I've had these same MRE ration packs when I was at Canadian Air Force Trenton Base. I'm with the Army cadets of Canada and I've come across these videos and they bring back memories. We were never allowed to bring back rations to the barracks however alot of cadets hid them in their suitcases.
@jeff-vm7wk8 жыл бұрын
We also had solider fuels included in the kit. Everyone would want to collect those soldier fuels. The second most collected was powders. If you combined all of the powders we called it Jesus juice.
@gschultz98 жыл бұрын
That's very interesting. So they actually gave you Meal Kit Supply MREs in the cadets? Did they ever give you any IMPs?
@tanory078 жыл бұрын
These are civillian MREs so I doubt you did
@jeff-vm7wk8 жыл бұрын
+gschultz9 no imp's. They would cut the bags and take out the cadets warming package, meal and side meal, then they would boil it. We are these breakfast, lunch and dinner. They would hand us the empty bags, tell us to take our covers out and carry our food to the table. We had powders, the coffee and snacks were all included in the bag.

My MRE's just arrived yesterday. I am so looking forward to your reviews on all of them. Very nice review on this one. I also agree that the tropical punch is an odd flavor for a breakfast meal... but like you said... having a variety is always nice. Also having the option to open a different one up and swap out the drink with this one and or just save it for later too... that is what makes MRE's nice. You don't have to eat everything that comes in the package with that meal. You can save it for on the trail later or mix them up the way you like them!

I remember how excited you were to try fresh civilian MREs when you got that case from XMRE last year, and this year is starting out with MKS. I am still hoping you will open a ration from each that has the same entree to do a comparison. I bet the guys already in the field are liking the switchup on some menu items. Thanks for the review as always!!
@gschultz99 жыл бұрын
+marshallhippie Thank you marshallhippie! That's a good idea about doing a direct comparison between XMRE and MKS. I don't have any XMREs at the moment, but I might consider doing that. And it's true, when I first got some commercial MREs direct from the companies I was pretty excited--as I never seemed to be able to get genuine MREs that were anywhere near as fresh.

I just have checked with my Meal kit Supply box, Canadian ones are still the not up to date as yours. ours are still using the meal kit supply FRH and menu No.9 is Pork sausage patty, Hash browns with bacon. i guess Canadian Meal Kit Supply is still catching up!
@rockyraab82909 жыл бұрын
The hash browns certainly look more appetizing than past versions did. Thumbs up for that. The word that sprung to mind for the wheat snack bread was "underdone" when you described it. I also noticed that all the products were by SOPAKCO. It will be interesting to see if the other MKS meals are likewise because of all the military suppliers, I think SOPAKCO does the best job with MREs and TOTMs. Great job again, G-Man.

You know what they need to put more of in MREs? Beef jerky. When I was in the Navy, I only HAD to eat an MRE one time and I noticed that right away. The First Strike Rations seem to be a step in the right direction with things you dont need to heat up, but I guess sometimes you want a hot meal. More jerky, and more "sandwich" type products that dont taste bad.
@gschultz99 жыл бұрын
+Jimmy Russels Now that you mention it, it does kind of surprise me that we don't see more jerky or jerky-type snacks in MREs. They seem like the perfect thing for a little hand-held snack that gives a little extra protein. They have put jerky snacks in, but it doesn't seem to be a regular thing. I almost wonder if they felt like people would feel it was too much of a "typical" thing to put into a long-term storage food and intentionally tried to avoid using too much of it.
@Spudst3r8 жыл бұрын
+gschultz9 Probably good they don't. The nitrites in processed meats, particularly in heavily cured meats like jerky, are suspected to be the culprit behind why these types of meats have been found to be Group 1 carcinogens.
@bakuya998 жыл бұрын
Its been awhile but i had a few MRE's awhile ago that had beef jerky type product in them they were decent but a tad bland.
@bloodgamer13128 жыл бұрын
well jerky is pretty salty. Maybe they think it will dehydrate the troops?
@bakuya998 жыл бұрын
The Favorite Gentleman I believe its the cost factor they have to deal with. Jerky itself is fairly expensive for a decent sized bag and you only get so much of it. The rations i did have that did contain jerky was caffeine infused.

Really gonna have to try this one! I always enjoy putting the snack bread in the heater with the entree to give it that "fresh" warm bread type of taste. I would probably hold back with an entree like this though, I'd want it to get all the heat it can lol.

