No, that was not a mistake. Prince Charming's real name, is David…. but he uses his dead identical twin's name, James, as an alias. I would suggest, you watch episode 1.06 again…. it will explain everything.

James is a fake name that was given to him when the real James fucking died and the king still needed a son to marry that hot piece of ass at that other kingdom so the 2 kingdoms could unite . Charming is a fucking nickname . The curse brought David back all the others who were renamed the name had some connection to their previous life grandma is granny, red is ruby, David is David, rumple is gold, snow is Mary Margaret (she used that as a fake name when they first met red and I’m getting bits and pieces of that wrong but I don’t care), Hook is Rodgers (yes I know that was a completely different curse from later on in the show it still fucking fits what I’m talking about), and more that I’m probably forgetting
