As a mentally ill teenager (with depression and ADHD, so a very disorganized odd way of thinking) who also loves Kurt and did not want to overstep, I was conflicted for a year after receiving it as a gift, tho I found myself eventually reading through it and it makes me feel less alone I guess. Kurt and the band Nirvana were Satanists and when you don't fulfil your part of the deal with the company, you're worth more to them dead than alive. There's a lot more to this than what you'll here on KZbin. And by the way, all those grunge bands were Satanists as it was a Satanic movement. Kurt even got arrested for spraying grafitti on Church walls praising the antichrist and "God is gay." That's more than fcked up to me, that's twisted sick. He also used to hang baby dolls by their necks in nooses on the inside of his old touring van and his house. Kurt was a very twisted individual and he was heading the way of death a lot quicker than most.

I read his journals when I was 11 when I got it out of the library. Probably not appropriate reading material (like that infamous story about the disabled girl - his writing was so vivid that i could literally smell it), but it was strangely comforting because it felt like an adult was finally being candid with me for the first time in my life, and also that there was someone out there whose imagination was just as screwed up as mine. But now I would agree with Frances that it is an invasion of privacy, and if Kurt knew there were children reading his darkest thoughts and looking at drawings of unborn babies kicking through their mother's wombs etc I think he'd be appalled

Hmm, that's so interesting! The take is valid by Francis. I also think what's hard to digest is that art changes over time. As Jeff Buckley once said, the greatest songs have legs of their own and find themselves in the most interesting places. After an artist passes, it's tough to contend with this need for relevancy by releasing a deceased artist's unreleased works, seemingly as a cash campaign. I have never read Kurt's journals and probably never will unless it's forced in my face by media passing, but yeah. Great video! Much love and respect to the impartial coverage here!

I really don't believe dead people have the human ego like we do here to the point that he would be upset about it from the other side. If anything, he probably would see it from a higher perspective and how people could really learn from his struggles with unhealed trauma causing his mental health issues. In my personal belief and speculation, when a person passes away, intimate information about their life can be used for those of us still here to learn from, but I also am a person who believes in sharing a certain extent of intimate information while we are alive, so we can actually connect with each other other. in my pure speculation, maybe Frances just doesn't want to face the pain of the whole thing by reading the journals, and I'm sure it's tough that he is so famous and so many people are so interested in him, some to an unhealthy level.

I DID read Cobain's journals and there's no way in hell he would have ever published them, nor wanted them published. For many of us who read them, it took a voice of our generation and reduced him to someone with far less substance than most people had projected on him. I know that Cobain was far more than his pettiness, whining, and bitching throughout the notebooks, but I don't see how it didn't diminish his standing in the eyes of those who were expecting to read Coleridge-level contemplations. It was a sheer money grab to cobble together every piece of paper Kurt ever wrote on and release it along with the greatest hits album.

I think the reason many would not support buying it is to not support Courtney making money off it. A more tasteful thing though still not ideal woulda been his estate to auction off the original and have the buyer sign a contract to not have it published and any resale to include that same contract. As memorabilia like that, people would ofc be interested in it. But at the end of the day, journals are meant to be private. Though some stories deserve to be told such as Anne Frank. Kurt, we didn't need to read his journal because he was a public figure, so we knew his public story and even a lot about his private life already.

