Well, that's something that makes a jumpscare scary, knowing that it's going to come, but sometimes not knowing when! Well... A liminal space is a space that's not a destination itself, but rather a transition between specific destinations... Everyone here already knew that, but I think the reminder can inform our definition of liminal animatronic; So that would be an animatronic with no defined complete state. Perhaps a twisting mesh of overlapping mechanisms, as function after function are added... I feel like that could be used as a mechanical alternative to a game about venturing deeper into the flesh of some cosmic horror... Like, started building a mansion, and then automating every single part of it, to the point of insanity. Needing more room, they started building sub-basements under their property, and filling them with endless rooms and hallways, which are themselves automated down to the carpet cleaning. The rooms move around too, because the walls, ceiling, and floor, need to have some function, and it's it just more convenient if the rooms you want line up in the way you want, every time? At a certain point, the overlapping technology could start to warp the fabric of space around it, allowing for infinite sub-levels.
