I loved hearing your story, Tia! I have a white mother and a black father. I grew up in an almost all-white environment (besides staying at my grandparents’ house on weekends) so it was so interesting to hear that there was a whole group of mixed kids that you hung out with when you were young. When I was in elementary school, racism was directed at me from both other students and teachers. My complexion, my hair texture, and my curvy body type were always picked on and I never felt attractive or good enough. I transferred to a very diverse school for my middle school years, which is where I met the wonderful man I’m engaged to now... and he also happens to be biracial, lol! As a Canadian Biracial woman not only are the dynamics different between having a white mom and a black dad, but also from just being raised in Canada with Canadians… When I hear things like this it makes me feel resentful towards white Americans. Canadians are not like this, so separated and race focused! It was at a Canadian airport where I , a Jew, who immigrated to Israel, was "randomly" searched. My Christian friends were the ones who told me that I was pulled aside after the Security person stared at my Star of David necklace. I was 60 years old at the time. I am quiet and not disrespectful. I was told that it was random, but this was repeated in 4 other airports in the US. Each time I was told that it was a "random" search.

I can totally relate. I remember my mom (biracial) picking me (seemingly white-ish) up from school one day. the new teacher telling her "the child can only be picked up by her mother"... I will never forget my mom's face, a mix of anger, sadness and exhaustion when she told the teacher she was in fact my mother. It was the first time I've ever noticed, however was also clear to me that it wasn't the first time it had happened, sadly wasn't the last either.

I am biracial and have had a very different experience growing up in Australia. I didn't experienced any of what you or your parents experienced and I lived quite a normal life in highschool like everyone else. Never got any hate because of my ethnic background. It really makes me think just how different it is in the US and how thankful I am to live in Aus.

I think my parents tried to hide racism from me and my brother growing up as much as possible by ignoring it. My parents moved into an all white neighborhood with my older sisters and they faced a lot of racism because of that. When me and my brother came along, most of the white people left and other races moved into the neighborhood. Me and my brother went to an all white private school, I liked the school from nursery all the way up to kindergarten. First grade is when I was thrust into the real world and I got my dose of racism when one of my friends introduced me in the morning just before class to his mother and she freaked out and yelled at me right in front of the whole auditorium of students. At the time I didn't know the meaning to some of the words she was using or why she was so upset at me and her child. I was confused and embarrassed at the same time. I also had my friends that I knew since nursery have their older siblings telling them not to play with me or parents out right threatening to take their kids out the school if teachers didn't stop their kids from interacting with me. This caused the school to eventually kick me out. Sadly, when I came to a predominantly Black Public school 2 years later I faced racism from Black kids who didn't want to play with me because I dressed white and talked white as they put it. It was rough growing up not fitting in because you don't meet the social norms that society places upon people. I don't fit into just one box, I was brought up in a diverse family with a very open mind. I feel sorry for those people who live in a bubble and can't open their closed minds to new ways of thinking.

The Mowry family were true role models for my twin sister and I. We loved Sister, Sister, and how loving and compassionate people and Tia and Tamera were, on and off screen. We learned about their biracial background because it was incorporated into the last episodes of the series, and it opened our eyes to some real issues they faced in their lives. It didn’t matter to us that they didn’t look like us because they were good people. It is sad that we are still having this conversation, but I commend you Tia for continuing to be a good role model to your son and fans and ensuring that the conversation is steered in a positive direction. Your parents story is so romantic. Your dad really pursued your mom no matter what. It's crazy to think that anyone would have a problem with that. You and your sister have always been people I looked up to as a teen. I grew up watching your show and I don't ever remember thinking, "Wonder if their parents are both black or black and white?" I have a friend from elementary school who is biracial. Again, I never thought anything of it. She was my friend. She was a true friend when many others weren't. When we got older she shared a couple of her experiences with me of feeling like you did where the white girls didn't want her cause she was too white and the black girls wouldn't claim her cause she was too white. Thank you for sharing this and many stories. There are many people out there that have those same types of experiences unfortunately and others who are ignorant to it.

Its definitely tea to interracial dating, my bf is white but Im grateful we havent experienced any problems for 3 yrs we just get alot of hard stares from black males. Im happy that the Interracial couples community is growing no matter what color the two people are. It shows unity and a judgement free zone.

You are telling my story. We did not talk about race mom black dad white. But at about 2nd grade we moved to suburbs and some kids called us zebra and n word. We had no idea what that meant but their tone seemed mean to us. We told dad and he was do furious that we knew it was bad. He confronted the kids parents and they somewhat had to sit us down and talk “color”. As a kid I was confused but I got over it. Today I consider myself all things.

Being bi racial you can choose which side of your heritage you would like to identify with(as far as upbringing and appearance) , Tia looks more like the black side of her heritage.

For example, many biracials promote and are praised for their european heritage when it comes to societal beauty standards and reject their African heritage because it is looked down upon.

Longer than not it was the law in this society that any baby born to an interracial couple if 1 is black that is what that baby was legally. We all know whites dominated this society. So its naive to tell a child they won't get viewed as only black especially if the features are even slightly obvious. It would be different if this world was perfect and flawless. But of course always teach them about both sides of their herritage as they're old enough to understand
