Are you interested in these seedlings? I am NOT going to keep all these. I will probably do a give-away by fall, assuming these grow well. Might just do a bit of rootwork on a few dozen in 4-6 weeks. Plant them in individual containers, and then by fall share them with people in the EU. Want to get some of these?
Post with the #gimme_some_elms, and you are on my list!
How I got a tray full of seedlings in 11 days from collecting the seeds!? Watch the video and see how I planted them, how to recognize elm seeds and what I do when they get older.
This is one of the fastest germinations of tree seeds I have experienced! In 11 days from the tree to a pot full of seedlings! Umus (elm) seeds germinate willingly, if collected at the right time of the year and can be a real pleasure to work with.

Wouter is a very dutch name. Are you in the Netherlands? when driving around, look for trees full of clusters of brownish yellow. You can see the seed from a distande, as they make soo much of it!

I tried two years ago with some seeds from the elm right outside our house. I just plopped the seeds in a glass of water and waited until I saw roots, then planted them in a mix of soil and perlite. They are now like a meter tall (would be taller if I hadn't cut them) and grow like crazy. They make great bonsai, I think, because they have such small leaves. :)

Interestingly, I collected some Scotch Elm seeds from a tree on my local golf course last Tuesday (May 24th). I planted them the next day in an identical method as you did. The first seeds sprouted on Monday (just 6 days after collection and 5 after planting). As of this pm I have at least 30-35 seedlings above ground and I can see more pushing soil up. Hopefully my bonsai club members want some! :D

Here in Maryland in the USA , the elms are setting seeds in late October. I’m going to try sowing outside, stratifying in the fridge, and sowing some inside to avoid winter. I got a picture of the flowers in late September then saw your video about collecting seeds and wondered why you said that elms seed in the spring. Different latitudes I guess. Wish me luck.
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai 8 ай бұрын
Maybe different latitudes, but can also be different elm species! Here the elms flower and set seed in insane pace, and when I first started looking for seed, I also expected late-summer seed setting

When do you do the first prune for elm seedling?
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai 11 ай бұрын
This is a bit of a question like how long is a piece of string. It depends a lot on the intend I have with the tree, but normally for the first 1-2 years there is a focus on just getting a healthy plant.
