Will get a job so I can get moving with my new gardening skills, and interest in food storage for short and long term. This is guided by the Holy Spirit so not sure what will be happening in the future to require these skills.

I would recommend that anyone thinking about getting a freeze dryer should try a few freeze dried items and see if you like the taste and texture first. I find that freeze dried fruit is interesting as a snack but definitely not as tasty as fresh or canned. Freeze dried herbs are very good in cooking and keep a long time. However, I personally do not care for freeze dried vegetables; I much prefer fresh or dehydrated over the freeze dried veggies. I do have some #10 cans of freeze dried foods for long term emergency use, as they supposedly can keep their full vitamin value for 10 - 25 years. So, try the different options before you buy machines or preprepared items of any kind to make sure what will work best for you and your family. We all have different tastes, abilities, and priorities.

I'm new to gardening. This is the first year that I'm going to try to have a decent garden. I really need to understand what to do with all the food when it is time to harvest. What recipes do you use: onions, potatoes, tomatoes, squash, strawberries, beans, peas, etc. I saw that you have a few recipes on your blog, but having them by veggie would be amazing! How do you prep dry goods like rice, noodles and dry beans for Mason jar vacume sealing for both long and short term storage? Vacume Mason jars sealing is my preferred method for both in which I would like to try. Do you freeze for 14 days to kill bugs/bug eggs in orginal packaging then dry in the oven on a cookie sheet for a period of time to remove any moisture before putting into Mason Jars to vacume seal? Do you then also put in a moisture absorber? 🤷♀️
@GrowingInTheGarden2 жыл бұрын
Haven't done any dry goods yet. I'm still learning.
@raspillade60272 жыл бұрын
You don’t typically freeze dry foods with a low moisture content like rice & pasta. You freeze for 3 days to kill eggs/larvae, or you can put them in sterile mason jars and bake in the oven to kill with heat. Like canning, you put on lids and let the vacuum seal form with the rising temperature. You never need moisture absorbers with freeze drying because it shouldn’t be any moisture when done properly. If there is you need to continue the freeze drying process
@IAMYOU-.2 жыл бұрын
Put your dry goods in in a Mylar bag with a oxygen absorber and it’s good for 20 plus years No need to place in a freezer to kill bugs because the oxygen absorber will do that anyway
