I made a similar level indicator with a wine cork and bamboo skewer. I knew it would absorb water and rot but it worked OK for one grow. Your way looks much better. Thanks!

An electronic dipstick should be easy to construct. Lamp lights when water closes a circuit. I wonder why no one has done it?

why not just add the water by using a measuring jug and then mark where the polystyrene lifts up to. Would this work?

Do you secure the PVC pipe to the container in some way? Or is it just held in place by pressure from the top of the container?

Thanks for your informative simple solutions They are spot on. I was concerned with this water level unit letting mosquitoes into the water below the screen. Gluing a jelly jar lid with a hole in it for your pvc pipe and screwing on the glass jar solved the bug and rain water intrusion for out door growing. Acrylic latex caulk works well as a glue if you can leave it set overnight.

Yes, the length of the indicator rising above the pipe slightly underestimates the height of the solution in the tank. I don't understand the first part of the question.

Although I don't have information on my neoprene, there are food safe sponge neoprenes available. I am hoping that this youtube encourages someone to find an even better material than the sponge neoprene which I used.

sorry dr. I prefer to drill holes on the outside container to gauge the water level. once the hole is drilled to the appropriate level, no matter what rain may come, it can be over watered... the hole just drains the water out. I use 2, 1/4 inch holes.

Kratky method in 5 gallon buckets how low of fluids is too low and after the roots are adult stage what would be the max fluid level?

Below 2 inches from the bottom is likely too low and above 2 inches from the the bottom of the net pot to the solution surface (after the initial drop) is likely too high.
