All that mouthing, dogs is pretending to have a tough time getting a grip but we all know she is just having a little fun with a couple extra bites mmmm pheasant... mine do it all the time “Dude this is a big one [chomp chomp] lemme just get a better grip [chomp] hmm maybe if I go from the other side [nibble nibble] ok here you go [one last chomp] you’re welcome”

So I'm from Wisconsin also. I bird hunt with my lab. Your pup reminds me of my first year with my dog. Yours is doing better on the retrieves. It took my dog two seasons to bring them to my hand. She always would stand over the dead bird. I think she got spurred on one of her first retrieves and that scared a bit from picking them up. Anyway great job on the Wisconsin public land. We work extremely hard to get a bird here in Wisconsin. !

Thanks for sharing! Most of these birds are in regularly planted areas but we have a great time none the less. Her natural retrieve made training it pretty easy and quick. Getting her steady on the otherhand... that's been our chore.

I to am from Wisconsin (Sauk County) and I hunt with my almost 2yo Chocolate Lab/Dobie mix, (I know odd combo but she hunts like her blood lines go back 10 generations). The birds we are hunting are 100%planted by the dnr! But man I love hunting my dog!

Now even though Wisconsin stocks birds. Do they seem to act more wild as the season progresses? Or can you honestly tell. I mean in my eyes. A bird is a bird regardless if they are released or not. Still an adventure!

Only a pen raised rooster would sit there like that first one did.....LOL..... but that dog is doing better than most of these supposed "hunting" dog videos on youtube.....Little more tweeking with training, and some time experience, and that is a brag dog you got there. :)

She was definitely rough on a few of them when they were peppered. We have been working on softening her mouth a bit this off-season. We'll see how she handles the adrenaline a good hunt can bring!

Great point! I'd have to watch the video again but I'm sure it was either me being young and dumb (the latter hasn't changed), or I was rewarding her establishing point with positive reinforcement. This was her first hunting season and steadiness has been a challenge with her.
