Not quite true. Letterman was very much in the lead for his first two years of his CBS show. Leno dominated from the late 90's to the early 2000's but his ratings struggled during his 2nd Tonight show tenure where he often either trailed the competition or led by a razor thin margin. Letterman was very competitive at this time.

@@cornerofthemoon When Jay returned to "The Tonight Show" after Conan's resignation, he did struggle in the ratings as the top spot for a time was held by both Letterman, and even "Nightline." However, after a few months Jay's "Tonight Show" did regain the #1 position in late night, and (according to TV-By-The-Numbers) he was consistently winning in all key demographics to the end of his run in 2014. It drove Howard Stern crazy.

Letterman and Conan are so much hipper and funnier that Leno could ever hope to be. Amerikants think if someone is popular, like Taylor Swift or Leno, then it must be talent. Amerikants elected trump twice, that should tell you something, too.

Regarding ''When the time came, however, Leno didn't want to leave": Jay's planned retirement (slated for 2009) was being forced upon him by the deal *NBC* had made with Conan to take over "The Tonight Show." But when that time came, Jay not leaving was due to cold feet on the part of *NBC* because Conan's ratings at 12:35am had been slipping while Jay at 11:35pm was still consistently #1, and they feared losing Jay to *ABC.* 4:25 - "Jay told the network that he would no longer be cordial with his late night colleague": where did you hear this comment? Also, Conan was not paid to leave. *NBC* actually wanted him to stay as host of "The Tonight Show," but he chose to resign and take the buy-out package.

@@chriscampbell9207 Yeah, but I don't have Letterman grouped in with Conan and Kimmel, but would add Fallon to that group. Also Jack Parr and Steve Allen were very good. Paar was actually the one that initiated guest hosts which is how Carson got his foot in, Leno was also a guest host during the Carson era. Back when Carson took over the comparison of Paar to Carson, would have been like comparing Carson to Fallon. But I think most people today see Carson as the corner stone because they're not old enough to have ever seen Paar.

Since he called them Stupid, I've always wondered where those people he interviewed are nowadays?🤔 But him, funny? No! that's about it. Conan O'brien's Late Night was genuinely better, by far.
