I'm surprised I didn't find it in the first few comments, but removing the coolant line is unnecessary if you're NOT doing the starter. If you're doing your knock sensors, the wiring harness to those, or your intake gaskets, you won't need to remove the coolant line, as you won't need to remove the bridge on the back of the starter where the coolant lines come in from the backside of the motor. I'm battling a knock sensor code problem in my '04 GS430, I've taken the intake apart and put it back together three god damn times now LOL! So trust me, you don't have to remove the throttle body or the bridge over the back of the starter to get the intake manifold off. I just used a short bungee cord to hold my throttle body to the side (drivers side) and out of my way when I was working on the intake. The only thing that gets in the way when removing the intake is the fuel line on the driver's side and the bracket with a plug on it on the passenger side. Take that bracket and just tuck it on the fuel rail or something so it'll come out with the intake manifold. You might need a helping hand to help swing that fuel line on the driver's side under the wiring harness though, that joker kept getting hung up on me when I was pulling the intake by myself, but I eventually made it work inch by inch, very gently LMAO!!

thanks for the video, was able to replace my knock sensors for my GS430 and everything was on point. it was the first time i ever did anything this complex in my life. for my case, i didn't remove coolant hose on the throttle body, so didnt need to drain coolant. i also didnt remove the heater hoses or banjo fittings either, i disconnected the fuel line and left the banjo fittings attached to the manifold (i used 14mm and 19mm line wrenches so i didn't round the bolts [be careful of some fuel in the lines and some pressure as well]). it made things a bit harder to work around when pulling off the manifold and putting it back on, but i thought it have saved some time for my case. thanks again for everything!

Hey, I got slammed this week with a P0325 Knock sensor code. 2001 Gs430. Congratulations on fixing yours 👍. Can i ask you how long approximately did it take you and did you need a second person to help? Im debating whether I should pay my mechanic or do it myself. I’m a little handy myself, but not as skilled as a mechanic by any stretch.
@nitroidd
@nitroidd Жыл бұрын
@@Chin-dian Hey there! It took me about 6 hrs to do, but I was really taking my time and ensuring I wasn't going to strip any bolts, crack any hoses, and so on. I did it myself without a second person lifting the manifold out but it was pretty tough and hope you're familiar with good deadlifting technique so you don't throw your back out. It did require specialized tools and planning like I mentioned above, and even then I also had a tough time. This is one of those that I would say you might take to a mechanic because of the complexity. I needed to do it myself because I was unemployed at the time and couldn't afford the labor

1999 Lexus Ls400 V8 I have a P0171 running lean, I sprayed brake cleaner and found the leak behind the manifold where the starter is located. I’m not 100% sure if it’s the intake manifold gasket or a hose since it’s behind the intake where the heater hose is and I can’t see back there. Do you believe I should still replace the intake gasket?
@HelpingHandAutoRepair
@HelpingHandAutoRepair 3 жыл бұрын
Heater hoses won’t cause lean codes. If there are any vacuum hoses behind the manifold, you can try spraying around those hoses and see if you have a leak there. It wouldn’t surprise me that your intake manifold gaskets are bad.

@michaelbarnett2077

Thanks for making the video! I have a 2000 Tundra with the 2UZ-FE, I have been getting a P0171 bank 1 too lean code, a slightly low rough idle when in gear and now the engine has started making this loud whistling/squealing sound at idle. If I rev the engine the noise stops for a second and when the engine returns to idle it comes back. The noise seems to start after the engine is warmed up. Do you think this could mean a bad intake manifold gasket?
@HelpingHandAutoRepair
@HelpingHandAutoRepair 3 жыл бұрын
It very well could be. However usually intake manifold gaskets leak while cold and then seal a little better while warmed up. This isn’t to say that it couldn’t happen. A quick way to test for intake leaks or in the case of these cars also is fuel injector o rings. Get some carb cleaner, spray it around the base of the intake manifold and around where the injectors are seated while the engine is running. This is how I found where the leak was coming from on this engine. It was a combination of bad intake manifold gaskets and a bad set of injector o rings on one cylinder (I replaced them all) If the engine stumbles or starts idling worse wherever you spray it at, you have found the vacuum leak.
@michaelbarnett2077
@michaelbarnett2077 3 жыл бұрын
@@HelpingHandAutoRepair Thank you for the reply! I am going to dig in and replace the intake gasket and check out the injector o-rings while I'm in there.
@HelpingHandAutoRepair
@HelpingHandAutoRepair 3 жыл бұрын
Well if you want to save yourself some time, you could try spraying carb cleaner around both sides of the intake like I stated above. If nothing changes, then start spraying other possible vacuum leak sources. Like the intake tubes, vacuum lines etc.. any AFTER the mass airflow sensor. Since you have a lean code, it doesn’t necessarily always mean intake Manifold gaskets (although it’s likely) it can also be a slow responding upstream o2 sensor.
@michaelbarnett2077
@michaelbarnett2077 3 жыл бұрын
@@HelpingHandAutoRepair I really appreciate you replying. I will do that with the carb cleaner. It's the LOUD whistling sound that is hard to pinpoint that is there at idle but goes away as soon as the throttle is opened, which makes me think of a vacuum leak. I have inspected all the vacuum hoses closely and replaced the PCV valve. The intake manifold gasket has that black plastic spacer thing with two gaskets either side and I can visually see that it is cracked in one location where there is a bolt, the previous owner has been in to do the starter before, so I'm thinking he used a cheap gasket. I have OEM Toyota gaskets to go in. The injector o-rings all look dry rotted as well, so its probably time for that.
@michaelbarnett2077
@michaelbarnett2077 3 жыл бұрын
@@HelpingHandAutoRepair Turns out it was the intake manifold gasket. I keep in contact with the previous owner, and he had taken the intake off to change the starter and used ACdelco gaskets when he put it back on, one of these had failed and cracked in at least 3 places around one of the cylinders. I did do the carb cleaner, and it did confirm around the cylinder that the gasket was cracked in multiple places. The job is much much easier on a Tundra than the car you were working on! I didn't have to drain coolant or undo any coolant lines. I unbolted the throttle body and left it in the car instead of taking it out with the intake manifold. I used genuine Toyota gaskets.
@joshjohnson8571
@joshjohnson8571 Жыл бұрын
Hey! If these gaskets are bad, that could be causing a vacuum leak which could cause a lowerish idle and an audible sucking noise while the car is running, right?
@HelpingHandAutoRepair
@HelpingHandAutoRepair Жыл бұрын
It’s possible yes. Fast and easy way to check that is with some brake cleaner. On this car you could hear a pretty loud intake vacuum leak towards the back of the intake. So I sprayed some brake cleaner back at the base of the intake manifold and sure enough the idle stumbled (indicating a vacuum leak) every single time I sprayed it there.
