If you're interested in the free 7-day trial of the Garden Planner, you can find that here: www.growveg.com/garden-planner-intro.aspx (It's best on a PC, Mac or iPad so you have plenty of room for planning, though we added support for phones in late 2023 so you can also now plan on a phone, or view and edit your plan outside). What are you planning in your garden this year? Comment below...

My wife and I bought our first house in Texas this time last year and we have a large backyard and 1/2 an acre, or about 23k square feet. We installed a pond and 4 raised beds last year and had a decent little garden. Now, in 2024, we are literally going to turn the entire backyard into a micro homestead. We have designed everything and now have to build and place the following before spring (we have not done anything yet), so 4 months to do all this: 4 more raised beds, 5x 20ft in-ground garden rows for significantly more garden room, a 1,000 square foot wildflower garden with a 20 frame bee hive facing it, 5 peach trees, 5 blueberry bushes, grapes on our gazebo, a chicken coop and run for 6 chickens, a 100 gallon rain collector, an irrigation system for it all, and an 8'x10' greenhouse. 4 months is gonna go by fast.

A reminder (as I have learned) is to have a backup plan in your mind just in case. Where I am in Canada (and much of the Northern US), had a Gypsy moth invasion and suddenly my cooler garden spots were gone as the moths stripped every leaf off every tree. I had to race to put together shade cloths and ways to hold them up (I used old sheets which presented some issues). Now this month heavy wet snow took down a large shade branch over another spot so I will have to plant things differently to accommodate that come spring. Nature is always switching things up on us in one way or another so your garden plan will have to also, some times last minute. Great video as always and I'm going to try your garden planner, looks fun, thanks.

Hi Sara, that's really lovely to hear. Thanks so much for the feedback! Cheryl - the Garden Planner may not work on your phone or tablet. It works on iPad OS 12 or later, and it will also work on some other reasonably fast tablets. Phones are not yet supported due to the small screen size. You can also use the Publish Plan to Web feature in the Garden Planner on a computer to create a copy of your plan and Plant List on our servers. This can then be viewed from any internet-connected mobile device, although it can't be changed from there. The online Garden Journal is compatible with tablets and phones so you can record notes, photos, planting and harvesting while out in the garden.

@@GrowVeg glad I asked before getting or trialling it as wouldn’t be able to use it sadly. Will wait till there is a version I can use and then trial it. But it has given me the idea of how I need to work out my own grow space and how to do it on paper as I am quite creative. So that’s good.

@@cherylhowker1792 Hi! I have used it on my phone in a pinch but its a little harder to use. I use a laptop and then when I have things roughly set I print out the planting schedule. I have two plots of 9ft wide to 2ft deep on the verge of the back garden. One is protected by a conservatory, the other at the far end of the garden gets the most amount of sun, even with it being north facing. So not a huge amount of room and not ideal placement and yet just with a little planning last year I had a bumper harvest and this year I have 10 main crops to grow outside, as well as the regular tomatoes, aubergines (first time) inside the conservatory and plenty of flowers in and amongst the plots. First time using a propogator station and a cold frame which should be interesting to see the result of them both. This will be the first year I am doing everything from seed as well so its going to be an exciting year, even if some of it fails, its worth a go regardless. I cannot stress enough how joyful it feels to conceptualise the garden of your dreams (and budget/time) and nurture it along to enjoy! Thank you for all that you do Ben, you certainly inspire this budding gardener!

Happy New Year! The artic storm devastated my winter garden with temps ranging from nighttime lows as low as -12C to daytime highs of -5C. It was too many days of subfreezing temperatures. It survived the worst part of the storm, the first three days, but on the fourth day I woke to heavy damage, and the fifth day brought 95 percent devastation. A few odd plants survived, and weeds. Not a single weed died in the freeze-just my garden veggies. It has been 42 years since a storm this severe hit our area, Talladega Alabama. Next year, I'll try rear round gardening again. Also, I will be adding a 3.5m x 3m x 2m poly tunnel greenhouse to my garden with three raised beds 244cm x 60cm x 24cm inside it. For now, I am pulling weeds, and covering the raised beds and grow pots with a thick blanket of leaves. In about a week, I will be ordering Albion Strawberry plants for my GreenStalk tower, and purchasing lumber for the greenhouse base and raised beds.

Happy new year Ben, I’ve been growing veg for 5 years now and learned a lot from you. I would just say though to people just starting out , I have to grow on the north side of my bungalow, so only the parts farthest away from the building get about 6 hours in summer and other bits get less, I do have some beds on the south west side which do get about 4 -5 hours, by mixing my crops so beans get the most sun and lettuce get the least I grow a large range of crops, so don’t be put off if your space isn’t perfect.

I am focusing my garden on kitchen staples such as tomatoes, potatoes, beans, peppers, pumpkins and other easily preserved vegetables and/or herbs that will lend themselves to canning or dehydrating. I'm also planning a few fun things that just look interesting, like bird house gourds and some seasonal treats such as melons and popcorn. I watched the video on money saver crops. I have not had much success with any of the squash that you featured (except the pumpkins) as powdery mildew was a real problem. I do plan on having a small number of those this year, and experimenting with 'organic' vs 'enviro-nazi' methods of managing the problem, as well as trying some resistent hybrid cultivars (however, I prefer heirloom varieties so I can save the seed). LOL! I will be testing a 'natural' milk based spray vs a copper sulfate approach and see which one is better. I have found that -- generally speaking -- so-called organic products end up being two or three times as expensive, and half as effective as the much maligned 'chemical' alternatives. (Never mind that EVERYTHING can be broken down into it's chemical parts, and there are some very 'natural', 'organic' things in nature that are quite toxic....but I digress.) I love your channel and passion! And thank you for mentioning the pollinators! I am also a hobbyist bee keeper (I think the fancy term is apiarist). So many people blame chemicals for the demise of our bee populations (and that is partially true) but, even more so, it is a problem of habitat and available forage. Our bees are starving and have no place to live as land is cleared of 'weeds' and trees. So, plant those flowers or we humans may also starve! Without the pollinators there is no food!

