Nonsense. Rick James was just as talented as Prince. Drugs affected Rick James earlier cutting his career short. Drugs just caught up to Prince later and took his life also. Rick James was one of Motown’s Senior most trusted producers. That was an honor in itself with as much talent Barry Gordy had at his disposal! Rick James was a much better singer than Prince unequivocally. Rick played several instruments just like Prince. Besides the Mary Jane Girls, Rick could out sing Prince any day with his far more powerful voice. Think of the duets he did with Teena Marie. Two great voices that made some memorable music together. Prince was a musical genius, as was Rick James. I honestly can’t say one was better than the other overall. They were both exceptional talents. Lastly don’t forget Rick James was once a part of the famous Group Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young, and James, before Rick went solo. Quick story. 🤗 My Dad, Mom and some others went to see Rick James. At that time, Prince opened for Rick. According to my father, Prince hadn't quite won over the mass appeal of man blacks. So, Prince wasn't enthusiastically welcomed. (Who the hell was this tiny, light skinned cat wearing bikini briefs, high heel boots and a grey trench coat?) Well, to make a long story short, Prince closed his set...walked off the stage and to my Dad's surprise, practically the entire venue/crowd was whistling, cheering and screaming for Prince!! He literally STOLE THE SHOW!! Rick walked out smoking a joint. No one cheering. Most of the crowd was actually leaving. Prince had worn out the crowd!! My Dad was drenched in sweat. "WOW!" That was all my Dad could say.
