Tim and Steve, all the way from Steve's lounge room in Thai Muang. Somehow we ended up talking about Australian and favourite movies for much of the program. But we also express a few regrets and stories about moving to Thailand. We answer your questions as well.
Two different perspectives, two different people from two different backgrounds. But with plenty to say. Thinking of retiring in Phuket or Thailand? Want to know about living costs? Send us a question which we can answer next week to timnewtontoday@gmail.com
Link to Steve's KZbin channel....
/ @steverosse
You can watch last week's episode of Grumpy Old Men here...
• Grumpy Old Men - Thai ...
Tim Newton Today is a daily take on Thai and regional news and issues of interest to expats and foreign tourists.

Best advice of the program: You need to work on your happiness 👍 Indeed, as happiness is a journey, not a destination. Finding something to do? Yes.. working on happiness haha.. Doing something that doesn't make you happy won't help, and it doesn't matter what county you are living in!!

One of the best movies ever made in Australia: 'Wake In Fright' 1971 (released internationally as 'Outback'. Starring Gary Bond, Donald Pleasance ( both British). I was an extra on 'Good Morning Vietnam and latterly 'Casualties of War' Both movies involved scenes shot in and around Phuket and Phangna. I met the lead actors, Robin Williams in Good Morning and Sean Penn and Michael Fox in Casualties. Interesting days in the years: '86 , 87 and '88. Aussie movie 'Turtle Beach' was shot in Phuket town and Koh Siray, Lead actors were 'Jack Thompson, Joan Chen and Greta Stacchi . I actually got on camera in the 'goldfish bowl' nightclub scenes where Joan Chen was showing Greta Staachi some of Asia's realities! Shot in the Pearl Hotel Phuket! Great days!

Here's a topic for you to discuss: Thai humour. Individually Thais are wonderfully humorous people, frequently smiling or laughing, quick to appreciate a joke. But as represented in movies, TV shows etc - well, let's just say Thai humour doesn't travel very well. You could easily fill an episode with this topic, so many facets to it. Think of the potential for anecdotes... And don't forget to mention what a big no-no sarcasm is in Thailand. I'd love to hear the grumpy old men's take on all this.

What did they do to stop marriages to foreigners? They made changes to the OA visa but there were no changes to the nonimmigrant O visa. They added some new visas to attract wealthier expats. They have given over 3000 LTR visas since September. Not what they optimistically predicted but not nothing. Still it didn’t take away from the existing visas. And they also allowed many extensions to tourist visas throughout the Covid shutdown.
