AMISH SWEET PEANUT BUTTER
My Sister Priscilla's Recipe
Amish church peanut butter
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup marshmallow cream
1 cup corn syrup
Mix together thoroughly. Spread on a piece of bread and enjoy with a side of hot mint tea!
PS I would actually go light on the corn syrup.
And here is my healthy version of the Amish church peanut butter! :-)
Approximately 1/2 cup peanut butter
Approximately 1/4 to 1/2 cup of maple syrup
Approximately 1/2 cup whip cream.
Mix and add until it’s the right consistency and the taste is sweet enough!

It was somewhat nostalgic to hear the loblied being sung. Our family left the Amish when I was around 12. I was glad when we left the Amish for a more progressive church (but still plain). I've been out of that element for many years now, as far as my spiritual journey goes, but still speak the dialect. It was interesting and inspirational to hear your experiences. I grew up in a plain denominational church, not as conservative as Amish, but wore my hair up with a head covering, and am also grateful for my heritage. I live in Lancaster PA and have had the privilege of attending an Amish church service. It was a warm and welcoming group - and just loved the PB spread and simple lunch. I've also been a driver for Amish, and feel so blessed to live in this area - "PA Dutch country", with many Amish neighbors. Blessings on your family. We appreciate your sincerity and sharing your life as you do.

It's funny how alike my church and family were to the Amish you speak of.....I also grew up singing many of the songs I've heard your Amish churches sing. My Dad and Mom were very strict, but we went to a Baptist church. My mother made sweet peanut butter, but she just made it up to make it go further and of course anything with a sweet taste us kids would eat. I still eat it every now and then on bread, crackers or just in a cup with a spoon. (My mom always added the Karo syrup too....) In church my mom was so strict, we had better not make a sound or we got a whipping.... we had to show much respect to anyone older also. My dad never had to tell us kids to behave, he just gave us a look. As for food, everything in our house was homemade..... Everything...I learned very young how to do everything,....by about 11,12, I ran the house after school.... My mom was quite sick all the time after I got to about 11, and couldn't do a lot, so I did everything plus went to school...I got up early to get myself ready for school and make mine and my sisters' breakfast and make a pot of coffee for my mom... I would walk my sister to school then hurry back home to get my things and catch the bus. After school I would start wash (clothes) , and then start dinner/supper. I always made a bread, meat, potato, vegetables, salad, and a dessert ( I would have made over the previous weekend.) I then did the cleaning up (my older brother helped sometimes, then finish wash, dry, put away, then homework and get in bed about 10,11. I did a lot, but was the oldest daughter.... We also had chicken noodle soup, vegetable soup, chili, we also had lots of lunchmeats and cheeses. We had gardens in the summer, we had watermelon days, homemade ice cream 9grandpa would always make it).... We also set for hours and hours in Sunday school, church, after church meals, evening service on wood pews....(No one had comfortable pews, then...haha) We also prayed before every meal, it wasn't silent, then we had to ask to leave the table after eating... It doesn't sound like your upbringing was much different than mine..... sorry so long, I started reminiscing.... 😃

We always said, “If you can’t be on time, be early.” Yes, 3 sermons, and the entire Bible was covered. 3 ministers. I still make peanut butter spread and eat Lebanon Bologna. Yum. This was wonderful to bring back memories.

My paternal grandmother grew up Amish in Pennsylvania. Her parents left the US and moved to Canada where they joined the Mennonites. She left to marry my grandfather. Needless to say she was a great housekeeper and cook. She spoke Pennsylvania Dutch at home.

Our church has fellowship meal the first Sunday of the month. Since so many of our church members have Amish background, and then there are quite a few (like myself) that don't... the food committee decided to have an Amish lunch for the fellowship meal. My husband was Amish many years ago and he showed me how to make the Amish sandwich. It is actually very good!!! Oh by the way... Mary... you looked very cute in your Amish dress!!! LOL!!!

I have had the Amish peanut butter before. It's so delicious. I have had it on bread,ice cream and apple pie. My niece's family is from the Amish community. She married my nephew in Sugarcreek. Her dad's siblings,all but one sister left the Amish. I'm going to fly out to Ohio this weekend for my two week vacation in Amish country to visit them. I'm so excited.

Fascinating! So very interesting. I hope you will do more. The background church singing was a nice addition. Maybe you can share how each of your families made the decision that the old ways were not necessarily where God was leading your families. Did your whole families go along with the transitions? I’m also curious about the photos Mary showed of her siblings. Were photos allowed in your districts? Look forward to more. Maybe occasionally throw in some dialect of Amish words for things? (Mary, you looked so beautiful in your Amish clothing. No wonder Marvin fell in love…lol)

My background is growing up in a conservative group whose ladies wore a covering (not amish). I am appreciative and grateful of my background. Mary, your dress and cap reminded me of the group we called amish-mennonite (Beachy) in my home community. Ooohh...amish peanut butter is a sweet memory for me. When I am privileged to eat at an "amish" restaurant, I make sure to enjoy the peanut butter 😊. Another enjoyable video!

