No, they crash because the riders exceeded their skill level. The GS is a very stable bike. Almost too stable. It gives you a false sense of confidence. With bars and equipment, they can reach 270 kg. That's a lot of mass to throw around in the dirt.

I don't think there is a specific reason... this is just a collection of when it happens, you don't see the many many many times it doesn't happen :) and it depends on driver skills, asphalt, bike condition etc etc...

the lack of ground clearance on the angle is a trap for those used to normal motorcycles

partially true, at the end the lean angle is a little bit more than 40*, that with this type of bike is fairly enough. More than that, pedals are lower than engine, so you have an advice before touching with the engine... at the end, the most important part of the bike is the rider.... it's up to his experience and skills. If you don't have them, every bike has its own traps.

Not sure of the incident but the one were the bike ends up in the oncoming lane in a blind bend the other bike done the right thing in riding beyond the bend where they probably set about warning oncoming traffic and therefore preventing a more serious accident.

The log crossing was brave but unwise... Most of the rest were just odd. A lot of folk who ride these land whales would have benefitted from a few years riding light, responsive MotoX or enduro machines before graduating to two-wheeled industrial earthmovers. I may be wrong... BTW, I loved the nose-heavy landing from the jump. Not clear whether the rider held on there... I rather hope he/she did. Chapeau for the sheer chutzpah of trying.

I really think that the driver is much more important than bike. Obviously it is not a 100kg dirt bike, but you can do a lot with it. And if you are not a good driver on dirt, you fail also with the 100kg bike. You just do much less damages... :)

ahah I never understand those who say "superior"... at the end, the first and most important component of the bike is: the rider. If you have skills and experience, you can ride every bike at its maximum. If you have lack of them, you fall even with a baby bike :)

We had a guy with no off-road experience take his 1200gs for a 2500km ride thru Northern Canada, he did quite well. It's not a bad bike.. a bit pricey for my blood though

@@0xsergy ciao 0xsergy, that's the point at the end. You can do a lot with this bike, taking into account its price. It is not perfect for off-roading, and if you plan to have a lot of off-road for sure the K790 or even the AT1000 is better, but at the end you can do off-road, you can do travel, you can do a lot of things with it

@@LukeMoonlight Africa twin requires a fork upgrade for off-road use, stock forks literally shave the inside of the tube due to flex. 790 is okay.. if you're lucky and don't have locktite blocking your clutch oil passage port. And even then the 790 has an undersized clutch so you gotta be very careful in slow going terrain about burning it up.

@@0xsergy got it, I knew the fork issue for AT, was not aware of that issue with the 790... anyway they are bike you can also travel with. Did you try the 690R? I wonder if it could fit my need, to have an off-road bike I can use also to reach the off-road area with 70km of normal streets

Ciao Lee, it's the "range" of all those bikes, from K1290 to Tiger1200 to Ducati 1260. To be honest, they are not perfect nor the best in any condition, street, racetrack, offroad, but you can do well in all those situations and still enjoy the ride. I use it all around, from off to long travel. Best solution... would be to have a garage with 8 bikes, and I know perfectly which ones... but I can't afford them, so I use this for all the 8 tasks :)
