Biggest thing I’ve learned lately (unfortunately from an IRL situation) is that if someone gives you a creepy feeling, even if you can’t point to any specific reasons or give any examples why, trust that feeling. There are many different things I can add, but the bottom line is trust your gut … every time.

Yes!! If someone makes you uncomfortable, if there’s a ‘red flag’ warning, whatever …. pay attention and trust that. We have all kinds of ways of telling someone isn’t safe that we don’t consciously recognize. We get all kinds of clues from body language, the way people use their eyes, subtle changes in tone of voice, the way someone says something, the words they choose, etc.. We notice all of these things subconsciously and they let us know whether someone is safe or not. Trust that if you feel uncomfortable or creeped out, you’re absolutely right to feel that way and walk away, make yourself safe, tell someone, anything you need to do to protect yourself! We have these intuitions or feelings because they are survival skills and have kept people alive for thousands of years. Also, be aware that ANYone can be creepy - authority figures, mentors, teachers, doctors, pastors, therapists, etc.. Sadly, there are a lot of icky people out there. Be safe y’all!

As a mom, I do judge the parents. We know when something's off, we really do. No excuses at all. Most of those parents knew and either did nothing cause their kids were bringing $$$ to the table, or they were just irresponsible and neglectful.

As a mother of a 5 year old. I’m there with you. when men tell me how beautiful my daughter is or repeat it. I’m like ok what the fuck!!You told me once already. So that intuition feeling is spot on. There are pedos everywhere. We need to start a campaign called “SAVE OUR CHILDREN!”.

Yeah I agree. I feel bad for Drake Bell’s father. He did everything he was supposed to do to protect his son only to be overridden by the mom. He told her not to leave their son alone with that man and she did because she didn’t want to drive him places. wtf?! Also, Amanda Bynes’ parents are disgusting to me. She spent hours a day locked in an office with an adult man. No wonder she’s so messed up.

I totally agree. I do judge the parents for putting their children in this situation for financial gain. We see it happening more and more on TikTok as well with these TikTok influencer moms, who are basically pawning their children off to pedos online.

Yess! I just commented the same thing practically! I will most definitely judge someone who doesn't put their kids needs and safety above all! In this day of social media it's so sad and infuriating to see these parents putting their kids out there in skimpy clothes shaking their butts and doing suggestive things in order to make $ and gain some followers. I only have people I know in real life on my profiles and I still am very careful of what I post of my children. There's are too many sickos in this world!

My co-workers and I were talking about this the other day; how EVERY SINGLE top level industry we grew up watching other kids in: Hollywood / TV, Gymnastics, Music Industry, AND religious organizations have been exposed for abuse. I envied these children and teens growing up, thinking they were so lucky, and behind the scenes they were going through unimaginable abuse. Our eyes are being opened 😢

When I was a little girl, I think I was 6, I was "discovered" and offered modeling gigs. I also grew up in the 90s and wanted to be a Disney kid SO BAD. But my mom said no way. She didn't tell me why then, but as an adult, she shared that she was terrified that something like this would happen to me. I was so devastated at 6, but now I am so, so thankful. I feel like she shielded me from a bullet. I can't even watch these documentaries because that could have been me.

When I was 5 I did some modeling for tv commercials. The only one I actually remember was a chicken nugget commercial and hated doing it, but at least my mom was with me. Well, one day a car came by the house to pick me up to do another commercial. It was a scheduled pickup with one of the assistants who was supposed to escort me for the modeling work. I threw a fit and refused to go because my mom (and no other family members) could go with me that time. I had always been told to never get into a car with strangers yet my family expected me to get in car with strangers. Even at 5 years old I knew it was wrong to let a child go off with strangers. Thankfully I didnt have to go fiilm that commercial and my mom apologized to me, now in my 30s, recently when I was talking to her about it. She said she should have known better as the parent that that would have been a bad idea.

It was worse in the 80s with the Coreys (Haim and Feldman). And when they said what had happened to them and nobody believed them, it hurt me. And then, Corey Haim died. I cried so much. How is it that what happened in Hollywood to them in the 80s was known, but nobody remembered when Nickelodeon was full blown in the 90s with kids? I have 3 kids, and I was a victim of SA, and I protected my 3 babies so much..... still do.

That documentary is so upsetting. To think of those children suffering through all that abuse while having to play a role where they're smiling and happy. I can not wrap my mind around how the parents did not do more to protect them. I have 2 daughters, if a man ever sent my child pics like that I would go on a rampage! I would have to make sure he was locked up so that I didn't end up in prison myself. I feel like the parents just saw their kids as paychecks, they ignored all the signs because the money rollin in.

The kicker is the people who hire these PDOs know what they are and STILL hire them to work with kids! It’s disgusting!!! Adults in the industry have kept quiet because of worrying about their careers. So I’m not surprised so many parents kept quiet. They would be going up against powerful people and probably wouldn’t have been believed. It’s a horrible system and no protections are in place for people. Cash changes hands and silence happens.

that’s the same thing I was thinking. In the film industry you can get blacklisted extremely easy and will never (or very unlikely) to get another job in that industry. I imagine a lot of parents were worried that their kid would be blacklisted if they reported it and then they would have an extremely hard time getting another job. Especially since a lot of these parents were relying on the money their kid would make. It’s absolutely disgusting and heartbreaking

I just did a training about breaking down misconceptions and understanding the facts of sexual abuse. A key aspect is knowing the signs of an abuser grooming a child AND the “gatekeepers” (parents, teachers, etc.). Abusers are most commonly someone the victim knows and trusts. It’s scary! I encourage people to learn more about this and learn about the warning signs to help protect the kids in your lives.

