In solidarity with several other viewers, I would like to point out that the word แขก (khaek), meaning a person with South Asian or Middle Eastern ancestry, is not a derogatory word. Likewise, the word ฝรัง (farang) meaning a Caucasian, that is a person of European ancestry, is not a derogatory word. Of course, these words can be (and sometimes are) used insultingly, but usually they are used without any negative connotation. Similarly, the English words "American", "Chinese" and "Russian" are not derogatory words, but they can be (and sometimes are) used in a derogatory way.

Agreed! We always use the word "เเขก" when referring to our great grandmother's ethnicity (she was from India). We do not think of it as being a derogatory term.

The ultranationalism has widely spreaded in Thailand for hundreds years so there're some senses of discrimination and racism in every words using for calling foreigners such as khaek, farang, jek (chinese), yoon (japanese), lao, etc. But currently, it depends on the tone of voice and context. For me, apart from farang, I would avoid using the others mentioned above.

ในความคิดของคนไทยคำว่า"แขก" ไม่ใช่คำเหยียดเชื้อชาติ แต่เป็นคำสรรพนามแยกแยะเชื้อชาติว่านี้คือ คนแขก คนไทย คนจีน คนฝรั่ง คนลาวเท่านั้นเอง คนต่างชาติไม่ควรคิดมากเกินไป

There's much to love about this guy. He's making a go of his life and also making a difference. He came to Thailand at one year of age, so of course he is Thai. But why is his Thai so easier to understand???? I think because he speaks full on correct Thai. I imagine that as an Indian Thai he was motivated to do well in class and also maybe pushed a little by mum & dad. The result is that he speaks Thai perfectly and has no real regional influence. I sometimes find it hard to understand what some Thai males are saying.....even after 40+ years of exposure to Thailand....so kudo's to this guy for making it so easy to understand what he is saying!!!!! Cheers, great video yet again. PS. Go the Swannies tomorrow in their elimination final :)

Yes, that's right, "แขก - Khaek" and "ฝรั่ง - Fa Rang" are not words with negative connotations. It's just a word that we Thais use to refer to you foreigners. But just specifying it in a bit more detail than words "Foreigners (of all races)". But if it is the word that we Thais call Asian people, because we have the same yellow skin, black hair, and black eyes, we Thais are often referred to by different countries, such as Chinese people, Japanese people, Korean people, Laotian people, Cambodian people, Burmese people.

The term “yellow” doesn’t exactly work in southeast asia, it only works in the west. Indonesia alone has over 1000 ethnic groups and around 800 languages and on top of it most of southeast asians are tan/ brown unless they are of east asian descent

My Thai is weak but it's my dream to settle in Thailand as well. I visit Thailand twice a year and get kicked out after every 15 days, haha. But I know what Vijo means when he says he feels at home when he returns to Thailand. People in my country assume I love it because of superficial reasons (partying, drinking, women, etc), but my reason is none of that.... I just mentally feel FREE in Thailand. I feel at peace. I feel angry and upset in my country, but the moment I get off the plane in BKK, I am at peace.

Derogatory term? Nah. Personally I don’t feel that there is any negative connotation adhere to this term. It’s just a generic term that clarifies specific features of an ethnical appearance like when white pp get called Farang. Just an umbrella term to give idea if a person is ‘farang’, ‘khaek’, ‘Chinese’, or ‘Thai’. Did it once has a derogatory origin? I don’t know, maybe yes, I never look into its history. But at the present days pp here wont see this as offensive term. The term Khaek Khao (white) is also another detailed term using to address those from Middle East. As to the locals’ eyes, Khaek and Khaek Khao has different facial features and appearance.
