Күн бұрын

A BIG thank you goes out to Ted and Jonathan (sk8r28) for sending this along to me. This is my first ever Canadian IMP ration (Individual Meal Pack). I've been wanting to try one of these for a long time, but never they seem to be kind of hard to find. This one is Menu No.9, Smoked Meat with Demi-Glace Sauce, and the entree was absolutely delicious! The name of the entree doesn't make it sound all that appetizing, but the "smoked meat" is actually beef brisket. It's a very salty dish, but in a good way-very flavorful.
I do have to say that I made one huge mistake with this video. For whatever reason (memory card space issues, battery running out in the middle of filming, being distracted by the wonderful flavor of the meat...) I managed to NOT film the part where I first tried the entree. Probably the most important part of the review. I feel very bad about missing that part, but there was still so much to share about the IMP (along with the fact that I don't know when/if I'll be able to get another one) that I still had to post the rest of the video. Hopefully it won't prove to be a total waste of a half-hour of your life. Sorry.

Just a pro Tip from a Canadian that has eaten many of these in the past and will in the future, throw the bread package in with the meal when you heat it, boiling the bread package steams and softens the bread. Kind of "freshens" the bread.

It's been many years since I ate IMP's but a few pointers.. In the Tanks we'd put our IMP Entrees in an Old Ammo can tied to one of the Tow cables over the exhaust louvers 30 mins prior to a Meal, the crews Entree boxes where saved and Cut/opened along the side and the Hot pack was also opened along the edge. that allowed you to eat without digging deep into the bag and getting food all over your hand and the box gave you a hand saver from the hot pouch. The bread is eaten as a hunk, with the PB (was in a tube like toothpaste when I was in) applied to the bites, or with the Mustard. The Jam was saved for a snack like when on night watch or sitting in a turret down position. In My Regiment, it was customary to see how long your "Battle spoon" would survive as it was kept on your person in your Jacket's pen holder during the exercise and used for every meal until it broke.

My father was in the Canadian Military growing up and he used to bring IMPs home after exercise for me to eat. I had totally forgotten about the pb in the mini toothpaste tube. So funny. I loved those packs, even now as a 30yo woman I really enjoy compartmentalized food, like bento boxes. I'd be so stoked to have an IMP again.

That bread hasn't changed in 20 years. And 20 years ago, it tasted like it had already sat on the shelf for 20 ;) The peanut butter used to come in a squeeze tube (like toothpaste), but the rest is pretty much how I remember it although instead of a beverage bag, the juice used to come sized for a standard canteen.

Thanks for sharing this, gschultz. I've haven't seen a Canadian MRE myself, so it was nice to watch the video. All that beef juice could really help to reconstitute the rest of the potatoes. I also thought a double pack of mustard was an interesting choice. Must be a Canadian thing. I'm surprised they didn't send along a little bottle of maple syrup... Ha ha.

we eat a lot of mustard in canada, but we actually don't eat that much syrup. I mean as a whole as a country, yeah, but you wouldn't put maple on any of those foods. maple is for pancakes and candies.

Another brilliant video. Really interested to see that the entree and apples were made by Baxters. Baxters are a Scottish company that have been making what you might call high end canned soups, pickles and preserves since 1868. They have a strong presence in Canada and Australia - a combination of old commonwealth ties and the number of Scots who emigrated there.

Hi! From a Canadian over here! If you ever try this dish again, try putting the mustard on the bread and the meat from the package to make a traditional smoked meat sandwich (well sorta, its actually wry bread but we take what we can get!) And then still use the juices to flavour of your mashed taters! :) yum! Great video!

Wow... they've updated the IMPs since I last ate them. Back in the early-mid 90s, the peanut butter and jam (there was also an option for honey) came in a metal tube that looked more like an epoxy tube than anything else. They came with crackers, but those were never very tasty, even with the PB&J. Meat entrees were generally flaked and formed meat, bland but edible. BTW: that smoked meat is probably a Montreal type. One of the most popular ways to do a smoked beef brisket up here.
@stevestruthers6180

I spent time in a army reserve unit in the very early 1980s and the peanut butter, honey, butter and jam in our ration packs also came in metal tubes. Agreed on the crackers, they were quite bland and dry. Most of the main meals were essentially civilian tinned foods like Puritan Meatballs and Gravy and stuff like Maple Leaf Viennese Sausage (the sausages were universally reviled and traded off). My favourite tinned food, though, was the bacon. It was great when eaten cold.