I grew up in the generation you speak of, where people didn’t talk about abuse, name it, and there was accountability, consequences and change. I was one of the kids who adults didn’t protect when they knew I was in the presence of a predator. I’m still working of forgiving those adults, who are my aunts and uncles. My grandfather abused all of his granddaughters and one grandson, that I know of. He also abused his wife and children, and even assaulted his son’s wife. This man is a horrible human and deserved to be in jail. My aunts and uncles knew this was happening, and just told him to stop, as if that works. They didn’t take any action of protect us. I have 50 cousins in that family, so we are talking a lot of people impacted by his dark black evil heart. I’m 55 now, and I do have understanding that my grandfather lived through two wars, in Europe, was in Siberia etc. He lived trauma I’ll never comprehend. So I understand why he was a broken human. So who do I be mad at? Him? War? This is the consequence of evil in the world. This is how family trauma happens. If my grandfather hadn’t lived through war would he have been abusive? Then go back another step, who are the people who are responsible for war? Then go back another step, who hurt the people who chose war? This is how trauma works. So how am I healing? I’m responsible for me, my actions, and how I treat people around me. I wasn’t able to have children, so I haven’t contributed to the trauma of another child because of my own. The only way these cycles will change is if the damaged adults take responsibility for their own trauma, and learn who they are as a result, and change any behavior that isn’t healthy. I feel for all those kids, and I’m grateful that parents now are more reactive and protective of their children than parents were back then. The way this has manifested in my life, isn’t that I act out in any unhealthy way, it’s that I abandon myself. I learned I couldn’t ask questions, didn’t have voice, didn’t have autonomy, that I had to allow people in my life I didn’t feel safe with, I abandon my boundaries with people pleasing. My trauma shows up by hurting myself. I’m very happy to report, I’ve done so much work in just understanding myself, my perceptions and ideas, learning why I do, say or think things, challenging my own self hatred with my own truth. One of the biggest things I still need to work on is being ok with someone being angry. If someone is mistreating me, I say it out loud, and they are angry, that’s ok. Let them be angry. If there is no healthy discussion about mutual respect and boundaries, then they aren’t safe for me. I don’t believe in writing off people with trauma as hopeless, but I will challenge things to see if they are healing or working on it, or have awareness of their behavior. And if they fail the challenge, that’s ok, I will just try to exit quietly. Great discussion Kathleen!

Millions of people go to war, have trauma or live their lives in hell and they are not abusers. There's no evil in the world, evil is inside every one of us, it is up to us how do we behave. So if someone does something like your grandfather did, that person is the only one responsible.

Love your compassion Kathleen, makes me want to sit down and have a coffee with you so we can talk and cry about all the crazy things in this world. As a GenX that hit my teenage years in the 90’s I can tell you that it was one hell of a fun era too, we were not all neglected latchkey kids. I had parents that would not have sent me off with a stranger. Very grateful for that now. This is heartbreaking. And complete bullshit that we can’t call pedophilia for what it is or even say the word on social media. Absolute nonsense.

I grew up when it was just out. “Dare” and “Double Dare” were my fav shows. I did see all the 90’s shows as well. It kills me that the parents were so afraid of what was going to be said about them and their kids. How nobody spoke up. I think because we grew up in those times we are more hyper-vigilant about our surroundings and our kids. I have trust issues and many more issues 😢. It’s mind blowing how many actors defended and BLAMED Drake for what happened to him. I looked up to some of them. It was a hard let down. I’m still crying about all the hurt the kids went through.

Quiet on set completely destroyed me. I grew up around the same time as you and adored the Amanda Show (& of course Drake and Josh, Zoey 101, etc) and after this documentary I will not watch another Nickelodeon show/episode again. My heart breaks for every child who went through this and were failed by their parents and the system they worked for.

As another 90s kid who also grew up watching all of these shows in nickelodean, it was very tough to watch. It was as if you were finding out that friends from your childhood were struggling while making you laugh every week. I am glad people are coming out with their stories to bring awareness to something that has been so hushed up for so long. Enjoyed your perspective on the doc! PS-Love the look!

Yeah as an expecting mom I’m learning from all this stuff. Never let fear prevent you from speaking up. Go to bat for your kids. If you ever have to, you have to be a freaking stone wall between them and anyone who could hurt them. There is no “too involved” when it comes to protecting your kids from bad people.

You were 100% on point about everything you said about the documentary. I couldn't understand the mom who didn't go to the cops. and i loved how Drake's dad did his best to prevent what happened. It makes glad to see that not all 90's parents were just scumbags to not protect their kids on tv. I had to even tell my husband that Amanda Bynes is a great story of how early fame just destroyed her later in life.

I have an infant, and as a mom I cried with Papa Bell. To know what was going to happen and no one protected his son, I can see all the pain in his eyes. I cannot imagine how parents thought it was okay back then to trust their kids with these strangers, but unfortunately money will always be more important 😔 every single child deserves to be protected and have a non-traumatic childhood.

I just watched that last weekend with my daughter who is around your age and we were sickened by it too. If something like that had happened to my kids, I would have lost my mind! I would have gone after them hard. We need to stand up against this as a society instead of letting it become normalized. SICK.

I haven't watched Quiet on Set but I totally feel you because I watched the videos with Alyson Stoner talking about this industry. I was crying listening to her and that is probably mild compared to what is in Quiet on Set. I definitely feel that parents need to be there watching their own kids and protecting them! Don't trust other people to have their best interests at heart as you would as their parent!
