Hey bruv mush love for the vid. I got a lil tip i have learned as well. So if you can get some type of stiff box (i use a Styrofoam cooler) and after adding spawn and seal, pack into roughly a block shape. Then place spawn bulk blocks into container making sure to wedge them in order to semi-compress into the perfect shaped block. i can fit 4 perfectly inside a 12"x 18" container. the blocks come out so perfect they look like bricks lol. I found this helps with that pocket issue between the bag and substrate. Try it! it's the best thing if you have Ocd with that kind of stuff like me and want perfect blocks everytime. Also Species of mushrooms like this will thank you immensely. Mushlove Shroomie

The thing with mold is kinda right, and what you did surely helps - but you could also up the FAE as mold needs stagnant air and/or higher temps. Higher FAE lowers the temperature and shouldn't let it stick. I'll try your method in a monotub vs humidity 3-4 x 15mins a day with a fan on. Also a shotgun fruiting chamber might help as air is exchanged a little bit everywhere. You can add a humidifier to compensate when needed, or spray by hand, or lay some perlite on the ground under the blocks (i sterilise it before using it so it hydrates, which also allows me to reuse it). If the tub has a sealed lid, you could even cover the holes with micropore, put it outside and let the wind do the thing

It's also way easier to clean a tub or two, than it is to clean an entire fruiting chamber between flushes or grows. Lots of ways to achieve victory, but I'm liking the tub setups for small grows.

They're actually fairly easy if you get a good strain. The "wild" strain from Mycelium Emporium is pretty user friendly.

very cool. I am just launching into this with a kit of Lion's Mane and Pink Oyster. I am going to use these as spawn in an aspen shaving or straw substrate in buckets, to increase the yield. I have also some Elm Oyster liquid culture which I want to multiply up into 2 cups of LC, then from there make some jars of grain spawn to inoculate a couple buckets in turn. These are my goals for wintertime initiation into this fascinating world. After these projects, I plan to try my hand at Turkey Tail, Reishi, and Wine Cap, as well as learning to work with inoculating my own grow bags. I am already familiar with making tinctures and concentrates, as well as being a bit of a foodie in the kitchen. So, this will be fun.

Have you looked at Paul Stamets turkey tail mycelium benefits, just like lions mane, the mycelium is just as powerful if not more so. So try make tinctures of those popcorn spots

Do you ever cold water dunk for 12 hrs and/or give a resting period between flushes? I'm growing a very energetic strain of turkey tail and red reishi among others. have some 6 lb blocks started colonizing 5-17-22. I don't dunk or use a resting period with Turkey Tail or Reishi, I just keep them in fruiting conditions and let them do their thing. For Reishi, I don't do the slits, I just cut the top of the bag off. I demonstrate in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5ucg3Wbf5WDfqc

You kinda have to play it by ear. Usually the will fruit back out the same slits, but sometimes the slits will stall and they will push hard against the plastic in other areas. If that happens I cut a couple more slits.

I prefer to top fruit Reishi. I have videos on my channel documenting my Reishi grow TEK. Chicken of the Woods are difficult and not commonly cultivated indoors. You'll have better luck shallowly burying your COW blocks outdoors.

Wild strain from ME. For fruiting blocks, start with 2 lbs. of dry pellets and a pinch of gypsum, add equal displacement as your 2 lbs. dry pellets of boiling water to pasteurize as shown in the video. I recommend using grain spawn for fruiting blocks once they are cooled as grain gives a nice nitrogen boost. I typically go 1 to 1.5 lbs. of grain spawn for each block.

@@RenegadeMushrooms Wow, I usually use about 2/3 to maybe 3/4 cup of grain spawn per 10 pound bag. With grain spawn costing about $25 per bag, isn't that quite costly. Can you please help me understand why you decided it was best to use so much spawn per block. I'm thinking you are using 5 pound blocks. Is that correct. Is it driven by the fact you use a pasteurization process? I use sterilized bags, but you rather not have to go through so much work and overhead costs.

@@aprilcummings3220 Wheat is cheap here, $15 per 50 lb. bag. You can use less and still have success, but you can't use nitrogen rich supplements with pasteurization, so I shoot for at least 1 lb. per block (my blocks end up around 7 lbs.) to add nitrogen and get a fast spawn run.

Hey man, hope you're doing well. Just wondering about the mycelium on the grain Spawn. Question - Is it normal for turkey tail to develop like like tan ish stuff to the mycelium? I've got a bit going and it seemed like extremely quick to colonize and then a bit of tan stuff going on.