YOU are the reason that his daughter understands why Courtney is still trying to push Kurt to control his legacy! And FFS, Courtney Love HAS a ton of money! She doesn't want more money or attention or whatever it is you think she does-she was dating Billy Corgan when she wrote her breakthrough album, and he's admitted to being the ass wipe in that relationship many times. Courtney just wants to give Kurt more life, more chances-he was miserable, he'd already tried to kill himself twice that year, he went AWOL from rehab, his friends were as strung out as he was, and he really, truly wanted to die months ago. Why would his wife cover up his suicide attempt that put him in a coma only 3 wks earlier so she could murder him when he'd been openly trying to die for months but no one would let him, even though they knew the moment he was alone, he was gone? Honestly, I am glad to have read and own the journals... mind-set wise "thankfully I wasn't the only one" to have suffered in thoughts. I think it depends who's reading it, and how much they will be able to relate to what he expresses in his journals. As someone else has already posted in the comments, reading what Kurt expresses can help some people going through similar things to feel less alone. As someone who only became interested in Kurt and Nirvana 3 years ago, I purchased a copy second hand, and for me it shows both the thought processes and emotional process that he went through, out of which his art and his songs emerged. I don't think that necessarily detract from his artistic work - it can be helpful to other artists to see how his artistic work was born out of these inner processes. And given his ambivalence about fame, maybe he would appreciate it if reading his journals enables people to understand he was also human and flawed, rather than being forever elevated to a super human legendary rock icon. And it's still only what Kurt chose to actually write down in those moments. Still not necessarily his innermost thoughts and feelings. And who he is as a divine sentient being is beyond his words his art, and his personality in any case.

And I was feeling I respected the person who wrote it and the information itself, too. I wasn't able to read it immediately. I haven't read the whole book since then. But I love one story by Kurt. He describes he and Krist were at some another band rehearsal and they had just bought new equipment."Didn't impressed at all." But then Kurt noticed a left handed guitar 196... . So he "started asking quietly" about the guitar and the band's members agreed to sell it. But of course Krist helped to buy it at a lower price. I absolutely love that episode. When we write something on paper, we simply cannot ignore the fact that it might be seen, someday. Now... Was it good or bad to publish it-? Both, I think. It can teach people a lot, open their eyes on certain things, facets of life, and being a popular artist. Plus it's always interesting, getting to understand one's behaviour, patterns, thoughts... But then, if indeed he only wanted his things to go to his family, and didn't want his journals to be seen by the public... It'd be quite bad to have released it all.

I think that reading through a journal of someone that's still alive without their consent is an extreme invasion on privacy and is only done by disgusting and sleazy degenerates. On the other hand, reading through a journal of a dead person can be healing and can bring us closure, appreciation and understanding. It might be fascinating to learn how other individuals mere operating deep inside and this can lead to self improvement. This kind of personal thoughts may also act as a mirror that confronts us with ourselves, the way we see the world and how comment on it. In the end its a personal choice, in this case it depends on ones approach to the content of this book. It is out there and hopefully people who read it, do it to better themselves without judgement.

I was gifted the journal long time ago. None of it ever made me think ill of the man. Did not and will not ever change the kindred feelings i have for him. Youthful angst. A bit crass. Whoever in here isnt a walking contradiction at times can cast the first stone and say it diminishes anything from my dear fellow. Voicing a big to-do about it only makes it stick out all the more, unfortunately. I feel for her and kinda wish she didnt say a word with regard the whole thing. indelible lesson, perhaps. Bless her heart. Hope she is doing okay considering Peace and Love

He would have released some, but he made a point that some similar telling was an invasion.

I agree with Francis. It's a total invasion of his privacy 😢

Because he took his own life, as an influential figure...it is constructive for impressionable fans to read record of his personality so people can contextualize, in case there was foul play or if he had clinical personality struggle traits, even as important as privacy is

Heard of this book hasn’t read it doesn’t think I will can say I do have the Cobain Unseen book which seems cool few neat items in there but again i’m not sure if it’s great owning much like his journals etc

People bash Courtney no matter what, but I don't think that she was trying to "cash in". I think she just realizes that there are many super-fans who want to know more more more, and have lots of questions. Releasing Kurt's journals was a way to feed their interests and provide insight to the man they have such an interest in.

