Thanks for doing these meal-by-meal reviews. I'm purchasing MREs for our family's emergency supplies and my 10-year-old is a somewhat picky eater. To "gundog" must now be an official term in the ration lexicon. And deservedly so! BTW, cocoa powder also makes a great icing. Adding coffee powder makes it the "high-test" version.
@gschultz98 жыл бұрын
Gundog has become an integral part of the ration world! I've heard of using cocoa powder to make the icing as well (though have never actually tried it myself), but the dairyshake powder seems like it's practically MADE for this!

The salt is in the water packet because the salt acts as a catalyst (speeds up a chemical reaction) for the reaction between the iron and magnesium in the heating elements. The iron and magnesium will react with each... slowly... when they are both dry powders. Add in some salt and they will react a little faster...when they are both dry powders. Add in some water (into the salt, iron, magnesium dry powder mix) and the reaction occurs rapidly and you have an FRH. By keeping the salt out of the iron-magnesium mix until the last possible moment, the (almost) full chemical potential of the iron/magnesium reaction is saved until needed... my theory... which may be why the FRHs with the separate salt water packet react even when they are older than the FRHs that just need plain water added. The salt being in the reaction explains why throwing some salt into a FRH may make it cook off if it is a little stale/old... you've added more catalyst into the reaction.

They definitely can be very monotonous with the components. I believe that's a very common complaint about these from people who buy cases, only to find the same thing over and over again in their meals. That's interesting that they gave you these while working football and baseball games. I'd have figured they'd give you hot dogs and burgers or other stuff from the snack bar.

is their a possibility that a non military mre could go bad after 6 years but it's stored in normal conditions?
@BigDrewski10008 жыл бұрын
Oh definitely! Part of the reason for the thicker out packing in military MRE's (aside from durability) is keeping out light and some excess heat. Civilian MRE's sadly don't have that in most cases. I've found an awesome alternative is to just pop the fully packaged MRE in the freezer and keep it there until you wanna use it.

If you want to buy mre's, go online. I don't know any specific websites but you can find them for around 5 bucks a pop. If you have a reletive in the police force or military they should have some. Any military surplus store should have some, good luck and good eating!

hey I have a totm of minestrone stew and I couldn't find any information on it do you know any thing about it
@gschultz98 жыл бұрын
That's kind of interesting. It's hard to find exact menu listings for TOTMs (I think someone listed a link to them at MREInfo.com somewhere), so they all seem kind of random. But it's strange because I don't believe that Minestrone Soup was ever an entree--only a side dish. If that's correct (and I wouldn't swear to it) it seems strange that they're put a side dish in for the main dish of a TOTM. Then again, Hash Browns with Bacon used to be a side dish and recently became a main, so maybe that happened with Minestrone too? Who knows?

Where does one get mres. I have a few close army surplus stores near and i couldnt find it in the one i go to. Do i just need to look in the other stores or is there another place i can get them. I like the official mre the commercial ones just arent right to me after being so accustomed to the militaries.
@BigDrewski10008 жыл бұрын
I would check Amazon. Another website you can try is MREMarketplace.com I believe it's called, the not 100% sure on that website name. Check Steve1989's channel as he gives the link in each of his videos.

I'd check the other stores if they're not too far away. Surplus stores frequently (but not always) have MREs. And some might not have them all the time. It's the kind of thing they might be able to get their hands on all the time. If you can't find them there I've always found eBay to be the best source for genuine MREs. Just be careful that you get what you are expecting. Make sure the seller is reputable (check feedback) and make sure they are selling genuine MREs and that they are relatively fresh.
