Modified Gruul has been my favorite aggro deck since NEO released because it tends to produce a lot of tough sequencing decisions like at 12:33 where you have to puzzle out the precise order that will get the opponent to exactly zero life.

This has a lot of similarities to my Gruul aggro I've been honing for months. Upriser is an interesting card I've not considered and would be perfect with a card that has to be included: Audacity. Usually I play Iconoclast for the haste and trample, both relevant. Suggest Simulacrum in lieu of Hot Springs, which give two counters at once AND be a body AND unearth/haste, all great synergy with rest of deck. Flare is just okay, but 2 mana is a very pricey removal spell for aggro, so I prefer Tail Swipe which with the scaling creatures kills everything usually. A few Tyvar's Stand are irreplaceable tempo cards and can save your best modified creature and cash in on the investment.

My problem with G/R is that it has no answer to boardwipes. Boardwipes are the most brutal and powerful method of removal. One card and some life(presumably because the attacker got a few attacking turns in) wipes out all the progress and cards of the opponent. One Farewell will even remove the graveyard so that green can't use Shigeki type affects. Its the same with mono red, but mono red is so obnoxiously fast that if by the sixth turn if a mono red deck hasn't won, it isn't doing its job. And for a really good mono red deck, they might even get you by the fourth turn before you can play a depopulate. But your deck seems pretty fast, so i think its cool. Great job making it, it does look fun.

Yeah this deck gets stomped by mono black - one obliterator and it’s over - no way to deal with it t4 and not enough mana or permanents to go toe to toe with it

@@samp6113 yeah its too much of a weakness. The other person was correct that not every deck does everything, but I agree with you that the downside of mono red or gruul is bigger than the downside of other combinations like grixis or esper.

I gotta say I probably love gruul the most. There’s nothing quite like curving out and turning things sideways. Sad that gruul is pretty weak right now.. Currently playing a version based on LVD’s turn4 rex using lukka. A pure aggro version I’m sure will be even more fun. But I’m running low on wildcards so maybe another time :)

Rending Flame for Sheoldred. Bankbuster is good in grindy matchups and still has excellent synergy with Kodama. Thrun for monoblue and decks with spot removal. Lukka can also help vs control giving you a more resilient threat. Can also include more cheap removal like Play with Fire, Strangle and Brotherhood’s End vs aggro. There’s always the danger of oversideboarding and diluting the creature synergies too much.

Love the deck and the idea of a modified deck theme. I am not a big fan of invigorating hot spring though, I just feel like there's a plethora of better 3 drops you could be playing over it.

Hot Spring performed quite well in the games, but has to be played in moderation since you don’t want to draw multiples.

While testing the deck the red matchup felt quite good. Both decks have a similar plan, but Gruul just goes a little bit bigger. Doesn't mean you can't lose, especially when Monored is on the play, but a three mana 4/4 goes a long way.

Aggro decks on the play are so obnouxious and oppressive. Mono Red and Gruul players need really take a second and reflect their life decisions.

Every deck has a substantial advantage on the play. It's just most obvious with aggro because it's more common than combo and the game doesn't end immediately when control stabilizes (i.e.: has effectively won).