Had some extra under the bed storage containers that the lids failed. They were long (4” deep) and of sturdy plastic that had light properties similar to white frost cloth. Used them over lettuce that I was a little late planting due to a very virulent bout of sickness🫤. The lettuce survived several nights of seven degree weather. I was blown away! Apparently the small amount of convection during the day kept the soil warm! Other plants did not fare so well as I was hoping that we may have done a replay of the seventy degree weather of last Christmas. This winter’s losses include my citrus trees stored in the greenhouse due to power failure. The cold separated the extension cords. We now have a light connected to it so we can look out the window and see if the power is off. The fruit tree and berry cuttings are doing well in the hydroponics system in the garage. The six peppers that I pulled from the garden before the first frost are also in the garage but in a separate system have two bell peppers that should be ready shortly. The other peppers have buds. I am hoping for an early spring harvest. Note: interspersed with the cuttings I also have lettuce growing from some packaged lettuce with roots that we bought from the store. We pulled off most of the outer leaves to eat and then tucked in the rest. So far so good. You gotta do what you gotta do!

Sounds like the winter chill has proved a challenge. I hope you get a superb early crop from your peppers. :-)

Somewhere you have a video about soil mixes….. I’m having some difficulty finding it but I have an idea for your channel that I would love to see. Try different recipes and plant the same plant, with a control just in the ground. Then check in monthly and see what challenges each come up with. I think SEEing the moisture issues with and without proper management would be helpful for me to understand.

I have used your garden planner for over two years now and it has been extremely beneficial in so many ways. Do you ever have plans of making a mobile app that would allow that access on a cell phone as well as a computer? It’s already a great product, but that would take it to a whole different level!

I got the garden place and love it!! All I wish was an easy way to create “in ground rows” rather than create a “garden bed” I’ve spent a lot of time in this garden app and can only use it on my pc, as I don’t have a tablet big enough. I like that you can do the companions, it lists companions, and spacing, as well as print both the chart and the list of the plants.

How about a garden on a bit of a slope? I have a nice sunny spot, but its a gentle slope. My wife thinks I'm crazy, but I have a feeling the slope will add to drainage nicely, and we get a lot of moisture here.
@GrowVeg

My garden is on a gentle slope and does just fine. You can terrace the growing areas or use raised beds, dug into the slope, to give flat growing areas. And if the slope faces the sun you're onto a winner!

This is brilliant! I'm a beginner and it's all a bit overwhelming at the moment. I want to give much of my garden to wildlife so combining pollinators with the produce is superb for me. I live on my own and I'm vegetarian so it makes sense to have my own produce. I'm worried that I won't be able to eat everything I grow but I suppose I can give some away and even see if any local restaurants want to buy some. I need to keep things simple to begin with so I'm planning to just start with onions, peas, potatoes, tomatoes and maybe kale or runner beans. As my knowledge and confidence grows I can hopefully expand. I'm going to plant a plum tree and some hardy fruit shrubs ay the far end of the garden so they can look after themselves.

I'm going to need to plan out paths next season as I currently essentially have a food forest but with annual crops. I'm now certain any productivity I might lose to the paths will be made up for by more easily keeping on top of the weeds.
@GrowVeg

Absolutely. And paths can still add to the overall fertility of the soil and contribute to surrounding crop health. 😀

2022 garden season here in Tennessee Cumberland Plateau was challenging to say the least. Cold spring w/heavy rains, May-July summer unbearable heat, Aug-Oct drought with early freeze. The season was not good for predators and pests either forcing them to searching for water discover irrigation systems, gardens and wreaking havoc. Irish potatoes were small in size and crop. Rabbits were extremely destructive and ate most of my herb garden as well. Amazingly sweet potatoes were looking fabulous. Late Sept I dug them up only to find nearly every root had a bite(s) out of them. Voles or rats burrowed under my 3ftx18ft bed and had earlier ate young corn with seed kernel still attached and decimated green beans, cucumbers and carrots. Not good for harvests. 2023 I'm converting my 12ft polytunnel, 16ft polytunnel and 10x10 polycarbonate to various hydroponics protective cover environments. 16ft will be stonewool slabs of tomatoes 14 plants and 4 bell peppers. 12ft will be peas/broccoli spring and carrot/beets fall in 5gal and 7 gal growbags drip hydro. 10x10 will be hot house for Irish potatoes (15gal growbags) and sweet potatoes compact variety vertical trellis (20gal growbags) in grow bags hydro drip. All grow bags ProMix soilless medium. I'll be starting seed and up potting to gal containers to transplant larger plants into raised inground beds. 2023 will be a trial for me duplicating plantings in both traditional inground raised beds and also inside poly tunnels/greenhouses. Now that I'm depending on much of my harvest 2023 I want to ensure crop yields. I live at 2,000ft elevation and it seems conditions challenging to gardening, invasive critters also ramp up. I'll be subscribing again this year - love the planner. It really helps me to initially plan 2 polytunnels, 1 polycarbonate year round greenhouse and 8 inground raised beds and also helps to rotate vegs and take advantage Spring, Summer and Fall crops as well as adopt flexible gardening depending on weather. Hope you folks are staying warm over there. Similar brutal temps that we experienced two weeks ago are coming your way...
