Lived in Cali for 20 years, and the main reason Lane-splitting is allowed actually isn't stupid. It is so bikes can go to the front at an intersection so they don't get rear ended and killed during a red light, but they wrote it so you can lane split everywhere for basically the same reason. There is however a law saying how fast you can go compared to traffic. EDIT: Hanky Bannist8r- no more than over 25mph over pace of traffic

I currently have been riding for 32 years and have lived in California for 41 years. A motor officer explained to me it's legal up to 25 mph in traffic in town or on the hwy and urged me to split lanes up to a traffic signal. God forbid a distracted driver rear end a bike waiting for a traffic light to turn green.

However from what I hear it's to ease the traffic flow in L.A. and other places in Cali. I guess it makes sense there. I don't believe it would work in most cities with how used people are to NOT having it. Then again that's what they said with roundabouts as well and it's working just fine. To each their own.

Hey Jeff, for sure read up on lane splitting it's actually very safe if done right, I wish it was legal in my state. studies have been done on states with similar demographics as L.A and like FL. & TX. and 30% lees bike crashes happen in L.A. so yeah doing 120 down the road splitting cars is a good way to die. doing it at low speeds to avoid hazards makes it so much safer for everyone. love the vids bro keep up the awesome work!!!!!!!!

So the lane splitting thing is complicated I'm not originally from California so I've had to educate myself on it as from where I grew up it is illegal so the lane splitting law started from when bikes were still air cool due to the traffic in California they made a law so motorcycles or any form of motorized 2 wheels can keep moving when there is traffic or that's where lane splitting originated from As far as the actual law it says that lane splitting is only to be allowed when traffic is slow under a certain speed I think around 30 miles an hour and you are only allowed to go in between cars there is no passing on the right in the right lane and there is no passing on the left in the shoulder also you are not allowed to cross solid white or double yellow or solid yellow lines

Jeff (irl) I lane split is when in traffic I've seen so many people driving cars and not see the traffic (at lights ect) has stopped and for me I feel it's safer to put a few cars inbetween me and the end off traffic, that's the only time I lane split if I have to over take I'll wait until I can cross onto the other side of the road.