What is your opinion on the best MRE supplier: XMRE Mealkitsupply FirstStrike Just wondering. I've looked over all those websites and most offerings are not that attractive. I had K and C rations in VietNam. I notice that the modern rations don't have toilet paper, which was much appreciated I the 70's.
@gschultz98 жыл бұрын
First off, I should mention that genuine military MREs DO still include the little toilet paper packs--just like the old days! The commercial ones just give you a napkin. I haven't heard of First Strike as a supplier of commercial MREs. First Strike Rations, which DO look a lot like a commercial product, are actually genuine government-issue items. Between XMRE and Meal Kit Supply I have a tough time recommending one. They're both good products at a similar price point (kind of high), but they do have subtle differences between them. Meal Kit Supply is the only commercial MRE that actually gives you a side dish along with a main entree (like you'd find in a real MRE). Sometimes they use the term "side dish" is a little broadly. It can mean a genuine side dish like Fried Rice or Beans, or it could be a Toaster Pastry. XMRE is the only company I know of that gives you a Hot Beverage Bag. Seems like a small thing, but depending on how you're planning on using your MREs it can be a very important component! Another nice touch that XMRE has it that they actually have some of their own branded snacks in them. They're the kinds of things you'd find in genuine MREs, but have been packaged specifically for XMRE. And XMRE also offers a wide range of product lines to meet many different needs. It can be a bit confusing, but it's nice that they can offer so many variations on calories and content. Meal Kit Supply really only has their three-course standard MRE and a lighter two-course one.

Hash Browns? I can't imagine it'll have the right crispiness, can it?
@gschultz99 жыл бұрын
+ShowToddSomeLove It would seem that there are a number of different styles of "hash browns" out there. This is a variant that doesn't seem to be exactly what most people are thinking of when they hear the term "hash browns". Call me crazy, but I've been getting the feeling that the MREs produced for civilian consumption seem to be of high quality. I can't quite put my finger on why. This pack doesn't really seem like a military ration.
@kevinmoore29299 жыл бұрын
this doesn't say higher quality to me. I'd be very interested to find out what is up with that beverage base powder. maybe it's just me growing up in the south where hash browns are fried and have sliced onions instead of minced ones. this is another one that could have used some hot sauce just for some kick and not to cover the taste. nice that there are three drinks here, Natick could take notice of this for its breakfast menus.

Nice video. Looked at the website and unfortunately, they do not ship to Australia. Such a shame, as I liked the new look of them,. I will be going to an Army Navy supply store here in Perth to see if they have anything like the MRE's. It would be interesting to taste.

+Paul Lunn That's a shame that they do not ship to Australia Paul. You might want to check out XMRE (xmremeals.com) as I believe they do ship internationally (wouldn't swear to it or anything). It might be VERY expensive to do so, but at least there's the option.
@lunney0079 жыл бұрын
Yes they do but unfortunately for a case of 6 they are $68.99 and the shipping is $85.89, giving a total of $154.88 USD. With the conversion rate of around $0.70 a dollar, that is around 250+. Shame really, but that is okay. I will keep watching your great reviews.

Ameriqual is the one that packages them in that extra clear layer of packaging. Sopacko is the largest of the companies though, as far as military rations go. I was actually told by someone who works at the company several times that the reason my orders from them take so long is that they are working 24/7 on large volumes of military meals. Most of the Canadian IMP Entrees are actually made by Wornick for the Canadian government.

can you keep the flameless ration heater to use again if you dry out the heating pack? is that possible?
@gschultz98 жыл бұрын
I don't believe so--though I've never tried it. It's designed to be a one-use item that uses up all its energy. I suppose that, if you could stop the process by drying it it's possible to "save" some of that energy for a second use. Seems like it would be a big hassle for not much performance the second time around though.
@jackhenderson10398 жыл бұрын
No but that's not really necessary. Almost if not all modern MREs have the heater I them. And you can buy them separately anyway.
@ThisFish8889 жыл бұрын
I like your reviews, we see the standard MRE reviews on lots of the other channels, it would be cool if you mixed it up a little and eat them not quite like they were intended, like make a peanut butter and cocoa paste sandwich, maybe use the fruit drink and a little water to make "jelly", or add coffee powder to a vanilla dairyshake, like eating the same mre's everyday and you have to come up with interesting ways to eat them. I think it would benefit your reviews immensely.

Do MRE's give you the runs?
@gschultz99 жыл бұрын
+Dillon Flatt The legend of MREs includes many stories of people getting the runs from them. At the same time, a lot of people claim to get totally stopped up by them. I haven't had many problems because I try not to eat too many of them in a short period of time. The nutritional makeup of MREs is indeed unlike most "normal" foods and eating a steady diet of them can definitely mess up a person's guts for a bit. Which way it gets messed up is always a surprise!

It's actually a case of editing out as much of the chewing noises as possible--both so you don't have to hear the sound of me eating and to attempt to make the videos as short as possible. sometime you should try to use a mre but not use anything at all except the mre materials so you can test how good they are

+Gameplay All Day If you're saying I should just use what's in the MRE and not add any water or anything, check out my "Just How 'Ready-to-Eat' is an MRE?" in my "MRE Basics" series. That's pretty much what I did in that one.

I might not use all those drinks in one meal if I were out in the field. I'd probably ration them for other meals. Also that meal had a lot of carbs.

I was in the army so I want you to try this, take your instant cocoa, your instant coffee, and the peanut butter add a little bit of water mixing together like a pudding and it's called Ranger pudding it is so good try it!

This is probably one of the top 10 MRE meals I have seen, minus the coffee for me, I don't drink that stuff. :)

People quit complaining about how unappetizing it looks, they are meant to keep you a live, not to please you.