After watching the entire review i would like to add. I will be 57 years old in May. Am I too old to enlist in the Canadian Military? Wow this meal looked great! Much better than the MCI ( C-Rats ) meals we had when I was in US Army stationed in West Germany in 70s and 80s.

+rem palm - Nescafe and Nestea are both brands owned by the *company* Nestle. So slow down on the CAPS there buddy. Besides, Nescafe actually has a ton of different hot drinks including vanilla, chocolate, mocha, (and as in the video) caramel flavoured. So thinking it might be hot chocolate isn't that big a stretch, especially when the plastic beverage bag specifically mentions; "hot chocolate".

You may have figured this out by now but for any ration with instant mash, use the beverage bag, inverted frh bag or outer bag and use twice the water recommended. Soupy mashed potatoes are better than under mixed or excessively thick ones. even if you could drink it.

IMPs are probably no less rare up here in Canada than they are down there, I've certainly never seen one for sale anywhere, although we don't tend to have army surpluss tores like they do down south. The traditional way to eat smoked meat (at least here in Montreal, the source of smoked meat in Canada) is sliced, on rye bread, often stacked high, with plain yellow mustard. A picture: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Schwartz_smoked_meat_montreal.JPG Coincidentally, if you're ever in Montreal, Schwartz is considered *the* place for smoked meat, although Bens used to be in the running before it went out of business just shy of its 100th birthday.

Canadian French and Parisian French, the latter being the one we are taught here in school, if we take /took French, bear little resemblance to each other. When the Canadians don't have a certain word for something they will use the Parisian French equivalent. My grandmother was French Canadian and spoke Canadian French I am fluent in Parisian French and we basically couldn't understand each other if we used our French. Being in Maine I have driven to Canada many times, still do and have not been able to understand most of the people I encounter no I can understand me and finding common words can be difficult at best. Just a small nugget of information.

Actually, I do just that. It's not at all a bad thing. I wake up many times throughout the night and it helps ease me back to sleep. It does make me hungry though. G.Shultz, I really enjoyed this video. Thank you.

Date code on the outside is 13 (where it says "IMP 13 IRC") denoting that it was packed in 2013 If you want something more specific, you need to look inside.

The IMPs look way more appetizing on the tray than most of the MREs! Also, It seems like the IMPs have a little bit more food. Im not trying to say that the MREs are bad! Just that I would prefer a IMP

gschultz9 Thank you for replying! I said this on someone elses video and they said that I am being rude about the MREs! It is my opinion, so if others don't like my statement, they should not reply!

man i spent a few weeks in the field and this was my favorite meal for dinner . but yes, after a while the bread plugs you up better then shoving a foot of mud in the barrel of your weapon. also the drink bag is the best waterproof phone case .

The extra gravy was a nice addition to the those mashed potatoes, although there wasn't enough bread. Having a pb&j with a roast beef and potatoes is kinda odd but that's ration eating it seldom makes sense.

They put "May Contain" on packages here in Canada because the product is manufactured in an enviroment that also contains those ingredients. So if someone is allergic or doesn't want gluten in their food, then they will know that those ingredients 'may' have been mixed in with the food by cross contamination. Peanut butter is a big one Here, as so many people are allergic to it. We can't send our kids to school with products that contain or MAY contain peanuts! That's why you see products here with the crossed out peanut symbol on some packages. It lets us parents know that we can send that product to school in our kids lunch.

Is there a reason why they always use code for the dates? Wouldn't be easier for everybody if they write something like 23-oct-14 ?

the world may never know! i think its the millitarys secret stratagy to confuse people. i mean have you ever looked at a millitary manual! page 1-100? fuck no! they do page 1-2 then letter code (which repeats with a minute diffrence somewhere else in the manual) why? we just dont know!

Good presentation,it seems like there is a larger portion in Canada than the U.S. MRE.If you don't mind could you weigh total meals in the future for comparison?

Don't a lot of Canadian servicemen use MRE's as well? That's what I understood is they just integrate many times into the US supply chain abroad so probably the IMP is more rare?
