I was born in 1956 and the world has changed significantly since I met my true love at LSU in 1978, later our parents found out we were more than just college roommates, a emotional Catholic scandal of epic proportions ensued and we ended up fleeing for sanctuary in San Francisco in 1982 to find a safe welcoming place to live. That is exactly what we found and we built a full life and eventually bought a house, and when it came time to retire, we cashed out and returned to live in the community we were originally raised in. Times change and people do too. btw - we have been together for 45 years and are still going strong:-)

My father also attended LSU in that time frame. I’m forever grateful for his acceptance.

I’m sure we could converse for hours on end over some of the points that you mentioned in your post. Having an exceptionally similar experience growing up in the northeast part of the province back in the sixties and seventies, I had to compromise a lot of my character, my queer eccentricities and sensibilities in order to be safe. Sometimes doing that held the status quo, but oftentimes not. I intuitively knew that I didn’t want to end up like one of those “bachelor farmers” of my parents and grandparents generation who I witnessed living their lives of quiet desperation and repression. I knew had to leave in order to grow and gain a greater perspective of the world and my place in it. When I had the opportunity to visit my hometown a few years ago after an absence of 25 years, I found that there was a politely implied and enforced sense of tolerance but little to no real understanding and acceptance, except from the very few who always accepted me unconditionally from basically day one. And I’m sure that a new generation of “bachelor farmers“ were/are making a go at it, albeit with a little more fortitude and pride. I admit that I definitely miss the sanctuary of rural life. I miss the stars, the northern lights, the space of “ quiet” and that undeniable freshness (and not so freshness)😉of smells. I understand and respect it’s importance. And after all this time, many people I encounter don’t really see me as an urbanite either, including myself. I rarely acquaint myself with the LGBTQ + community on the whole as time goes on and have found camaraderie in quieter niches. I guess I’m somewhere in between and therefore, perhaps part of my life’s calling is to help bridge the gaps and bring a sense of some sort of enlightened perspective through the talents I’ve been given and have honed over the years. Time will tell. The world now seems to be in an accelerated rate of transformation. How it pans out is anyone’s guess. But since discovering your social media presence, I do admit that I am concerned for your safety considering the geopolitical and religious implications of rural life. I hope you have certain contingency plans in place for yourself just in case (although you look like you can take care yourself quite well!) I enjoy your posts.👍🏻😎

You are such an interesting person. Your thoughts are spot on. I grew up in a rural, conservative place and I totally agree with you. I am much older and it would have been much more difficult when I was young. Also your perspective on rural versus urban ideas are so true. I’m glad I have subscribed to your vlog.

It's probably because you're Canadian, but you have the advantage, if you want to call it that, of being a country person and you don't sound like one. I grew up in small town Texas in the 80s and 90s. My late father was a preacher. I was born disabled on top of being bisexual, so, to this day, I still can't be out in real life. Short of a medical and monetary proverbial miracle, I won't ever be able to be out. I'm also from a time when most people thought being bisexual was literally imaginary and "you just don't want to pick one" was the thing a lot of people would say.

Trust me, plenty of rural and small town Canadians have thick accents. I live in a midsized city that is surrounded by the Bible Belt of Southern Ontario (even in town you'll be inundated with unwanted street preachers and people handing out chick track and other fundamentalist propaganda to win souls), and I work with a whole lot of people who live outside of town but who come in for the work. You can very clearly tell who is from outside of town and who grew up in a city with how they sound like they just stepped out of a Letterkenny episode.

Growing up in a very conservative area, I noticed that my fellow LGBTQ members had many difficulties mentally. I unfortunately didn’t get to know this person, but a member in the town over committed suicide over being bullied because he was bi. It was very unfortunate because nothing was done towards his bullies.

Thank you for sharing this. I agree that it's sad that hate crimes are still being committed against others who choose to love differently. It's good that there's areas where people can be themselves and be safe. I had wondered what it was like for you growing up in a rural area, and now I know. Love you so much Jaks!

Internalized homophobia is a driving factor in abusive behavior. My guess is that your bully was dealing with his own same sex attraction issues and hated it so much that his hatred spilled out onto other people. Not an excuse but certainly a valid theory.

I don't like when people say a relationship between two men is private, while everyone celebrates a relationship between a man and woman. My mom always encouraged one date with a girl, but never liked guys I dated for months. I found all my ideology changed when I found someone to love more than myself. Wherever you choose to make a home together, you want them to feel safe. We have to fight so much. I don't want them to have to fight at home.

Spot-on perspective. You are blessed if you "find someone to love more than yourself." That is true love. Good for you, bro............>Ray

Bachelor farmers living in quiet desperation.... that is so sad 😢. Guys, the country and country life is for everyone, not just the straights. It can be hard, but have confidence in who you are and show your love for your sweet partner if you are lucky enough to have one. That confidence and openness will rub off. And if someone has a problem with that, well that's just too bad for them.

You're rock solid, Jaks, and extremely apt in expressing yourself. Just lost my partner of 54 very happy years, but all in Toronto, even though we often thought of retiring to a farm. We might have then encountered some of what you described. You're a great guy and will be a real joy for some lucky guy. Have a wonderful life, Jaks.....and keep up appearing here. HUGS, John.

Conservative country American is a whole different level of scary vs Canadian country. Canadians are generally friendly people and a lot of Americans in conservative America can get violent and very opinionated with the Bible sins

I question the use of the term conservative when I think you mean closed minded. Conservative has political meanings. I enjoy your stories.