I've already commented "I WOULD NOT READ IT PERIOD" the thoughts in the journals are what became the music we all came to love. He didn't have to give us that. His beautiful little girl, who he loved and adored, is the only person who should be privileged to that part of him. She won't read them out of respect for his privacy. To be so selfish and self entitled that you read it somehow improve your life? Playing keyboard psychiatrist won't help him. It won't bring him back so you can fix him. This beautiful young woman has had her life put on display and her privacy invaded to much. Please let her keep some part of him to herself. How do you think Kurt would feel about her mistreatment?? PLEASE leave her privacy and her memories of her daddy alone.
@Emily_Charley20 күн бұрын
Yeah totally agree, if his own daughter wants it private it should remain private. Courtney did it as a cash grab for sure as Dave and Krist wouldn't get a cent from it, yet she fought thek in court for years over the release of tue you know you're right song. It was all about the money not what kurt would have wanted at all. And she definitely didn't think how Frances felt about it

I wrote and published my own book entitled "How To Avoid A Future Life, Somewhere In The Crowd" on Trafford Press. He & I were very similar except my closet friend died of a opiate overdose. I just want everybody to know that NO ONE can really know a person & what they might be capable of. the thing is that you love them once & can continue to love for the rest of YOUR life. Roll with the changes....

I think it's a invasion of privacy kurt was I think sadly didn't know him but he was very protective of his privacy maybe the only thing he had control of frances bean cobain is very articulate and very intelligent just like her dad ❤

I admit that I own the diary. But I have never read any of the entries. Aside from looking at the comic strips and some of the artwork that's in it I can't read his journal entries that I can't do.... Kurt has been my hero since I was 5. And now Im a songwriter and a musician, I owe a lot to Kurt.and nirvana. Sorry I went off on a tangent but there's so many misconceptions about him as a person which adds to that allure.

ive never read it, dont care to. i think Kurt give all of himself through his music, it was magical and intense and it captured that moment in time exactly, he was a perfect conduit for my generation ✌️💚 and who tf would have thought Kurt Cobains daughter would've fell in love and married Tony Hawks son, that shits perfect, lol, the children of the two biggest icons of the 90s. what a trip.

Once an artist has achieved success they loose their fear of financial stability which was a crucial element of their creative process. Ins important to their continued success to cause them unrest by things like invading their privacy. They need some forms of discomfort ya know

I remember when that came out and a guy I knew bought it. I glanced through it and determined this should not be read. I totally get wanting to know everything KC but some things are best left private. Maybe wait till everyone in it or connected to him are dead. She didn't want the letter he had in his wallet when he killed himself released, so why this?
@watchchimp310218 күн бұрын
I could understand why people might be upset about it. I haven't read them, and I'm not sure if I ever will? But, on the other hand, I think if people, anyone, is putting pen to paper and not being very intentional with concealing them. Then I think there's an understanding that at some point it's going to become public record. If Kurt didn't want them to be read posthumously, I'm sure he would have burned them or something. I would never defend Courtney's motives or actions in any way, and sometimes, her thought process is a bit schizophrenic. But, she is well aware of Kurt's god-like status and devotion of his fans because she's on the receiving end of their judgment many times. I think maybe she wanted to shortcircuit that by bringing a little bit of reality into the picture so fans could see him as a person and relate to him on a more personal level. I just think about the millions of school kids who read Anne Franks' diaries, and nobody seems particularly conflicted about it! 🤷♂️

How old was his daughter when this book was released? Also, “putting it on paper is permanent” and the same goes for digital print, and i’m sure he knew that, so it’s interesting to hear someone else state he wanted them read that knew him. We also don’t know what he stated in his will and trust.
@justatitle14 күн бұрын
Anytime you put something on paper you have exposed your thoughts already. If he had something to hide would he write it? Would anyone write it? And not throw it away quickly!? Diary’s have locks, do folders? Personally I wouldn’t read it, but I think people will write intimate thoughts because they need to express themselves or die. I think deep down they want others to know who they are. I won’t judge anyone who reads them. I won’t judge Courtney, she knew him best. His daughter wants him to herself, as she should.

Everyone is entitled to their thoughts.Being as famous as Kurt was his privacy should be guarded.What he wrote in the book is his ,and his alone.I never read it,and never will. I do however; recommend the book “Family Values” Fantastic photos of Kurt,Courtney,and baby Frances Bean.

Would be difficult to look at those photos knowing what Courtney ended up doing to Kurt. He didn't do it himself. With the amount of Opioids in his blood, it would have literally been impossible for him to do it.
