop yet. I use old varieties mostly, either seeds I collected or bought from trusted producers. I can't wait until my plants are producing ! I don't trim them that severely but you are probably right, diseases are a problem, and I don't have that much space for rotations ... Thanks again for a very informative video. BTW I also tried those yellow/indigo ones last year, they are pretty but disapointing taste wise, so didn't sow them again this year :-)

Hi, Daniel. Thanks for the comment. I don't spray my tomatoes. If I don't prune them that way, with all the humidity we have over here, the fungus don't let me eat a single one. We tried those varieties last year for the novelty. They look pretty in a salad, but you are right, they don't have the taste of the older ones. Take care.

Cordialmente.Jorge.--
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 4 жыл бұрын
Hola, Jorge.

Sorry, Frank. A good friend sends me those seeds from time to time from were he lives (in Algarve). I have no idea if they appear in any seed catalog online (but they are several vendors with several, very good, heirloom varieties, that are probably very similar in taste). The name of each variety is mentioned in the video (from min. 15.30 to 16.30)

Thank you so much for sharing, very informative and complete video. I have a question but not related to this video but to fruits. I am in the process of buying my first fruit tree, Redhaven Peach, do you happen to have a video or tips for this? Or can you do a future one? Much appreciated 😊

Hi, Alfred. Hi had a Redhaven Peach Tree but, unfortunately, I had to regraft the tree. It had a high chill requirement. Much more than I have over here, so it was rare the year it gave me a single peach. But, if you are in a colder zone, it may be different for you. Its a nice peach. I will be doing a video on Chill Requirements and have another planed on Caring for Peach Trees. I just have to find the time...

Sounds great! Its similar around here. In hotter locations, like Tom is saying, you really have to put them in the ground much earlier or they will be burned (even here in some years with hot spring days they suffer a bit).