I enjoy your videos and learning about your life as Amish. I also follow your sister Priscilla. I wanted to comment about the sweet peanut butter. I grew up with a similar peanut butter spread, only we used peanut butter, Karo light corn syrup and butter (instead of the marshmallow creme). Your recipe sounds delicious too. I want to try it with maple syrup and whipped cream. Thanks so much for sharing.

Hi Mullet family, Awwww what a glorious video! I have to say, I absolutely love watching you both laugh with each other. Every time I’m around Amish folks they never smile, not very friendly, including the children. I always wonder, are Amish taught not to laugh, cut up and have fun. Maybe they do within themselves, But not so much in public. No disrespect by all means. But are y’all taught to be sober like around people that’s not Amish? I was not Amish but my dad was from Pennsylvania and his family (great grandparents )were Penn/dutch , possibly Amish, I don't know the history of his side very well)he would make me peanut butter/syrup or honey sandwiches all the time. I wonder if his mamma made if for him? I didn't grow up speaking german but I somehow understand most of the language. It feels familiar. I was gifted an Amish cookbook when I got married and it is taped together and I make bread and most of the recipes from it alot.I love the recipes so much they fill my family's bellies in the best way. I would have to separate the meat & cheese to a different slice of bread. Wouldn’t be able to eat the sweet peanut butter with the savory. Please explain the beets. They are a different color than I’m used to. I’ve only ever seen bottled really red beets.

Biengs that I am not Amish, my Mom, not sure where she got the recipe, would mix karo syrup or maple syrup in the peanut butter. Mom would make these sandwiches, and my sister and I would take them for lunch at school. I can remember some of the other school kids would be jealous and would want to trade lunches because they were such a treat.

Looks to me like your amish upbringing did you a lot of good. You look better, happier, healthier, and more vibrant than so many of the fat, nasty slobs that live where I do. And then they wonder why they are so miserable. I envy the amish in a way and wish I had grown up a lot more like them. A lot of modern day things have sucked the joy and simplicity out of the world.

I GREW UP IN THE PRIMITIVE BAPTIST CHURCH. FROM WHAT I HAVE READ AND SEEN WE HAD SO MANY OF THE SAME BELIEVES. THE SINGING IS THE SAME. WE DID NOT HAVE ANY MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS, SOMEONE WOULD GET UP AND PITCH THE SONGS. THEY WASHED FEET AT AN ASSOCIATION MEETING AND HAD A COMMUTION ALSO, THAT MET ONCE A YEAR AT THE DIFFERENT CHURCHES. A GROUP OF CHURCHES MADE UP AN ASSOCIATION. THE CHURCHES IN THE ASSOCIATION ONLY MET ONCE A MONTH AT THE DIFFERENT CHURCHES. THE CHURCH IN OUR TOWN HAD SERVICES ON THE -THIRD SUNDAY AND SAT. NIGHT BEFORE. THE REST OF THE MONTH YOU WENT TO THE CHURCH IN ANOTHER TOWN. WE WOULD ALSO GO TO OTHER ASSOCIATION MEETINGS. EVERY SUNDAY MEETING HAD -DINNER ON THE GROUND- EVERYONE COOKED AND BROUGHT DIFFERENT DISHES AND PUT THEM TOGETHER. WE WOULD EAT VISIT A LITTLE AND START BACK HOME. SOMETIMES IT WAS AN HOUR OR TWO AWAY FROM OUR HOME. MOST SUNDAYS THERE WAS MORE THAN -ONE- PREACHER SO THE SERVICES WERE LONG. HARD ON LITTLE KIDS AND GROWN UP.

Many people where they live according to their religion, it’s because,you are not dressing in a respectable manner and, those religions follow a certain dress code!

Again it’s because, your dressing for religion and, the way the Amish live their life is like other religions that tend to make it surrounding their lifestyle so, with that those type of religions like the Amish you have to dress according to the dress code, it’s that simple! Even today in churches where it’s not so, much about the lifestyle, you will always have someone trying to tell you how to dress and, the last time, I went to a church they were also trying to tell me how to dress for a Sunday Evening Service,after that, I left , a lot of people no longer go to church for that very reason! Even in the summer you will see women wear super short shorts and, they won’t say anything to a particular set a women and, yet, they would other women, I never wore my shorts super short and, I was talking about this to a friend and, he knows, I don’t but, I was telling him these certain women who were and, nothing was being said to them and, he said, are you serious, he about couldn’t believe it. They told me if they had new people or visitors came in stated that, I might give them a bad look and, it was the preacher’s mother who said it and, that preacher was giving his mom too much freedom to do certain things her way! I continued a few times to wear my shorts, just to prove she wasn’t going to tell me what, I could and couldn’t do and, then, I stopped going altogether!