Tan is not normal for Turkey Tail in my experience. The only species that turns tan that I've grown are Morels. Could be an issue with your culture???

Usually no issues with my sterile technique. I just recently saw my two 5lb lions mane blocks start to popcorn.....I'm like wtf? Then I'm like how is there still no Lions popping up then the browning starts and I'm like oh yeah...... mislabeled shitake. Which is cool cause it was the plan to grow them. Lenny's stuff is great. One of the lions mane like fruited in the jar which looks absolutely amazing the others I just G2G'd them into more jars to buy some time

I just buy cheap wheat for chicken feed. It has a little bit of other grains mixed in but it works great. Wheat or Rye are my personal favorites. If you want super clean organic grain you're going to pay for it.

I've seen nice flushes on 30% masters mix, but the general school of thought is that Turkey Tail doesn't benefit as much from the supplementation because it's so efficient at breaking down sawdust.

I have a block of turkey tail growing now it's about 2 weeks it's all white. My question is how long before I could put it into fruiting conditions and what is the best temperature for fruiting?

I fruit them between 62 - 70 F. Your block should start "blistering" soon. It will start to make hard smooth little blisters or bumps on the surface of the block. Once that happens, I cut my slits and move to fruiting. I'm growing the "wild" strain from Mycelium Emporium.

No, it's fine to clean with vinegar. As with any cleaning agent though, make sure everything is wiped clean and air dried before adding blocks back to the containers.

I would if you're just using it for yourself. It's just dense bundles of mycelium, same as the normal shaped fruits.

Do you sterilise your wood blocks, what type of wood (if known), do you supplement them, and what with if you do?

All of my grow blocks are pasteurized hardwood fuel pellets (wood type unknown). I don't sterilize sawdust, only pasteurize. You can supplement with wheat bran up to 10% with pasteurization, but I typically don't with Turkey Tail because they don't seem to benefit from the extra nitrogen as much as other mushrooms. I use 1 lb. of wheat spawn for every sawdust block so I spawn heavy. My finished fruiting blocks are around 6 lbs.

I just found the wild turkey tail strain at Mushroom Emporium. It comes in syringes. I have only used grain spawn at this point. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I think I would have to take the mycilium from from the seringe and then will need to make grain spawn from it. What medium do I use to make the grain spawn? Do you recommend the hard wood pellets, or do I use a specific grain using your pasturization process?

There are better ways. Simply misting the sides of the tub a couple of times a day or putting moist sponges in there will do a better job.

If you cut more slits, you get more smaller mushrooms. In the end the yield is the same. It's easier to harvest less, but bigger mushrooms.

When I sold mushrooms, I grew antler style Reishi because they were very different from the wild and customers liked them. Turkey Tail actually yield pretty well on sawdust and are a lot cleaner and easier to harvest than their wild brethren. I find a ton of wild Maitake around here, I'm sure you do too. They are always full of bugs and debris. Cultivated are pristine. It's all what you feel like putting effort into really. I had no issue selling all of my cultivated and wild picked Reishi and Turkey Tail. Now I just do it for fun.

Let them grow until they flatten out and make nice fans. The cream colored outer edge will not be as wide, and they will slow way down in growth. That's when I pick them.

I think you can grow about anything in a monotub, but the question is, is it practical? For Turkey Tail, I don't think it is because of its fruiting habits.

@@charlesdarwin1467 They actually top fruit really well, but I think harvesting would be difficult. You would have tons of top fruiting florets and, given free reign, Turkey Tail tenaciously attaches to the substrate. I think you would wreck the top layer of substrate during harvest, and would have to do a lot of trimming to remove sub from the fruit clusters. It's worth a try though. It would be an interesting experiment 👍

I'm in northern ny and I've been shrooming 5-6 years and have never found or any large ones. That's why I'm here. Tried growing them outside too with Fungi-perfecti strain. They colonized ok , started to fruit , then stalled out. Dry summer , cold fall. I did water often though.

They are commonly used medicinally for that purpose, there is a lot of research out there. I use them to make medicinal extractions and also sell them to others that do the same.

Yes, Turkey Tail fresh yields are relatively low when compared to commonly cultivated gourmet mushrooms. However, their water content is very low compared to other mushrooms, many of which are up near 90% water. So, when you factor that in, the dried yield is actually not bad. Turkey tail is commonly sold and used medicinally, so dried is the way to go.
