Taking photos of the paintings aren't allowed because the flashlight causes to deteriorate them faster. Those paintings were once destroyed by a person who threw black oil over them. It took so much effort to restore to what you can see now. Whole structure is made to recycle/ reuse the water. Water in the ponds on top of the rock would connect to the water fountains i think which you missed, then it'll flow to the inner and out moats which will eventually flow into the sigiriya lake and paddy fields.

Sigiriya was a castle created by king Kashyapa. Kashyapa assassinated his father king Dhathusena for the throne since Kashyapa wasn't the rightful heir. Fearing that his brother would kill him too, Kashyapa's younger brother Moggallana (the rightful heir to the throne) fled to south India and threatened to take back his throne. So Kashyapa escaped to this rock and built a whole castle on it and a city surrounding it for protection. Years later, Moggallana returned, this time with a huge army. He successfully attacked the castle. Kashyapa realised that he was doomed so he grabbed a sword and stabbed himself in the chest. Overall, a very wholesome story...

2.36 is an Asian water monitor. Very common to see on a water source but their bite and their tail are very nasty. 13.37 is another rock formation called Pidurangala close to Sigirya. It was a vantage point for the Enemy army to observe the Sigiriya Kindom where they were planning the Attack later on

Regarding taking picture's about paintings is actually about light flashes. I think it has some sort of a effect on the painting. Experts have confirmed that the camera flash is bad for the frescoes. The matter was given serious attention to due to the remarkable increase of visitors to this site " But could not find a reliable source though. Mostly in news outlets this is mentioned.
